Chapter 204
Nathan’s POV
The word ‘banished” hung in the ait like a death sentence.
I couldn’t believe my cousin had actually spoken it.
‘Banished?‘ I repeated, the word tasting like poison on my tongue, my voice shaking with disbelief.
A wave of anguish swept through me as I stared at him. How could he condemn me so coldly?
Jason’s face hardened, all traces of the cousin I’d known vanishing beneath the cold mask of the king.
“Guards, arrest him!” he commanded, his voice echoing through the throne hall.
The massive doors swung open as if on cue. Guards poured in, followed by a crowd of onlookers–some shocked, others confused, a few sympathetic, and more than I cared to count wearing expressions of malicious satisfaction.
I scanned the room frantically, searching for familiar faces from my pack. None were present. They’d been deliberately kept outside the throne hall–I was certain of it now,
My eyes locked with Jason’s. His gaze was wary, guarded. The royal guards had already formed a protective circle around him, as if I might attack at any
moment.
My cousin no longer trusts me, and I sure as hell don’t trust him.
I didn’t hesitate. As the first guards rushed toward me, I shifted.
The transformation was instant–bones cracking, muscles reforming, my body becoming the massive black wolf that had earned me respect and fear throughout the territories.
The guards faltered, several stumbling backward as I snarled, teeth bared.
I knocked two aside with a powerful swipe of my paw, clearing a path toward the exit.
Behind me, Jason had stepped forward, addressing the stunned crowd!
“Ladies and gentlemen!” he announced, voice carrying throughout the hall. “I must inform you that Alpha Nathan Blackwood is the true culprit behind this war. I know this will shock many of you, as he has long been viewed as a hero, but it was his brutal murder of his stepfather years ago that has driven King Dylan to attack our kingdom.”
The crowd fell silent. I paused my retreat, ears flattening against my head as I turned to witness this betrayal.
Sounds…
“Now, Jason continued, “King Dylan is willing to negotiate peace–if we surrender the true perpetrator, the one responsible for all our suffering. Let Nathan pay for his treacherous actions! Let his life be exchanged for the lives of innocents. He has deceived us all, pretending to stand with us while being the very source of all our pain and needless deaths!”
As the king concluded his speech, cheers erupted from parts of the crowd.
Others began shouting that I should be captured and given to Dylan to be executed. Because I refused to surrender, I was being banished from the kingdom.
I didn’t fear death, but at least I wanted to die for something worthwhile.
I quickened my pace, racing toward the building’s exterior. Emotions flooded my mind–betrayal, anger, and the crushing disappointment of it all tangled in my brain until I could barely breathe.
As I ran, I reached out through our mind link
Chapter 204
Tyler, I have to go. I’m leaving Emerald City.”
I worried about the pack members I was leaving behind. They might face persecution for their loyalty to me.
“What happened? Is the king handing you over to Dylan?” Tyler’s voice was urgent in my mind.
“He tried. I’m no longer Alpha. I’ve been banished. If you want to stay, I understand-
“Nathan, shut up. We’re all coming with you,” Tyler cut me off.
I couldn’t help the bitter smile that formed, even in wolf form. My friend, my loyal Beta… I was overwhelmed with gratitude.
“Thank you, bro. Gather what you can and meet me where I left most of our troops before we entered Emerald City.”
I had only the pack I’d carried on the battlefield–water, spare clothes, and the worn ultrasound picture Rachel had given me months ago.
The only photo of my child I possessed.
As I raced toward the tunnels I knew would allow me to escape Emerald City, my mind cleared. A unique opportunity presented itself.
King Dylan, the enemy we despise, the brother of the man I loathe, is nearby.
He’s the true source of all our people’s suffering. We all know why he’s come to the Eastern Territories, why he wants me now–because he’s losing the war!
