Chapter 9

Dominic Faulkner glanced at her through the rearview mirror, a faint, almost imperceptible smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

“Already smiling? Does the divorce suit you that well?” he teased quietly.

It was then that Nora finally found the courage to ask the questions swirling in her mind. “Who are you? Why did you take me away?”

She studied his reflection in the front mirror, taking in his sharp eyebrows, the defined planes of his face, and the thin line of his lips pressed firmly together. Even in silence, his presence carried a quiet authority, like the ominous calm before a storm ready to break.

Yet, strangely enough, she didn’t feel any threat from him.

A soft chuckle escaped Dominic’s lips. “You don’t even know who I am, and yet you got into my car without hesitation?”

Nora nodded firmly. “You saved me. That’s enough reason for me to trust you.”

His brow twitched slightly, but he remained silent.

Meanwhile, high above the city in a revolving rooftop restaurant, Chase sat across from Camila, enjoying dinner. But suddenly, an overwhelming wave of dread crashed over him, as if something invaluable had just slipped through his grasp.

With every passing second, the gnawing unease intensified until, unable to bear it, he pushed his chair back with a loud bang, sending it crashing to the floor as he rose abruptly.

“I need to check on something. Wait here—I’ll be back soon,” he said hurriedly.

“But you promised you’d take me to the amusement park tonight…” Camila protested softly.

Chase was already gone, disappearing into the night.

Camila bit her lip, forcing herself to stay put, just as he had instructed.

Chase raced back to the Whitmore estate, his heart pounding in his chest. As he opened the door, the oppressive silence hit him like a physical blow.

Darkness. Stillness. An eerie emptiness.

He hurried to the bedroom, dread tightening its grip around his throat.

The bed was empty.

The closet stood bare.

Every trace of Nora had vanished, as if she had never lived there at all.

Panic surged through him, raw and suffocating.

His fingers trembled as he scrambled for his phone, dialing her number over and over.

All he heard was the cold, unyielding beep… beep…

Nora had never ignored his calls—not once.

He redialed again and again, desperation mounting with each failed attempt.

Now, the calls didn’t even connect.

Her phone was switched off.

His hands shook uncontrollably, his mind struggling to process the nightmare unfolding before him.

He was unraveling, losing control piece by piece.

Frantically, he called his security team.

“Find her. I want a full report on her whereabouts. When was the last time she was seen at the estate?”

The guard’s voice trembled as he replied, “Mr. Whitmore, if I may… wasn’t it under your orders? The last time she was here, she was taken by those men…”

He dared not utter the word rape.

Chase’s heart plummeted.

“Pull the surveillance footage. The cold storage camera—bring it up now. I want to see everything.”

As soon as he ended the call, his legs gave out beneath him, and he collapsed to the floor, drained of all strength.

Something deep within him felt hollowed out.

Like a piece of his soul had been ripped away.

His heart still beat, but each thud was a fresh stab of agony.

The footage flickered to life on the screen.

A woman’s desperate cries echoed through the silent villa, wrenching and raw.

“Stay away—please—don’t touch me!”

“My husband is Chase Whitmore! If he finds out, he’ll kill you—!”

Even in that harrowing moment, she clung to his name, a fragile thread of hope that he would come for her.

Tears streamed down Chase’s face.

She must have truly believed he would.

But where was he?

Kissing Camila atop a goddamn Ferris wheel.

He shut his eyes tightly, the pain unbearable.

Was that the moment her heart shattered?

The final blow that made her walk away?

Had she already stopped loving him?

“Sir,” a technician’s voice interrupted, “there’s evidence of tampering in the video. Look here—there’s a clear frame skip. Mrs. Whitmore is lifted into the air, as if being carried, but no one appears.”

Chase’s expression darkened.

Rewinding and fast-forwarding the footage confirmed it.

She had been taken, but the person carrying her was invisible.

He sprang to his feet, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white as bone.

Who had the audacity to break into the Whitmore estate and abduct his wife?

“Restore the original video. I want every single frame recovered.”

“And mobilize every branch of the Whitmore Group. Use all available resources. I want her found—now.”

“Whoever locates her first—fifty million, no questions asked.”
