The effect was immediate. The Ironjaw warriors faltered as they spotted their Alpha in the cage, bloodied and beaten. Kael’s forces surged forward with renewed vigor.
“Tell your Queen,” Kael shouted to the Ironjaw pack, “if she wants Nathan back, she can come here on her knees and beg my mate!”
Madison whipped her head toward Kael, eyes flashing with momentary anger at the mention of Rachel, but it passed quickly as she returned to gloating at the Ironjaw pack’s evident dismay.
I scanned the forest edge, spotting Tyler and Jay’s signals. Almost time.
Kael’s second wave of wolves charged up the ridge toward where Nathan and I stood with the cage. I held my breath, counting silently.
One… two… three…
The first wave of attackers hit the camouflaged covering over the trap. The fabric gave way, plunging hundreds of wolves into a deep pit filled with black, sticky tar.
Their screams echoed across the battlefield as they struggled to escape, only sinking deeper.
A second wave, unable to stop their momentum, tumbled in after them, piling on top of their trapped comrades.
I ran to the edge of the ridge and looked down, a small smile forming on my lips. Thousands of wolves thrashed helplessly in the tar pit, their panic rising as they realized they were stuck.
“Time to go,” I muttered, sprinting back to Nathan’s cage. He was gripping the bars, struggling to pull himself upright. Two guards remained, both looking confused but drawing their weapons as I approached,
I pulled my knife, lunging at the first guard. He slashed at me, but I drove my blade deep into his throat. Hot blood sprayed across my face as the guard gurgled and collapsed.
Lucas transformed into his wolf and tackled the second guard, ripping into the man’s shoulder. I fumbled with the lock, my blood–slicked fingers making it difficult to insert the key.
The lock finally clicked open. Nathan crawled out, remaining in human form–too weak to shift.
“Lucas, put him on your back,” I ordered, helping lift Nathan onto Lucas’s back.
I shifted into my wolf form, and we took off along the narrow path we’d left through the trap.
We’d made it halfway across when I heard Kael gaining on us. Lucas, burdened with Nathan’s weight, couldn’t match my speed.
“Carter! You’re fucking deceiving me.” Kael’s enraged scream pierced the air. “I’m going to kill you myself!”
I looked up to see Kael charging toward us, still in human form but ready to shift at any moment.
This isn’t going to work. Not like this..
I stopped and turned, facing the approaching threat.
“Carter, get back he..re!” Nathan said weakly.
I used mind link, “Get out of here… just fucking go! I’ve got this.”
Chapter 298
I cut off his mental protest before he could form it fully.
I smiled, “Have a little faith, alright? Leave! Bye! Brother…”
Then Lucas grabbed Nathan and ran off.
I launched myself at Kael, slamming into his back legs and sending him tumbling. He howled in fury, scrambling to regain his footing.
A wave of intense heat suddenly washed over us–Tyler had ignited the oil in the trap. The screams from the pit rose to a crescendo before abruptly falling silent.
In the distance, Madison’s howl of despair pierced the silence.
Kael and another wolf came charging at me with ferocious intensity. Kael lunged forward with lightning speed, his razor–sharp fangs piercing deep into my neck, sending waves of excruciating pain shooting through my entire body.”
With every ounce of strength I had, I thrashed violently until I finally managed to throw him to the ground.
Despite the blood pouring from the wound on my neck, a surge of confidence welled up inside m
I could handle these bastards.
If I was going down, I’d make damn sure Kael was coming with me.
I lunged while Kael was still regaining his balance, sinking my teeth into his shoulder and tearing. Blood filled my mouth as I ripped through muscle and tendon.
Kael’s claws caught me across the head, tearing through my fur and skin. The impact sent me flying, but not before I saw Kael collapse to the ground, motionless.
My head hit a rock with a crack. Pain exploded through my skull, and my vision swam.
I’m dying.
The thought came with strange clarity as I lay on the cold ground, blood pooling beneath me, soaking into the earth.
Nathan really, really owes me for this one.
I tried to move, but my limbs wouldn’t respond. My heart pounded sluggishly in my chest, each beat weaker than the last.
I hope it was worth it.
Memories of Rachel flooded my fading mind–her smile, her laugh, the way sky. A single tear slipped from my eye, trailing through my fur.

I love you, Rachel.
Sorry.
My wolf mouth curled into what might have been a smile. My eyelids fluttered once, twice, and then darkness claimed me, pulling me under like a gentle tide.
