Chapter 256
Rachel’s POV
I closed my eyes, bracing for death.
Nathan’s fist was coming straight for me–I could feel the displacement of air, the sheer force of his rage bearing down.
His strength could easily shatter my skull, end my life in an instant.
I’d pushed him too far, and now I would pay the ultimate price.
Tears slipped from beneath my closed eyelids as Mateo’s face filled my mind.
My baby. I’d never see him grow up. Never hear his first words or watch his first steps.
At least he’s safe with Carter and Selena. At least he’ll be loved.
A bitter smile crossed my lips as memories washed over me.
The day my father sold me to the notoriously ruthless Alpha of the Ironjaw pack.
How terrified I’d been. But Nathan hadn’t been the monster of legends–he’d been handsome, complex, and somewhere along the way, I’d fallen hopelessly in love with him.
In my next life, I won’t make the same mistake!
I won’t love you again, Nathan!
But the fist didn’t come..
Instead, a deafening crack thundered through the forest, followed by a shower of bark, leaves, and twigs raining down on
- me.
My eyes flew open.
Nathan’s fist was embedded in the massive oak tree beside me, his knuckles torn and bleeding.
The tree trunk–at least sixty feet tall and centuries old–had bent at an unnatural angle, its bark shattered, wood splintering outward. It looked ready to topple at any moment.
Blood poured from Nathan’s hand, skin torn open by the rough bark, but he didn’t stop.
He pulled back and struck again.
And again.
And again.
Each blow more savage than the last, until his fists were so covered in blood and wounds they were barely recognizable.

Finally, he stopped, his fist half–buried in the mangled trunk, chest heaving with ragged breaths,
Blood dripped between his fingers, forming a small puddle on the forest floor. His eyes were red–rimmed and wet, but he wouldn’t look at me.
I stared in disbelief. Nathan had just destroyed a sixty–foot oak tree rather than hit me.
My instinct was to reach for him, to help him with his wounds, but I caught myself.
Nathan can’t be changed. The thought came unbidden but certain.
This momentary vulnerability would pass, and he would become the cold monster again.
I could already see it happening–his eyes narrowing, his face contorting with anger rather than pain.
I knew Selena and Carter must have escaped by now. And I knew my fate–I was Nathan’s prisoner once again.
Running would be pointless. All fight had left me. Nathan had lost his mind completely, and I was a person without hope.
I’ll never escape him. Now I might never see my son again.
When his breathing finally steadied, Nathan spoke without turning. “Let’s go, Rachel.”
Several of Nathan’s warriors arrived, all bloodied and exhausted from what I assumed was the end of the battle.
I stated, “Remember what I told you, Nathan. My body may be here, but you can never imprison my soul. I don’t belong to
you.”
He didn’t respond, just stared at me with those grey eyes that seemed numb to the world.
The warriors surrounded me as we began walking back to camp. Nathan followed, his eyes occasionally catching mine..
I felt confused by my own emotions. Why did seeing Nathan hurt make me feel worse? What was wrong with me?
The camp was in ruins. Most of the tents were damaged, with werewolves working to salvage what they could. My prison tent, however, remained perfectly intact.
Gina was in human form, helping Apollo tend to injured wolves. When she spotted me, her eyes brightened and she ran toward me. “Rachel!”
“Stop!” Nathan barked. “You’re no longer allowed to see Rachel! No one is!”
Gina’s face fell in confusion. She glanced at Nathan’s bloodied hands. “What happened to your hands?”
“Don’t bother me,” Nathan snapped rudely.
Gina lowered her head but still cast a concerned look my way. I wanted to apologize, to thank her for everything, but I could only continue walking.
“Where’s the baby?” Gina called after us.
Nathan whirled toward her, but Tyler quickly pulled Gina away, making apologetic gestures.

“Stop being such an asshole!” I hissed at Nathan, no longer afraid of him hitting me.
I felt defeated, my chest heavy as stone as we approached the tent.
Inside, everything was almost the same as before, except Mateo was gone.
The cradle Nathan had made stood empty. Most of my belongings had disappeared–only the canvas bed with its dirty blankets and some of the items previously sent to me remained.
“You will stay here,” Nathan commanded. “No more visitors. Just you… as my prisoner.”
I didn’t turn to face him. “You may have my body, but you will never have me, Nathan. If you ever find your soul again, you’ll realize what a terrible person you’ve become. I don’t want to see your face again.”
Nathan growled but said nothing before leaving the tent, ordering the guards to watch me closely.
I sighed wearily and collapsed onto the canvas bed, leaning against the tent wall with my knees pulled to my chest. Tve done this before; I can do it again.”
But a despair unlike anything I’d ever felt washed over me.
My son was gone, and I might never have the chance to see him again.
I closed my eyes, imagining my soul flying free to find Mateo.
