Chapter 219
They appeared to be around my age or older, except for one who barely looked old enough to shift. The rest had the hardened lock of experienced fighters
Their leader was a short, stocky man–pure muscle. Ilis left eye was missing, leaving only a socket.
Victoria inhaled sharply beside me when she saw the leader, her body tensing slightly.
I met them at the edge of camp, not wanting to allow them too far in where they might gather information about my operation.
“You’re new around here,” the one–eyed man said, extending a dirty hand. “Everyone’s talking about you. Haven’t lost a battle since you arrived. Impressive.
I ignored the outstretched hand. “I’m not here to make friends. What do you want?‘
The man lowered his hand, unfazed. “They call me Single Eye.”
‘Why are you here?” I demanded.
“We’re here to join you, if you’ll have us,” Single Eye said bluntly.
My eyes narrowed. “Why?”
“Too many wanderer groups in this area, Single Eye explained. “Our previous leader was weak compared to you. We figure we don’t stand a chance against that fucking bitch, the Queen.”
“Queen?” I repeated, the words triggering my memory of the seer’s prophecy: where the queen has slept in ice for years. This was a new development, one i hadn’t anticipated.
Single Eye nodded. “She’s leading an army from the far north. They aren’t wanderers. They’re a pack that seemed to appear out of nowhere, but those fuckers can fight! Many groups tried to attack them and lost to those sons of bitches! If that bitch gets here, we might be driven out of the area. We need a new
leader.”
‘I’m not interested,” I said dismissively.
“Hear me out,” Single Eye persisted. “I don’t know what you’re here for, but it looks like you want your operation to stay in this area for a while. Sooner or later, you’ll have to deal with the rest of the wanderers and the Queen. But your group isn’t large. Not to mention there are some crazy motherfuckers
around now besides you.”
Single Eye gestured broadly. “Things in this area have been stable for years, but the Queen is changing everything, and not in our favor. We just want to be part of a wanderer force that has a chance of defeating her, or at least escaping her clutches.”
“Alpha, he makes sense,” Tyler’s voice came through the mind link.
I was wary of adding unknown men to my ranks. “How do I know I can trust you?”
“We’ll swear allegiance to you, of course,” Single Eye assured me. “We’re all experienced fighters. Even the kid in the back there. He jerked his thumb toward the youngest member. “We can guarantee we’ll remain loyal and fight alongside you.“.
Tyler stepped forward. “No offense,” he said, “but I’m not sure how much a wanderer’s promise means. Especially when you just betrayed your current leader.”
Single Eye shrugged. “Then split us up. If we’re assigned to different squads, it’ll be harder for us to organize aga group that can survive. That’s all.”

I observed the group. They looked exhausted, as if they’d been on the move for a long time. After a moment’s consideration, I nodded.
‘Fine,” I decided. “Victoria, take these new recruits and distribute them among the squads. I don’t want any two of them together.
I needed men for patrols, and if this Queen was going to be trouble, I needed to be prepared.

She immediately moved to carry out the order.
As the wanderers were led away, Tyler stepped closer to me. ‘Alpha, I’ll keep an eye on them.”
I turned to Joe. “Joe, go back to scouting. If you hear anything about this Queen, I want to know.”
“Yes, sir.”
I nodded, my eyes scanning the northern horizon. Somewhere out there, Rachel was waiting.
