Chapter 236
“Your Majesty,” he said with complete sincerity, “may the Moon Goddess guide your reign. May your lands be filled with joy and prosperity!” He pressed a kiss to the back of my hand.
My heart skipped a beat, but I quickly reminded myself that this man was the reason I couldn’t
return to my people.
I pulled my hand away and lowered my head. Nathan’s expression showed he might have been hurt by my reaction.
“Look, Rachel, I know it’s not much of a gift. I’m sorry if you don’t like it…” The smile had completely disappeared from his face.
“It’s a nice gesture, Nathan, thank you,” I said, hating myself for being unable to maintain a hard
stance with him.
He nodded. “You’re welcome.”
Silence fell over the tent again.
I placed the bouquet on the table beside me, then took a few bites of my lunch.
Although the food was delicious, I found myself slowing down because Nathan kept staring at me,
which made me feel uncomfortable.
“Nathan… well… you’re making me uncomfortable staring like that… are you hungry? Do you want
some?” I immediately regretted offering.
Nathan’s eyes brightened at my invitation, and he leaned forward.
“Yes… I’m hungry,” he whispered seductively in my ear.
I recoiled in shock, unable to believe what he was implying. “You… you… get away from me!” I
shouted.
How dare he? I fumed inwardly. After everything he did yesterday, he acts like nothing happened? Like I’m just his prisoner or sex slave?
I stood up and backed away from Nathan, terrified he might force me to do something I didn’t want
- to.
Nathan didn’t pursue me. He seemed amused by my reaction, then said, “I have something for the
baby too.”
He held up a leather cord with a few beads and a small wooden wolf pendant. “I made this for him.

I stayed where I was, wary of his intentions.
Nathan chuckled. “I won’t force you to do anything, at least not on your birthday. Come on.
After a moment’s hesitation, I reached out and took the wolf pendant, examining it. “It’s beautiful,” I admitted.
Nathan’s mood visibly improved at my compliment. He smiled as he bent down to fasten the leather cord around our baby’s tiny wrist.
“Thank you very much, Nathan,” I said, setting down the plate. “But I really think you should go
now.”
Nathan looked at me for a long moment. “I thought we could spend your birthday together.”
I retorted, “Seriously? You think I want to spend my birthday with you? Nathan, I’d rather be alone. I
haven’t forgotten why I’m here, or that you won’t let me leave.”
“I’m protecting you!” Nathan’s voice rose slightly, causing the baby to stir. I motioned for him to be
quiet.
Nathan crossed his arms over his chest, clearly annoyed.
“Nathan,” I whispered harshly, “you can tell yourself you’re protecting me all you want, but we both know that’s not true… you’re keeping me here because you don’t want me to leave… you want to see me now because of the mate bond. But at the end of the day, nothing has changed–except you’re somehow being more cruel and inconsiderate than before!”
“Inconsiderate?” Nathan asked, pain evident in his voice.
My son whimpered at his father’s tone, and I picked him up, cradling him against my chest.
“You don’t seriously think bringing me some flowers and some food makes everything that’s happened between us okay, do you?” I challenged.
“I thought you’d understand I’m trying to make amends!” Nathan shouted. The baby began to cry.
“Look what you’ve done now!” I hissed through clenched teeth. “Get out of here, Nathan‘
“Give me the child!” he demanded.
“No!” I shouted back. “He’s crying and I need to feed him again… unless you’ve suddenly learned how to breastfeed, I think I’m the only one who can do that. Leave so I can calm him down!”

“You’re being ridiculous!” Nathan said.
“So are you! Get out of here, Nathan. I don’t want to see you! That’s my birthday wish! OUT!!
Nathan glared at me for a long moment before turning and storming out of the tent.
