Nathan’s POV
The map spread before me was a canvas
deadly noose around Nexus.
I studied the terrain, desperately searching
impending disaster. Red markers outnumbered our blue ones by at least five to one, forming a
advantage that wasn’t there.
“Alpha, we’ve received more reports, the messenger announced, his voice strained with exhaustion. “The enemy’s right wing has at least eight thousand warriors. The left wing counts no fewer than ten thousand. Their center holds another ten thousand.”
1 gripped the edge of the table, my knuckles turning whit
white. “And our forces?”
“Six thousand capable fighters, sir,” Tyler reported grimly. “Maybe seven if we include the barely recovered.”
Another messenger burst through the door. “Kael’s forces have been spotted moving east. They’ll reach the northern perimeter within two days.”
“And King Jason’s troops?” I asked, already knowing the answer wouldn’t bring comfort.
“Moving south toward us, sir. Estimated arrival in three days.”
Fuck.
We were facing overwhelming odds, with enemies converging from multiple directions. The room seemed to close in around me as I studied the map again.
We’d be fighting at least five to one, possibly worse if our intelligence was incomplete. And if they managed to surround us completely…
“They’re going to cut off our supply routes,” I muttered, more to myself than anyone else. “Without reinforcements or supplies, we’ll be-*
My heart suddenly began pounding wildly, a rush of terror washing over me that had nothing to do with the military situation.
I couldn’t think, couldn’t feel, couldn’t breathe. It
as if a part of me was dying.
Rachel!!!
“Tyler, take over,” I ordered, pushing away from the table. I need… I need to think.”
Without waiting for a response, I strode from the command room, my pace quickening with each step.
That feeling of dread intensified, a terrible sensation calling to me, urging me to move faster and faster.
The hallway to Rachel’s quarters seemed endless. My wolf was howling inside me, frantic and desperate.
Everything felt hopeless, like the world was ending and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
Is something wrong with her? Is she…?
When I finally reached Rachel’s door, I didn’t bother knocking. I burst inside and froze at the threshold.
Gina and Victoria were huddled by Rachel’s bed, tears streaming down their faces. And Rachel… she lay motionless on the bed, her skin pale, her white hair spread across the pillow like freshly fallen snow.
My heart stopped.
Chapter 291
“Rachel? I called softly, moving toward the bed as if in a trance.
She didn’t move. Didn’t stir. Didn’t open those beautiful green eyes I’d come to cherish beyond reason.
“Shh! She’s resting. Can’t you see?
Gina and Victoria, my voice cracking despite my efforts to stay composed.
Their sobbing was irrational, unnecessary. Rachel was fine. She was just tired. “What the fuck are you doing?! She’s fine! Can’t you see her chest moving? My words hung hollow in the still

My chest tightened painfully as the temperature
of her
hands began to cool, my heart freezing along with them.
Breathing became difficult, the air suddenly too
to fill my lungs. A lump formed in my throat, choking me from within.
“No,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “No, no, no.” Hot tears welled in my eyes, blurring my vision.
I fell to my knees beside the bed, still clutching her hand. “Why? Why would fate do this to me? My girl.”
I blinked rapidly, trying to clear my vision as tears silently streamed down my face. With my free hand, I discreetly wiped them away.
She didn’t even give me a chance to apologize for everything I did when I imprisoned her. I’m so ashamed of myself.
My heart felt like ashes in my chest.
Empty.
Hollow.
Dead.
“I want to die with you,” I whispered, my shoulders shaking with silent, devastating sorrow as I pressed her cooling hand against my wet cheek.
“There must be something we can do…” I looked up desperately at Gina and Victoria. “No! It can’t end like this!”
A calm voice came from behind me. “We can do nothing.”
I whirled around to find Adam standing in the doorway.
“You knew,” I growled, rising to my feet. “You knew this would happen when she used the Moon Goddess’s power. And you let her do it!”
Adam didn’t flinch under my accusation. “Queen Rachel chose to sacrifice herself to save everyone.”
“Why the fuck didn’t you stop her?!” I roared.
But the person I should truly blame was staring back at me in every reflective surface.
If I hadn’t become a wanderer… if I had been strong enough to defeat Madison and Kael’s forces on my own, Rachel wouldn’t have needed to
die.
“I wish I could die in her place,” I muttered, the fight draining out of me as quickly as it had flared.
“In all the history of the Nexus queens, Gina asked suddenly, her voice thick with tears, “has there never been an exception? I remember reading about a queen whose hair turped white but ruled for many years after. Adam, please tell us out that queen–maybe we can find a
way!”
Chapter 291
Adam hesitated, looking uncomfortable. “That was just a legend from long ago…”
“Her Majesty wanted to pass peacefully,” he added, his eyes darting to Rachel’s still form.
“Tell us, goddammit!” I bellowed, my patience snapping like a dry twig.
Adam sighed heavily, relenting under the weight of my fury. “It is said that our kind are descendants of the Moon Goddess herself, which is why our leaders can borrow her power, as you’ve witnessed. However, the Goddess is just. Such power should not exist in the mortal realm, and using it comes at a price. Our queens must repay the Goddess with their lives, as gratitude for allowing us to use her power. In return, the Moon Goddess grants our queens a place in her eternal paradise. Unless…”
“Unless what?” My voice was barely a whisper, hope flaring painfully in my chest.
“Unless her true mate is willing to pay the price to the Moon Goddess instead.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. “Her true mate?”
Adam nodded solemnly.
“So her mate could save her life?” I pressed, desperate for any sliver of hope.
