Why?
“He’s gone, she said, closing the door firmly behind her. “Now it’s just us.”
“Thank you for everything, Selena,” I said, sensing a shift in the atmosphere.
She moved closer, her steps hesitant. “Rachel, there are important things I must tell you.”
Instinctively, I held my baby tighter against my chest.
“What is it, Selena?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
‘I hope you can forgive my role in what I’m about to reveal,” she began, wringing her hands. “If I had known you before becoming involved in all this, f would have…”
“Would have what?‘ I prompted when she trailed off.
“I would have refused his orders, she confessed. “But I trusted Carter; from what he told me, everything he did was for the benefit of the Eclipse pack I never expected you to be such a strong, kind person. I never thought I would come to like and respect the girl who was merely meant to be a breeder.
Breeder. The word hit me like a slap. “What you saying, Selena?”

She took a deep breath. “Carter has been deceiving you from the beginning, Rachel. He’s been secretly working with Dylan against Nathan and King lason. None of this was coincidence–your ‘suicide,‘ my ‘happening‘ to find you, the servant who was arranged to beat you… even all your arrangements here. He’s been using you and your child all along.”
Though shocked, I wasn’t entirely surprised. He had been using me all along.
I should have known this wasn’t simply sanctuary and protection. What Alpha would help a runaway breeder without expecting something in return?
“While I suspected Carter’s motives weren’t entirely altruistic,” I said aloud, “I at least thought he respected my rights as the child’s mother. But it seems my son and I are just political pawns to him.”
“Rachel, I understand your anger,” Selena said, her voice gentle. “But there’s something else–something more important–I must tell you.”
I closed my eyes briefly. “Selena, I’m not sure I can handle more revelations right now.”
“What comes next is good news, dear, I swear by the Moon Goddess,” she insisted. “This could be the hope and salvation for both you and your child.”
I sighed. “What is it, Selena?”
To my surprise, she reached beneath her collar and pulled out a pendant that had been hidden beneath her clothes.
Then, to my complete shock, she knelt beside my bed and bowed her head in the formal wolf submission posture.
“We’ve finally found you, Princess!” she exclaimed. “May the Moon Goddess bless you
and your
cub!*
“Selena, stop!” I pleaded, alarmed by her behavior. “What are you doing?”
She raised her head, eyes shimmering with emotion, and held up her pendant. On it was the image of a silver–haired woman.
“Does this face seem familiar to you?” she asked.
I studied it, feeling an odd tug of recognition. “She… reminds me of my mother, actually.”
Selena’s face lit up. “Dear Luna, you are descended from the ancient royal bloodline. There’s an entire pack in the North–my pack… our pack–waiting for your return. I lied before. I’m actually from Nexus, and my mission was to find our missing princess.”

My mind reeled. What are you talking about?”
“The hemorrhaging your experienced during birth—the conflict between your bloodlines should have been fatal, Helens explained but your ve miraculously. Only those with Nexus royal blood possess such ability.”
“My father was an Alpha,” I said weakly, trying to process what she was saying.
“Yes, but your mother carried something far more precious–the Nexus royal bloodline, Selena confirmed. “Listen to me, Rachel. You belong with de pack. You are our true Luna, and our people await you and this cub with dual royal lineage.”
1 stared down at my son, at those gray eyes so like Nathan’s, feeling overwhelmed by revelations that changed everything I thought I knew about maelf
“May I have some time alone?” I finally asked. “I need to be with my child and think about all this.”
“Of course, my Luna,” Selena replied. ‘Rest well. But please remember, you can no longer trust Carter.”
“I understand.”
“Rachel,” she added, pausing at the door, “I deeply regret my part in all this.”
‘Please… just go now,” I whispered.
As Selena quietly left, I gazed down at my son.
Turns out, I was never that pitiful, manipulated breeder, but the noble Nexus princess all along. A bitter smile crept across my lips as conflicting emotions swirled inside me.
