Chapter 265
Rachel’s POV
The sight of delicate wildflowers on my table was the first thing I noticed when I woke.
I approached the arrangement, my fingers hovering over the soft petals. For a moment, I contemplated grabbing the vase and hurling it against the wall. Let the water soak into the rugs.
Let the glass shatter and the flowers wither on the floor–a fitting metaphor for how he’d treated me.
But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. These flowers were beautiful and innocent, much like I’d been before all this began. Instead, I arranged them carefully next to the pearl necklace Nathan had given me yesterday.
I sighed, running my fingers over one silky petal. “At least you brighten the place up a bit.”
The sound of raised voices outside my door pulled me from my thoughts.
“Look, I don’t give a shit what your orders are.” It was Gina’s voice, sharp with anger. “Either you let me in to see Rachel
right now, or I swear to god I’ll cut your balls off and shove them down your throat.”
“Gina, please,” came a softer, wavering voi
that I recognized as Victoria’s. “Maybe we should just—*
One of the guards responded, “Alpha has expressly forbidden us from allowing anyone except himself to see Rachel.”
“Then go tell Nathan!” Gina snapped. There was a sound of a scuffle. “Go tell him right now, or you’re next!”
Seconds later, my door burst open. Gina stormed in with Victoria trailing behind. My heart clenched at the sight of
Victoria’s red–rimmed eyes and tear–streaked face.
“What’s happening?” I asked.
“It’s Nathan,” Gina said, her face twisted with rage. “He’s completely lost it this time.”
Victoria’s lower lip trembled. She choked out, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks, “He’s… he’s going to whip Tyler!”
I asked, “What? Tyler? But why would he… why would Nathan do that?”
-Gina paced the room, her fingers clenching and unclenching. “Tyler released some of the prisoners–young wolves, barely
more than children. Nathan ordered all prisoners executed, but Tyler couldn’t do it.”
“And for that, Nathan’s going to whip him? His beta? His best friend?” I couldn’t wrap my mind around it.
“Twenty lashes,” Victoria sobbed. “He won’t survive it, Rachel. Nobody could.”
“That’s… that’s monstrous,” I whispered. “Tyler was right to free them.”
Gina stopped pacing and faced me. “We can’t let that happen, Rachel. Her voice was determined, but her eyes betrayed her desperation. “Tyler doesn’t deserve to be treated that way.
I ran my hands through my hair, feeling helpless. “What can I do? You think I can somehow break Tyler out of wherever they’re holding him?”

“No,” Gina sald, shaking her head. “The only way to stop this is if you can convince Nathan
I laughed bitterly. “Me? He doesn’t listen to anyone’s opinion. Why would he listen to mine?”
Victoria stepped forward, her tear–stained face earnest. “But you did it once before. You’ve done it before. He’s the only one who would listen to you.”
Gina’s eyes locked with mine. “Please, Rachel? This is the only way to save Tyler. He will listen to you…”
I hesitated, doubt gnawing at me. Could I really sway Nathan? And even if I tried, would it put me in danger?
Suddenly, the door swung open again. Nathan stood there, his massive frame filling the doorway, eyes flashing with anger.
“Listen to you what?” he growled, his gaze darting between the three of us. “Guards, take Gina and Victoria to-
“Nathan!” I shouted, my voice stronger than I felt.
His eyes snapped to mine, narrowing dangerously.
Gina and Victoria slipped past him without another word, leaving me alone with a furious Alpha. The guards retreated, closing the door behind them.
I took a deep breath. “Please, sit down.”
Nathan’s nostrils flared, but surprisingly, he took a seat in the chair across from me. I gestured toward the flowers and
necklace.
“Thank you for the flowers,” I said softly. “And the necklace.”
“You’re welcome,” he replied, his eyes still hard, though I noticed him glance at how I’d arranged the flowers, a flicker of surprise crossing his face.
I swallowed hard, hating how easily I could slip into this softer tone with him.
“What happened with Tyler?” I asked carefully.
Nathan’s jaw tightened. “I don’t appreciate people disobeying direct orders.”
“I can’t blame you for that,” I said, choosing my words with care. “But he’s always been so loyal to you.”
“He took it upon himself today,” Nathan grumbled. “I gave him a direct order, and he defied it.”
“Did he say why?”
“He thought it wasn’t necessary.” Nathan’s fist clenched on his knee. “But it’s not his place to question whether my orders are moral or not!”
I leaned forward slightly. “You’ve been different lately, Nathan. You’ve become more… cruel. I met his gaze steadily. “Are you prepared to lose your best friend forever?”
“He deserves it!” Nathan snapped, but I caught the slight wavering in his expression.

“Do your people think you’re a weak leader, Nathan?” I asked.
“No. His reply was immediate.
“Then why do you need to prove yourself through cruelty?”
“I can’t have others thinking I’m a weak leader,” he insisted, but his voice had lost some of its fire.
“No, they won’t,” I said gently. “They’ll see you as a merciful leader. Reasonable.”
Nathan fell silent, his eyes searching mine. For a moment, I glimpsed the man I once thought I could love–thoughtful, measured, not consumed by rage and power.
“Fine,” he finally said. “I’ll consider it.”
Relief washed through me. With Nathan, “I’ll consider it”
was as good as a yes.
“Thank you,” I whispered. “For Tyler, and for those young lives.”
Nathan stood and moved toward me. I tensed as he leaned down, his breath warm against my ear.
“I’ll grant your wish,” he murmured, his voice low and husky. “Just as long as…”
He left the sentence hanging as he pressed his lips to my cheek in a lingering kiss. Then his mouth moved to my lips. My skin burned at the contact, and confusion swirled through me.
What was he asking for in return?
Nathan pulled back, his eyes dark with something I couldn’t quite identify. “I’m glad to see you out of bed,” he said simply, then turned and left.
I remained seated, my hand rising to touch my cheek then my lips where his lips had been.
