Chapter 199
Rachel’s POV
The sensation of being watched crawled up my spine like an icy finger. I shifted uncomfortably, cradling my sleeping son closer to my chest as I glanced around the small cabin.
The wooden walls that had seemed cozy just hours ago now felt like they were closing in on me.
Something was out there. I could feel it.
I moved carefully to the window, peering through the dusty glass into the gathering darkness.
The dense trees cast long shadows across the clearing, their branches swaying slightly in the evening breeze. Was that movement at the edge of the woods, or just my imagination?
The feeling had been growing stronger for the past half hour – a prickling awareness that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, the sensation vanished.
I exhaled slowly, trying to calm my racing heart. Maybe I was just being paranoid. After everything I’d been through, it wouldn’t be surprising.
A noise behind me made me whirl around, nearly crying out in alarm.
“Selena!” I gasped, clutching my son tighter. “My God! You freaked me out!”
Selena stood in the doorway between the cabin’s two small rooms, her expression apologetic. “I’m sorry, Rachel. I received
word you were here.”
I gestured toward the window. “I thought someone was watching us from outside. Did you see anyone when you approached?”
Selena shook her head, her long silver hair catching the fading light. “No one. The forest was quiet.”
“Maybe I’m just jumpy,” I admitted, gently rocking my son when he stirred.
“That’s understandable,” Selena said, moving further into the room. “But we should leave soon. It’s not safe to stay in one place too long.”
I nodded, though my body ached with exhaustion. The small bed in the corner looked so inviting – a real mattress after days of sleeping on the ground or in makeshift shelters.
All I wanted was to lie down and sleep for a few hours.
Before I could respond, a distant howl pierced the night, followed by several more my blood run cold.
“What was that?” I asked, moving away from the window.
angry, aggressive sounds that made
Selena’s expression grew serious. “It sounds like rogue werewolves being intercepted…”

Chapter 199
“Are we close to the Nexus territory?” I asked hopefully.
*About six hours on foot,” she estimated. “But if there are packs moving south, we might be hearing them.”
glanced down at my sleeping son, then back at Selena. “I don’t think we should travel at night. I can’t shift to wolf form, and if there are werewolves out there…”
Selena considered this, then nodded. “You’re right. We’ll rest here tonight and leave at first light.”
I woke to pale morning light filtering through the cabin windows.
After a fitful night’s sleep punctuated by distant howls and growls, I was eager to continue our journey. Selena seemed equally anxious to move on.
We headed north, following a narrow path through the dense forest.
After several hours of walking, we came upon signs of the previous night’s violence. Blood stained the grass and tree trunks, and tufts of wolf fur littered the ground along with other debris.
Occasionally, we passed a werewolf corpse, already beginning to decompose in the morning sun.
The smell made my stomach turn, and I had to breathe through my mouth to keep from gagging.
Blackened flesh peeled away from exposed bone, revealing glistening sinew underneath. Flies buzzed eagerly around gaping wounds, their bodies catching the light as they feasted.
“What happened here?” I whispered, horrified by the carnage.
“A battle,” Selena replied grimly. “Let’s keep moving.
By late afternoon, we reached the outskirts of a small village. I immediately sensed the tension in the air – villagers hurried about their business, glancing nervously over their shoulders, their faces drawn with worry.
“What’s going on here?” I asked Selena, shifting my son to my other arm.
“I’m not sure, but I suspect it has something to do with last night’s fighting.”
I frowned. “This far south?”
“Perhaps another conflict,” Selena suggested, quickening her pace. “People rushing usually means someone needs care.”
I followed her into the village center, where we found ourselves at the entrance of a large communal hall. Inside, the scene was grim.
Seven badly wounded warriors lay on makeshift canvas beds, their conditions clearly critical. About fourteen women moved among them, tending to their injuries with limited supplies.
I counted the wounded and noticed the nearly empty medicine shelves. Bandages were scarce, and the few remaining bottles of medicine looked insufficient for the severity of the injuries.
