Chapter 257
Carter’s POV

training grounds of the Nexus pack, watching warriors prepare for what seemed increasingly
The past few weeks with Rachel had been the happiest of my life. When we’d escaped together, I’d felt a sense of purpose and belonging I’d never known before.
Now she was gone, trapped again with her mentally unstable half–brother. My chest
ached at the thought.
“I should have protected you better,” I whispered to the wind, hoping somehow she might feel my regret.
I’d completed Rachel’s request–bringing Mateo safely to her people–but the victory felt hollow without her.
The baby was growing quickly, already showing signs of Nathan’s features when he was serious.
It was like holding a miniature version of my half–brother, except when Mateo smiled. Those smiles were all Rachel, bright and hopeful.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. I had to find a way to rescue her, to bring her home to her son. To me…
“Alpha Carter,” a voice called from behind.
I turned to see Selena approaching, her expression grim but determined. “The council is ready to meet with you now.”
I nodded, squaring my shoulders as I followed her toward the council chambers.
As we entered the grand hall, all conversations ceased. Every pair of eyes turned to me, some curious, others suspicious.
I had, after all, been complicit in keeping their princess captive for months. Yet I’d also returned their prince to them, and now stood as their best hope for rescuing Rachel.
“Please, take a seat,” Selena gestured to a chair near the head of the table.
Once seated, she addressed the room. “We’ve gathered today to discuss several urgent matters, but first and foremost is the situation with our princess.”
A council member immediately stood, his fist pounding the table. “We will fight for our princess! We need her back at any
cost!”
Another rose, her face lined with concern/“Our small skirmishes have already left many warriors injured. We’ve barely managed since the princess left, but we cannot continue like this.”
Selena frowned. “Though we’ve rescued the young prince, the Ironjaw Alpha has lost his son. Approaching t again will be even more difficult now,
incess
“Are you suggesting we abandon our princess?” a third council member demanded, his voice rising with indignation. Another joined in “We have a strong army and brave warriors. We do not fear the Ironjaw!”
I almost laughed at that. These people who shouted the loudest had clearly never faced Nathan in combat.

They didn’t understand what they were up against. The man I’d encountered in the forest was more dangerous than ever- a killing machine fueled by rage and loss.
Yep. A killing machine.
“No,” Selena clarified firmly. “I’m saying we need a careful plan.”
She turned toward a stern–looking man at the far end of the table. “General Reed, what’s your assessment of our military readiness?”
General Caspian Reed stood, his weathered face grave. “We’ve just fought a significant battle. Our forces need time to recover. At present, we are not a match for the Ironjaw Alpha.”
“That’s exactly the point!” someone shouted. “Our princess can help heal our injured!”
“Yes! With our princess’s blood, our army would be invincible!”
“We want our princess back!”
I felt my jaw tighten at their words.
They spoke of Rachel as if she were nothing more than a walking medicine cabinet, a blood bank on legs. My fists clenched under the table.
Selena noticed my expression. “Carter, you’ve been quiet. What are your thoughts?”
Swallowing my irritation, I met her gaze. “I understand everyone’s concerns. The princess is vital to your pack. But rescuing her presents significant challenges.”
“Then tell us your opinion,” one impatient council member demanded. “Are you willing to fight for our princess?”
“No,” I answered simply.
Selena’s brow furrowed in confusion. Another council member fell silent, waiting.
A war–hungry councilor sneered, “We saved you. Our princess trusted you. And you–you’re a coward!”
