Nathan’s POV
Our awkward exchange was interrupted by Adam approaching from down the hall.
“Your Majesty, welcome back,” he said to Rachel with a respectful nod. “You had instructed us to detain the spy until your returns. What workt you like us to do with her?”
“Bring her to the great hall,” Rachel directed before turning to me. “Alpha Nathan, would you like to join us?”
“I’d be happy to,” I replied.
“You can hand the child over to- Rachel began, gesturing toward a nearby attendant.
“No, I think he’s good with his parents,” I interjected.
Rachel’s eyes widened, and I swear I saw a hint of pink color her cheeks.
We walked together to the great hall, Mateo still in my arms. Clara was already there, shackled and guarded.
She was a woman with vibrant red hair and pale skin with a rosy undertone, her gray–blue eyes glaring defiantly at Rachel as she took her seat.
“You’re Clara? Are you Jason’s people or Dylan’s?” Rachel asked calmly.
“You’re wasting your time with me,” Clara spat. “Why don’t you just kill me and get it over with?”
“Because I have some questions for you,” Rachel replied.
“Ha, fuck you! I’m not telling you anything!” Clara snarled.
Caelum stepped forward, fury etched on his face. “How dare you-
“Caelum, stop, Rachel commanded, her voice firm but not harsh.
Clara turned her attention to me, her eyes blazing with hate. “I am loyal to my country and my king Jason, unlike some damn exiled traitor!”
The words were bitter, but before I could respond, Rachel’s clear voice cut through the room.
“Clara, you’re wrong! Alpha Nathan’s loyalty is to his country, not to any one person. He wasn’t exiled because he did something wrong–he was exiled because he was protecting Emerald City too well!”
I stared at her, wide–eyed, a warm current flowing through my heart. She was defending me.
In my arms, Mateo grabbed one of my fingers, squeezing it in his tiny fist.
I couldn’t help but smile down at him, adjusting my hold to cradle him more securely.
Caelum stepped forward, his expression darkening. “Why waste time explaining to her? If she wants to die, let’s oblige her!*
“Come on then!” Clara shouted. “I’ll die a hero!”
“Oh, girl, you’re not just stubborn, you’re stupid!” Caelum laughed cruelly. “You asshole! Because of you, many people could be dead by now! Because of your king, many people are already dead, and you call yourself a hero?!”
Chapter 320
“You don’t know what you’re talking about, Clara retorted, though her voice held less conviction.
Rachel approached Clara, her posture regal and composed. “If sacrificing my life alone could bring peace to everyone, I would do it without. hesitation.”
I frowned at her words.
“However,” Rachel continued, “what I want to ask you is this: if King Jason gets what he wants–my blood and Nathan’s death–do you truly believe the war would end?”
“King Jason said if Nathan dies and you’re captured, he would end the war!” Clara insisted.
“Before the king decided this was no longer about defeating invaders but ensuring no one would threaten his heir’s throne, Alpha Nathan had almost won the war for King Jason,” Rachel said, her words measured and clear. “Tell me, Clara, what kind of king sacrifices his best general over an unborn child’s claim?”
Clara’s eyes widened. “That’s not true…”
“Even if Jason got what he wanted, he would immediately go back to fighting Dylan,” Rachel continued. “Without Nathan, he is weak. He can’t win. But he’ll keep trying… How many more families will be destroyed? All because of your king’s selfish pursuit of his unborn child?
Clara lowered her head, slowly shaking it. “I don’t… I never thought of it that way… Your Majesty.”
“Clara, you seem like an intelligent person. Is this really who you want to serve?” Rachel asked.
Clara remained silent, her expression conflicted.
“Now, you will still be taken to the dungeons to serve your sentence for your crimes,” Rachel stated. Clara nodded in acceptance.
“Your Majesty… you said you wanted to ask me something. What was it?” Clara asked.
Rachel smiled as she returned to her seat. “What I wanted to ask you is: if given the chance, would you fight for me?”
Clara looked at the floor, considering. “…I don’t know.”
As the guards led Clara away, all I could do was stare at Rachel with awe, wonder, and pride. My heart swelled with a bittersweet mixture of emotions–elation at her strong, yet a profound sadness that settled deep in my chest.
This timid girl had transformed into a merciful and wise leader–a true queen. How far she had come from the shy, uncertain young woman
once knew.
My pride was immeasurable, but it came with an ache that wouldn’t subside. Every confident gesture, every measured word she now spoke had been forged through unspeakable hardship.
I couldn’t help but wince inwardly, remembering the tears she had shed in silence, the countless nights of do and fear she had endured alone.
You shouldn’t have had to suffer so much to become who you are. I looked at her with a pain in my heart.
She caught my gaze briefly and smiled. In that moment, my joy and sorrow merged into something profound: a reverence for the remarkable woman who had emerged from the crucible of pain, and a lingering wish that her path could have been gentler.
My girl, I hope you find happiness.
