“Let me guess. Kael tapped his chin in mock contemplation. ‘I bet you’re headed to the palace. His gaze swept over our group. “Where’s your Ironjaw Alpha, sweetheart?”
He doesn’t recognize Nathan, I realized with a jolt. Nathan’s eyes were gray now, not gold. This could work to our advantage.
Before I could respond, Nathan and three other wolves lunged forward with shocking speed.
Kael cursed and shifted immediately, his red and black fur gleaming in the dappled sunlight as he collided with Nathan in a blur of snapping teeth and furious growls.
Tyler intercepted the other wolves, preventing them from joining the fight.
I watched in horror and fascination as Nathan and Kael circled each other, muscles rippling beneath fur, each looking for an opening.
When they clashed again, it was with bone–jarring force. Teeth flashed and fur flew as they tore at each other.
Despite all I knew about Nathan’s past actions, I couldn’t help the surge of fear that rose in me at the thought of him being hurt.
I couldn’t bear to see Nathan hurt.
The fight lasted only minutes, but it felt like hours. Finally, Nathan had Kael pinned to the ground, his teeth at the enemy’s throat.
Kael let out an agonized howl, the painful sound echoing through the clearing. Kael’s wolves shifted nervously, unwilling to advance against the victor.
If Nathan had truly wanted to kill Carter that day, I thought with sudden clarity, Carter would never have survived.
Nathan didn’t kill Kael, though. A living Kael was more useful than a dead one–his troops would wait for his orders.
I approached, staring down at the subdued wolf prince. “Your Highness, allow me to introduce Alpha Nathan Blackwood, also known as…‘ I paused for effect, “the King of the Ironjaw pack!”
Kael’s eyes widened.
“Surprised, aren’t you?” I continued. “Not only is Alpha Nathan here, but his forces are as well!” I gestured behind us as if indicating a substantial army. “Let us pass, and your Alpha lives!”
Kael stayed silent, but his eyes practically screamed disbelief.
I raised my voice to address his troops. “Let us pass, and we’ll spare your Alpha! Now!!”
After a tense moment, Kael’s wolves parted, creating a path between them.
It worked! I could hardly believe it.
Through our mental link, l’instructed Adam, “Start moving the people through. Quickly but calmly.”
The first group of civilians began to move past Kael’s forces. I allowed myself a small breath of relief.
We might actually make it.
The fight lasted only minutes, but it felt like hours…

through the clearing.
Kael’s wolves shifted nervously, unwilling to advance against the victor. I stopped and turned my head to see that woman!
Madison emerged from the trees with another pack of wolves. Her eyes locked on me immediately, then darted to Nathan and the pinned Kael.
She shifted to human form, her face contorted with rage.
“Bitch!” she screeched. “Release my man now, or I swear I’ll make your worst nightmares seem like pleasant dreams! You’ll regret every second of your miserable life!”
“Madison,” I called back, “stay where you are, and we’ll release
Kael!*
“You’ll release him now!” she spat, taking a step forward. “Don’t make me come over there and put you on your back, little bitch! Your Nathan is holding down my love, and you have no one to protect you. You know your pathetic little wolf is no match for me!”
I summoned every ounce of confidence I could muster. “There are plenty of warriors between you and me, Madison! You won’t take two steps before my army tears you to pieces!”
Madison threw her head back and laughed maniacally, but she didn’t move forward. My bluff might be working.
“Laugh all you want, Madison,” I called, “but you won’t be laughing when my army chews up yours and spits it out!”
Madison’s wanderers shifted uneasily behind her. Good–they were buying it.
“Release him now!” Madison demanded again. Nathan answered with a threatening growl that made even me flinch.
“Not unless I’m dead,” I replied coldly.
“That can certainly be arranged.”
“Not today,” I shot back. “My forces would destroy you… Now back up fifty paces, and we’ll release Kael.”
With a snarl of frustration, Madison began to retreat, her eyes never leaving mine.
The second group of civilians was just starting to move through when a child’s voice pierced the silence.
“Mommy! More big wolves!”
My blood ran cold. I turned to see a little boy pointing toward the tree line–where there were no wolves at all!
Kael’s face twisted into a savage grin.
