Carter’s POV
“The people hunting me are Dylan’s men,” I explained. “The western territories have lost the war. I’m of rio use to Dylan anymore, and I have nowhere else to go. I met her eyes. ‘When can I see Rachel?”
‘Hopefully never. The best thing you could do for her is to stay away. Selena stood up. “But it’s not t my place to decide if she forgives you or not?
With that, she turned and left the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts and regrets.
When the door opened again, Selena wasn’t alone. Following behind her was Rachel, and my heart nearly stopped at the sight of her.
She was even more beautiful than I remembered–her copper hair cascading down her back, her gentle eyes, her soft smile.
My angel.
My love.
“It’s good to see you again, Rachel!” I couldn’t keep the smile from spreading across my face.
Selena stood protectively beside Rachel, clearly not trusting me enough to leave us alone.
“Hey, you, Rachel said softly. “Looks like you got into some trouble. I’m glad you’re awake.”
I chuckled lightly. “I’m fine now. Thank you for saving me.” I paused, memories flooding back. “You know… I once saved you when you were in this state. And now you’ve saved me.”
Rachel was quiet for a moment before a small smile appeared on her face, though her words had a sharp edge. “The difference is, I’m not the one who got you beaten up in the first place.”
I hadn’t expected such directness from her, and it caught me off guard. “Rachel, I want to apologize for everything I did. Please let me stay and make it up to you.”
I studied her face, trying to read her expression.
Once, I could anticipate her every reaction, but now she was a mystery to me.
“Carter,” she said slowly, “whatever happened is in the past. I don’t think we need to see each other again. I’m glad you’re safe, but you can leave now.”
‘Rachel… My voice grew desperate. “I have nowhere to go. My uncle and his men want me dead.”
“We have no obligation to provide you with shelter, Carter!” Selena interjected. “We saved your life; we’re even! Your Majesty, it’s too dangerous to let him
stay!”
I looked directly at Rachel, ignoring Selena. “I have critical information I can trade for my stay. It concerns your safety, Your Majesty.”
I didn’t expect forgiveness to come easily. I needed time, and first, I needed to find a way to stay close to her.
Rachel hesitated. “Carter, whatever your motives were, I appreciate everything you did for me in the past. But I don’t know if I can trust you again…”
Selena looked nervous at the mention of information but reluctantly asked Rachel to let me finish.
“Your Majesty,” I said, keeping my eyes only on Rachel, ‘do we have a deal? Can I stay?”
‘Carter, you ask for my forgiveness, but I really don’t feel your sincerity right now. You haven’t changed at all,” Rachel said, turning to leave.
“Rachel, don’t go!” I called out, my voice dropping to a desperate plea.

Chapter 217
She showed little emotion, which terrified me more than if she’d been angry.
I’d rather have her hate me than treat me with this detached indifference, like a stranger. I felt that if she walked out now, I’d lose any chance of winning
her back.
“Okay, I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that… I shouldn’t have tried to manipulate you again! I’m sorry!”
I swallowed hard, my brow furrowing. “Please, give me five minutes, Rachel. 1 do care about you. Let me finish, and if you don’t want me to stay, I promise I
won’t!”
1 reached out to take her hand, but she moved it away before 1 could touch her. Still, she stopped walking and turned to face me, willing to listen.
I’m sure you already know that we, I mean the western territories, have lost the war,‘ I began. Rachel nodded.
‘Have you heard that Nathan was exiled and has disappeared?” When Rachel lowered her gaze and remained silent, I took it as confirmation.
“Because King Dylan was seeking revenge against your father, handing over Nathan would end the war, Rachel said. “What does this have to do with me?
“Yes and no. The real reason is that Luna Elizabeth is pregnant now, and she was able to conceive because of you!”
Rachel’s eyes widened. “My blood?”
“Exactly! So Rachel, sooner or later they’ll trace the source of your blood, and your identity will put you in danger! I know you don’t want to see me now, but please let me stay. I know some wanderers, I still have sources of information. I can help.”
I meant every word I said, perhaps for the first time in a long while.
Rachel was quiet for a moment, considering my words. “Thank you for telling me. Selena, please inform everyone that Carter is my guest and can stay here during his recovery.”
She continued walking toward the door.
“Rachel!” I called out before she could leave. “Do you hate me?”
She froze, her body tensing before she slowly exhaled and turned back. “Hate is a strong word, Carter. No, I don’t hate you.”
I gave her a bitter smile as she left.
Probably because she never loved me in the first place.
