Chapter 241
Carter’s POV
Rachel is missing for a while.
I’d been tracking through the northern forests for days, and my body was feeling every mile.
My muscles ached from constant vigilance, my senses strained from sorting through the tangle of scents that filled these woods.
This forest had become a deadly chess board of competing powers. Nexus wolves searching desperately for their missing queen.
I leaned against a massive pine, letting its rough bark support my weight as I scanned the terrain ahead.
“Dammit,” I muttered, running a hand through my hair. Staying in one place too long was dangerous, especially this close to the front lines.
I needed to keep moving.
I pulled my hood forward as I approached, keeping my head down. These places had seen too much bloodshed to welcome strangers, but they were invaluable sources of information.
The tavern was exactly what I expected–dim, cramped, and smelling of cheap ale and unwashed bodies. I ordered a drink and found a corner table, tuning my enhanced hearing to the conversations around me.
“…they say the Iron Blood Alpha took another settlement yesterday,” a grizzled man whispered to his companion.
“That man’s a demon in battle,” his friend replied. “Handsome devil though. My sister’s friend saw him once–tall, built like a warrior, with those strange gray eyes. Said he fights like he’s possessed.”
My grip tightened around my mug.
Nathan.
“Any word on who he’s captured?” I asked, approaching their table.
The men looked up, suspicion hardening their features.
“Why do you care, stranger? the older one challenged.
I forced a casual shrug. “Just trying to avoid trouble. Heard he took a woman with copper hair.

They exchanged glances. “Aye, there’s talk of a woman. Special, they say. King’s Interested in her
My heart sank. If Jason wanted Rachel, it could only be for one reason~her bloodline.
The king was desperate for an heir, and Rachel’s unique heritage made her valuable breeding stock
in his eyes.
When I finally reached the front lines, my worst fears were confirmed.
The soldiers spoke in hushed tones about the Iron Blood Alpha who moved like a ghost through the forest, taking what he wanted and vanishing before reinforcements arrived.
“Nexus scouts have been searching for their queen for days,” a young soldier told me.
I tried reaching Rachel through our mind link, but found only silence.
The question tormented me–was she with Nathan willingly? Had she been taken by force?
I needed to find her, to make sure she was safe. If she wanted to be rescued, I would move heaven
and earth to make it happen.
After nearly a week of fruitless searching, I made a decision. The large–scale search parties were getting nowhere. Nathan was too skilled, too familiar with these forests.
But I had one advantage–we shared blood. I could think like him, anticipate his movements in ways
others couldn’t.
I missed having Lucas and my troops with me.
When I hurried out to look for Rachel, I was too frantic to think about bringing a second person. Under my breath, I said, “I’m such an idiot.”
For two days, I tracked through the dense forest, following patterns only I could see.
Nathan would need water, defensible terrain, and escape routes. He would avoid obvious locations but stay within striking distance of strategic targets.
When I finally spotted smoke rising through the trees in a pattern too controlled to be natural, I knew I’d found something.
Keeping downwind, I settled into a watching position, concealed by thick underbrush.
Hours passed. The forest grew darker. Then I caught a glimpse of movement–a tall figure with familiar posture moving between tents.
My heart raced.

Nathan!
But then the wind shifted.
I sensed the change instantly–the forest went silent as my scent carried toward the camp. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as I realized I’d been made.
Oh no!
I didn’t wait for confirmation. In one fluid motion, I was on my feet and running, the sound of pursuit already crackling through the underbrush behind me.
Ducking behind a massive oak, I stripped off my clothes, shifting into my wolf form.
The transformation sent waves of pain through my body as bones cracked and reformed, but I
welcomed the speed and strength it would give me.
Grabbing my clothes in my jaws, I bolted deeper into the forest.
My wolf was faster, more agile than any human form. I could outrun Nathan’s warriors–at least for a
while.
I doubled back toward a battlefield I’d passed days earlier, where the scents of blood, death, and dozens of wolves would mask my trail.
The stench hit me before I reached the clearing–metallic blood, decaying flesh, the lingering
markers of fear and rage.
I forced myself to run through the worst of it, letting the awful cocktail of smells cling to my fur.
Heart pounding, I made for the nearby village, weaving between buildings and through narrow
alleys.
Exhausted, I shifted back to human form, the pain barely registering through my fatigue.
I pulled on my clothes with trembling hands and slumped against a massive pine, my breath coming
in ragged gasps.
I needed rest. Just a few minutes. I’d been running for days, searching, evading. My eyes grew heavy as I leaned against the rough bark.
In my dreams, Rachel was there, smiling at me. We were far away from all this, in a small cabin by a lake. A child with copper hair played at her feet.
“I found you,” I told her, reaching out to touch her face.

“I knew you would,” she replied, her green eyes shining with trust.
“I’ll always find you,” I promised.
She leaned closer, her fingers intertwining with mine. “Do you remember when we first met?”
“How could I forget?” I smiled.
“And you couldn’t stop staring,” she teased, a playful glint in her eyes.
“Can you blame me?” I laughed softly. “I knew then what I know now.”
“What’s that?” she asked, tilting her head.
“That you’re the one I’ve been looking for my whole life,” I whispered.
Rachel blushed, her smile widening. “And you’re the one I never knew I needed until you were there.”
“We fit together,” I said, “like we were made for each other.”
“Like puzzle pieces,” she agreed, resting her head against my shoulder.
The child looked up at me with Rachel’s eyes, and I felt a surge of protectiveness unlike anything I’d ever known.
Just as I was about to kiss Rachel, a strange noise jerked me awake.
