Chapter 218
Nathan’s POV
I leaned against the rough bark of a pine tree, allowing my mind to drift back to the words
of Isla, the seer who had warned me months ago
“In a land of cedars where the queen has slept in ice for years, a great evil awaits you. Do not continue down the path you have chosen, Nathan Blackwood of Ironjaw. Or the earth will run red with blood, and you will see the world through eyes of the same color!”
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. The prophecy was coming true before my eyes–literally.
The battlefields we’d crossed had indeed run red with blood, the earth soaked with it. And my eyes….
I closed them tightly, trying to push away the nightmare that had jolted me from my restless slumber. In it, Rachel had been holding our child, her face glowing with love and tenderness.
But when she’d looked up and seen me, her expression had transformed into one of horror.
“Who are you?!” she’d screamed, clutching our baby protectively. “Stay away, you monster!”
‘I would never hurt you, Rachel!” I’d shouted back, my voice breaking. “I love you! Please come back to me!
My eyes snapped open, my breath coming in short gasps. I had to keep moving north. Rachel and my child were there–I could feel it.
Something about my child was calling to me, urging me forward with increasing urgency.
I glanced at my reflection in a small puddle nearby. My eyes, once a steely gray that had shifted to light purple and then to deep violet, were now taking on a reddish tint. Blood red.
The mark of a soul being consumed by darkness, according to the old legends.
I’m afraid that after my soul is consumed, I will harm the ones I love.
Rachel…
I knew Tyler and Victoria were concerned. I’d caught their worried glances, their whispered conversations.
But what choice did I have? Jason had banished me, making me a true wanderer–no home, no pack.
I didn’t regret my choices. But I worried what Rachel would think when she saw me like this. Would she see me as an enemy? A monster?
The thought of her recoiling from me, of our child never knowing me as a father rather than a beast, ate at me constantly.
Life had seemed so simple before. My biggest concerns had been producing an heir and avoiding marriage to Madison.
Now, after meeting Rachel, I’d learned that some things couldn’t be controlled. All I wanted was to be with the woman I loved and our child.
But when would this search end?
‘You okay?”
I turned to see Victoria settling onto the ground beside me, her face etched with concern.
1 grunted in response, not in the mood for conversation.
Victoria wasn’t deterred. “I can’t wait to see her again,” she said softly. “I can feel it, you know. She’s close.”
I’d been feeling it too–Rachel’s presence, and sometimes more strongly, my child’s. The sensation had been growing stronger as we moved north.

“Alpha, Victoria continued, “I know this is hard, but Tyler and I will help her see the truth. You went to Vortex Island for her, Carter is the one when b lying. Don’t worry.”
I nodded, grateful for her loyalty if nothing else.
Suddenly, there was a commotion in the camp. Victoria and I rose to our feet, alert and ready.
“Alpha, I’ve encountered a group of wanderers,” Joe’s voice came through the mind link.
“Do you need backup?” I responded immediately.
“No, Alpha. In fact, their leader wants to talk to you.” There was a pause. “About our operation here, sir.”
I considered for a moment. Even if they couldn’t be trusted, my group could handle a few strangers. “Bring them in.”
Minutes later, Joe appeared at the edge of camp, leading a ragged group of wanderers. Most were male, with a few females mixed in.
