The sound of the lock turning echoed softly.

The door creaked open, and a familiar voice drifted into the room. “Ryker, sweetheart, I made some chicken soup for you both today—eat it while it’s still warm—”

Margaret stepped inside, carrying a thermos in her hands. She glanced up and suddenly froze.

Her gaze fell on the two of us standing there, the air between us thick with unspoken tension.

Her smile faltered, stiff and forced. It was clear she hadn’t expected me to be here.

But she quickly masked her surprise. In less than a heartbeat, she plastered on a worried expression and hurried further into the room. “Oh! Mila, what are you doing home? I thought you’d be at your mother’s today?”

I moved closer and gently took the thermos from her hands, returning a sweet smile. “Mom, if I wasn’t here… then who exactly were you making this soup for?”

I emphasized the word “who,” letting it hang in the air.

Margaret stumbled over her words, unable to give a straight answer.

Ryker stepped in, trying to smooth over the awkward moment. “Babe, what are you talking about? Of course it’s for us! I told Mom a few days ago how hard you’ve been working lately—she felt bad and wanted to make something special for you.”

He shot his mother a pointed look as he spoke.

I chuckled bitterly inside. So Margaret knew about Layla. Of course she did.

The hypocrisy in this family ran deep, like a poison seeping through every interaction.

“Oh, how sweet. Thanks, Mom.” I sat down and began ladling soup into bowls for everyone.

At the table, Ryker was visibly restless, unable to keep still.

His phone kept lighting up beside his plate—WhatsApp notifications popping up one after another. Each time, he quickly locked the screen, but I caught glimpses of a familiar profile picture.

Margaret noticed too. Without missing a beat, she placed a piece of chicken on my plate. “Mila, eat more. You’ve been looking thinner lately.”

I smiled and thanked her, then casually added, “Oh, my mom went to visit relatives today. I’ll go over tomorrow instead and stay the night. I won’t be back until the day after.”

No sooner had I finished speaking than a voice message notification appeared on Ryker’s phone.

He snatched it up as if it were burning his fingers and jumped to his feet. “Uh—I have to take this. Work call.”

He dashed into the bedroom, phone pressed to his ear, and shut the door firmly behind him.

I watched him retreat like a frightened animal, sipping my soup slowly, trying to steady my nerves.

A few minutes later, he emerged, wearing an apologetic expression. “Babe, sorry, there’s an emergency meeting. I need to get back to the office quickly.”

Yeah, right. There was no meeting. His little date had fallen through, and Layla was probably fuming. He had to go smooth things over with her.

“Go ahead.” I stood and straightened his collar, my voice soft and silky. “Work comes first. Drive safely.”

The next day, I followed through with my plan and went to my mother’s house.

After ending my usual video call with Ryker—our daily “checking in” ritual—I felt an emptiness settle deep inside.

My mind wouldn’t stop racing.

Was Layla lying on that bed right now? The one I’d spent five thousand dollars on, custom-made for Ryker’s back? Were they tangled up on it at this very moment?

The thought of sleeping every night on that same bed—the one they’d shared—made bile rise painfully in my throat.

Everything I’d ever done for him, every kindness, every effort, had turned into a weapon he wielded against me.

That night, sleep eluded me completely.

Ryker, tomorrow? Your good days are over.
