Chapter 314
Carter studied me with curious eyes. ‘Rachel, you’ve changed quite a bit.”
*I’ll take that as a compliment.”
As we settled in to wait, my mind turned to the broader conflict. “Carter, can you tell me more about the relationship between King Dylan and King Jason? I know they’re enemies, but I need to understand more about their motivations.“.
Carter sighed, sliding down to sit across from me. “They’ve been rivals since they were young. Different ideologies, different visions for the future of our kind. Dylan believes in pure–blood supremacy and traditional pack structures. Jason has been more… progressive, though just as power–hungry.”
“And now?”
“Currently, they’re cooperating because you and Nathan represent a bigger target for both of them. They’re willing to work together to eliminate the two of you first, then go back to fighting each other.” He gave me a pointed look. “Politics makes strange bedfellows, as they say.
“What about Kael? Where does he fit into all this?”
Carter’s expression hardened. “Kael is power–hungry. What he really wants is Vortex and Phantom Island. The longer this war drags on, the happier he is because when both kings are busy fighting each other or fighting you, Kael is happy no one has time to focus on his island.” He paused, his eyes narrowing. “He’s a troublemaker who’s looking for the right opportunity to seize power.”
“And Madison? Her connection to King Jason and his queen?”
“Jason once considered Kael an ally because Madison connected Jason with your bloodline and told him where it came from.” Carter’s voice grew cold. “You know what makes people desperate, Rachel?” He didn’t wait for my answer. “It’s when they think they have hope and then lose it. He leaned forward. “So, that said, I don’t think Jason considers Kael his best friend anymore.”
I absorbed this information silently, weighing it against my developing plans. “I’m asking because I have a plan. One that might buy us some
time.”
Carter raised an eyebrow, looking amused. “Since when are you interested in war strategy?”
“Since I realized I couldn’t count on Nathan anymore,” I answered honestly.
Hours passed as we kept vigil. I checked the moon’s position through a small opening in the cave roof. “It’s almost time,” I said, feeling nervousness flutter in my stomach.
What if it didn’t work? What if all our efforts were for nothing?
“It’ll be fine,” Carter said, seeming to read my thoughts.
With trembling hands, I removed the Dark Moon Mandala from its protective case.
The flower glowed softly in the dim light of the cave, its petals now containing the precious nectar we’d risked so much to obtain.
I gently pried open Nathan’s mouth and carefully let the first drop of nectar fall onto his tongue. Then anot.
And another.
As the twelfth drop fell, the Dark Moon Mandala completely withered, turning to dust in my palm. I whispered a prayer of thanks to the Moon Goddess and blew the remaining powder info the air, watching as it dissolved into nothingness.
We waited, but Nathan showed no immediate signs of improvement. His heartbeat seemed stronger, but his breathing remained steady, unchanged from before.
Exhaustion washed over me suddenly.
Chapter 314
“Rachel, you need sleep,” Carter urged. ‘Go on.”
Too tired to argue, I lay down on a small pad next to Nathan’s makeshift bed, my body practically collapsing from fatigue.
Despite my anxiety about Nathan’s condition and worry for our friends fighting Madison, sleep claimed me almost instantly
In my dreams, I found myself back at the temple I’d visited before–the one where Nathan had told me he never loved me. The temple don closed, and no matter how I pushed, it wouldn’t budge.
“Nathan?” I called, knocking on the door. ‘Nathan, are you in there?”
No answer came, and a sense of desperation washed over me. I’d been locked out before, I remembered. Nathan had been inside. I’d asked hist a question, and after he answered, he pushed me out and locked the door.
I’d asked if he loved me. His answer had been simple, “Never.”
“Nathan!” I cried in my dream, tears streaming down my face. “You never loved me? Never? Then why did you sacrifice yourself for me? Was it just for Mateo?”
“Rachel? Rachel!”
I jolted awake, Carter’s voice pulling me from the painful dream. I blinked, disoriented, as my eyes focused on his face hovering above me.
“What is it?” I mumbled, pushing myself up.
Carter’s eyes were wide, his expression a mix of excitement and disbelief.
“Nathan’s finger just moved!” he exclaimed.
