Daniel pulled the luggage behind me as I walked to the car. The door was already open, so I stepped inside while Daniel walked around the car, opened the trunk, and placed the suitcase inside. He sat behind the steering wheel, and once the engine roared to life, the car drove onto the highway

Did you recheck the itinerary?I asked Daniel as I scrolled through the phone

Yes. Mia and I made sure everything was in order. He replied swiftly, and I nodded. Looking at the itinerary, everything truly was in order

After the press conference we held three days ago, Lydia suggested we go on a family vacation. Everything was back to the way it was; she had filed an action against Mom, and we were having a good time

It felt as though a weight had been lifted from my chest. This vacation with the twins was a reminder that I had a normal family now. Gloria and Zoe will join us, but not on the first day

The car came to a stop in front of a big black gate, which slid open after a few seconds, and our car drove in

Lydia and the twins were already outside, and three suitcases were being arranged into the car. Once I got out. of my car, Liam and Melanie ran towards me, hugging me

Lydia smiled and walked over. Daddy! They chorused. The words rolled off their lips easily, and it sounded like music to my ear. I picked them up, holding them in both arms; they were getting bigger and bigger by the day

And how are my darlings doing?I asked

Good!”

Super happy.”

They answered at the same time. I walked to the car. As per the arrangement, Lydia and I will drive in her car with the twins, while Mia and Daniel will drive my car so Mia can bring Lydia’s car back from the airport

The resort we’d be staying at was in another city, and it was owned by Lydia. It was commissioned barely three weeks ago

You came right in time,” Lydia said

I didn’t want us to be late.” I lowered the kids to the ground, and they ran to the car

You look beautiful,” I said, as I pulled her into a hug. She wore an Aline dress with a slit at the side

She twisted her lips to the side, You tell me that all the time, so I’ve decided, she brought out a palm, I’ll get one flower each time you call me beautiful, she said with a laugh rustling from her throat

Then you’ll have a garden in no time,” I said in a serious tone

We settled in the car. I’m behind the steering wheel, Lydia in the front passenger seat, and the twins in the back

Dad, Mom said there’s a surprise and she doesn’t want to reveal it.Melanie suddenly said, poking her head

between our seats

Seat property and your seat belt, oh my goodness, Melanie,Lydia exclaimed. Fortunately, we were at the red light, so the car came to a stop, and Lydia turned to Melanie and fixed her seatbelt

Mom can’t tell us because it’s a surprise,Liam said

I can’t wait,” Melanie whined, and Lydia sat back down. Come on, Dad, tell me what the surprise is?”

No, don’t tell us, I don’t want spoilers, it won’t be fun anymore if he tells us,Liam stated, and they went into another episode of banter

There were times like this when their contradiction led to longer episodes, each wanted their point to be heard over the other. I had learnt the wrong way to stay off such banter

Once the car stopped in front of the vehicle, we alighted. Mia and Daniel came down too and helped us bring down the suitcases. The airport was busy, and Lydia grabbed hold of the twins for fear that they might go missing if she let them go

All through the flight, Liam and Melanie slept. It was a private airline reserved for just us, so we had the space

to ourselves

You didn’t tell me we’d be using your airline,” Lydia said. She was seated beside me, leaning her body onto mine. She raised her head and held my gaze briefly. Was that why you said Mia shouldn’t worry about it?”

Her warmth engulfed me, and my hands found their way to her waist. I smiled, knowing that she was pleased with my surprise, which made my heart warm. It’s a surprise, you don’t tell, or it will be no fun,I said, mimicking Liam’s voice

You like it?I asked, and she nodded, resting her head back on my chest. Like? She asked in disbelief. I loved this. I love the fact that we’re going on a vacation. You made time despite a busy schedule.” She said, her voice was low, choked with emotion

The thought that this was something she did by herself in the past made my heart sink. If only I were present from the start, then this would have been normal. Now it feels like we are a normal family. She said

I smoothed her hair. This is how our day would be from now on. We’d always make time to go on vacations and do whatever we want. No matter how busy we are, I’m sure we can cut back on our work just like we’re doing, I’ll gladly do that for you and the twins.I said, and she nodded

Taking time off for vacation was not an easy feat, especially noweverything was settled, and we were back to working the way we used to

When we got out of the airport, two men were waiting for us. A driver and an assistant

We were led to an SUV pulled over in front of the airport. Liam and Melanie pressed their hand against the windshield throughout the drive, marvelled at the sight

The car drove through a bridge, and soon we got to the hotel where we’d be staying for the next three days. The resort was surrounded by water

Holy fucks, Lydia, this is splendid.I was completely blown away by the hotel. Sure, I had seen it in pictures, on social media, it was everywhere. The newest resort was opened by Lydia. What I never expected was for the hotel to be this magnificent

A 40story building painted light brown

There was a water fountain at the side. Other cars pulled up, and people stepped out. Although it was more than a month since it was opened, it had climbed up to sixth place

At the entrance, three men wearing security uniforms stood with a grim look on their faces

Once we began walking towards the building, I was glad I wasn’t the only one who was blown away, as Liam and Melanie had the same reaction

Mom, is this where we’d be staying?”

Liam asked, and before Lydia could answer, Melanie tugged at Lydia’s hand, pulling her forward, It’s so beautiful, let’s go in.We left our luggage in the car, knowing it would be brought for us

Once we got to the lobby, three men and two women dressed in expensive tailor suits stood in a straight line, Lydia paused in front of them, and they bowed slightly as a sign of respect

The man standing in the middle, whom I presumed was the manager, stepped forward, Welcome, Miss Brooks. I’m Mark, the managing director. We didn’t know in time that you were coming. I’d have picked you personally.” His voice shook slightly as he spoke

Lydia shifted her weight from one foot to the other, clearly uncomfortable with the exchange

We have prepared a small gat-Lydia interrupted

No need,” she said. People bristled around, and we were already gaining unwanted attention

I’d like some alone time without disruption with my family, and also, I wouldn’t want to make the guest uncomfortable. Go about your day and duties like you normally do.She was asking them to ignore her so we could have a great time

The men and women looked amongst themselves, confused. Normally, this was a sight that should be announced and taken advantage of to gain more exposure for the resort. Thank you for welcoming me. This is enough already,Lydia said with a polite smile

Mark nodded, Alright. But allow me to show you to your room. We got the suite you asked for,he said, walking ahead of us. He led us to the elevator

The elevator glided downwards, and Melanie, who hadn’t expected it, flinched. It startled the twins, but Lydia and I quickly held them. Once they saw the reassuring look we gave them, they relaxed

The elevator dinged, and we stepped out. We were led through a hallway and then up some stairs. Once we got to the bottom of the steps, we were ushered into a living room big enough to contain fifty people at the same time

A challenger with diamond stones hung on the ceiling. It was a black themed room

Once he was done showing us the suite, he bowed again and said, If you need anything, do not hesitate to call me.He stated in a professional tone, Welcome to L&M resort, and I hope you enjoy your time with your family.”

After the man left, the twins held hands and rushed into the first room on the right

Once we were alone, I pulled Lydia towards me, crashing her against my chest. A sense of pride enveloped me. This woman owned the place. I am so proud of you,I confessed

Her hand snaked around me, and she tightened the hug; our hearts beat in sync

Your words mean a lo-”

A loud scream cut through her words, and my head jerked to the direction of the room at the sound of Melanie’s voice. We pulled away from each other in a heartbeat and rushed to the room, holding our hearts in our hands

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
