Chapter 249
Rachel’s POV
I got my son back.
I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears when Gina delivered the news and brought my son with her.
After days of being separated from my son, after the emotional confrontation with Nathan and our deal, something was finally going my way.
He kept his word. He truly gave my son back to me.
“Nathan said you can have the baby stay here with you overnight,” Gina said, her expression brightening as she shared the
news.
“Really?” I asked, unable to hide my disbelief. Part of me wondered if this was some cruel joke.
“Yes,” Gina confirmed with a gentle smile. “I’m going to bring his things over now.”
Relief washed over me like a warm wave. The struggle to force myself to eat, to care for myself when all I wanted was to
hold my child–it had been worth it.
“Thank you, Gina.” The words felt inadequate for the gratitude swelling in my chest.
Gina shook her head. “You don’t have to thank me. This is something you earned yourself, not me.”
As Gina left to gather the baby’s things, I cradled my hungry son to my breast.
The feeling of him nursing, his tiny hand resting against my skin, was worth every moment of suffering I’d endured.
I stared down at him, memorizing every detail of his face. If we were going to escape, having him with me at night would
make it infinitely easier.
Gina returned shortly, carrying what passed for the baby’s belongings–a few changes of clothes, cloth diapers, and what appeared to be a handmade wooden cradle.
My attention was drawn to a small silver wolf bracelet on my son’s wrist that I hadn’t noticed before. Despite myself, warmth flooded my chest at the sight of it.
I asked, “The bracelet is..”
Gina smiled. “Nathan.”
I gave an embarrassed nod.
After the baby finished nursing, I settled him onto a makeshift bed of old blankets and pillows. I turned to Gina, curiosity getting the better of me.
“What about those rogues? What happened to them?” I asked, remembering the men Nathan had planned to execute.
Gina’s expression softened. “Alpha decided to give them proper training instead. Thank you for speaking up for them. I

know, deep down, you did it for him too. And on behalf of Alpha, I thank you
I felt a nutter of satisfaction knowing Nathan had listened to my suggestion, that those men would live because of m intervention. I carefully Ignored Gina’s comment about doing it “Tor him.”
“Thanks for letting me know what happened to them, I said simply.
Gina hesitated before continuing, her voice dropping slightly..“We might be facing another battle soon. There seem to be more rogues tracking our movements. Everyone in the pack is preparing.”
I tensed at the thought of fighting so close to my child. I remembered seeing Madison on the battlefield, and worry crept into my mind.
I never had the chance to tell anyone I saw Madison because I lost my freedom, I thought.
But maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. If Nathan is distracted dealing with an attack, I might find an opportunity to slip
away.
I didn’t doubt Nathan’s ability to protect me and the baby–but safety and happiness were two different things entirely.
Gina continued, “Alpha thinks it might be Madison’s forces preparing to attack. The last battle with your troops was
intense, and he’s worried and angry about it.”
Well… I guess I underestimated Nathan’s abilities.
“What’s new? Isn’t he always angry?” I said with a dismissive tone.
Gina’s face fell into a sad expression. “He’s just not himself anymore.”
I felt troubled by this too, but I had sworn not to get involved with anything related to Nathan anymore.
For the next few days, I didn’t see Nathan, which didn’t bother me. I had my baby with me, and Gina visited often. But when I was alone and the baby was sleeping, my mind would wander.
I held a knife to his chest, I thought, remembering how Nathan had stood there, not fighting back.
And still I ended up in his bed.
How shameful!
Had he calculated that I wouldn’t really hurt him and used that against me?
“Bastard! Asshole!” I muttered under my breath, but eventually admitted to myself that no matter how angry I got, I couldn’t deliberately harm Nathan.
Gina’s arrival interrupted my thoughts. “Just as Alpha suspected, it seems Madison’s forces have been active around our territory,” she reported. “As time passes, Alpha is getting angrier about the situation, preparing for battle.”
I wondered if the attackers could possibly be my own people–Selena, or even Carter coming to rescue me.
“Are the others ready for battle?” I asked.

*Most are prepared, Gina replied. “Everyone seems tense, waiting for the chance to return to the battlefield
“How is Apollo doing?” I asked, changing the subject.
Gina smiled, “He’s doing well. He’s been helping with training. Since he’s proven his loyalty, Alpha and Tyler have given him more responsibilities. And one day I saw he kissed Victoria! She hasn’t been able to visit your because she’s been really busy lately.”
“I know. I’m so happy she found her true love,” I said, genuinely happy for Victoria.
Gina stayed only briefly before leaving.
Left alone once more, my thoughts drifted back to Nathan. I hated to admit it, but when he wasn’t around, I missed him- and when he returned, he frustrated me beyond belief.
Perhaps what I missed was another version of Nathan entirely.
As if summoned by my thoughts, Nathan appeared in my doorway. He stood there looking irritated, staring at me without speaking.
My heart rate increased. The silence stretched between us until I finally broke it.
“What do you want now?” I asked.
Nathan moved toward me quickly, his expression shifting. I tensed, unsure if he was about to scold me or do something else…
