Chapter 326
He’d been doing that more often since his brush with death–smiling as if he’d discovered something new about life. Part of me wanted to bask in the warmth of that smile, but Carter’s absence pressed on my mind.
“How are you feeling?” I asked, eyeing the way he carried himself.
“Recovering,” he answered simply.
Silence fell between us. Since Nathan had awakened, we’d spent plenty of time in the same space but rarely alone.
“Don’t push yourself too hard,” I said, then immediately regretted my words. “Sorry, I’m not trying to tell you what to do.’
“Thank you,” he assured me, his good mood apparently intact. “Gina said you had a question for me?”
“Ah, yes,” I said, studying his face. “You wouldn’t happen to know where Carter is, would you?”
I watched Nathan’s expression carefully. The bright smile dimmed, his face closing off slightly before he quickly recovered, adopting a casual air that seemed forced.
“Uh–no,” he said. “Why do you ask?”
Nathan and Carter had never gotten along well, their relationship strained by old wounds and new betrayals.
I’d hoped they might be rebuilding some trust, but perhaps the problem ran deeper than I realized.
“Just curious. It’s fine, I’ll find him” I said, shaking my head.
Better to avoid the topic if it was going to sour his mood.
I turned to leave, but Nathan caught my wrist. “Rachel!” His voice held an edge of hurt. “Don’t you trust me? If you did, why didn’t you tell me you sent Selena looking for Carter?”
“You know about that?” I asked, surprised.
He nodded. “Selena told me.”
“I just didn’t want to bother you with it,” I explained.
“It’s not a bother, Rachel. I can help.”
studied his face, suddenly uncertain. “So where is he, then?”
Nathan sighed. “Listen, Rachel… Carter left to find David, to see what he could do about him. He’s making sure David does help our enemies…”
My eyes widened. “What?! You know how dangerous that is!”
“Yes. I discussed it with him in detail a few days ago.”
“Nathan, you know how dangerous that is! Why would you send him there?” The words burst from me, harsh and accusatory. “I know you two don’t get along, but how could you put your own brother in that kind of danger?!”
Nathan stared at me, stunned. “I didn’t he began, then stopped. A bitter smile touched his lips as he shook his head. “You’re right. I’m sorry.
His sudden capitulation jarred me. Something cold washed over me, clearing the fog of exhaustion from my mind. My heart sank.

Chapter 326
What did I just say? What have I done?
“Nathan,” I said carefully, “was this your idea?”
He looked away, the bitter smile still in place. ‘It’s fine. You’re right. I didn’t stop him; it’s my fault.”
I couldn’t think straight, but I understood enough. Carter had proposed this plan himself. He had volunteered.
My pulse raced, panic rising in my chest.
“Nathan, I–I shouldn’t have accused you. I’m sor-”
He held up his hand, cutting me off. “It’s fine… I can’t blame you for thinking that. If I should blame anyone… I can only blame myself for doing things that would make you reach that conclusion. It’s okay, Rachel.”
His forced smile felt like a knife twisting in my heart. How could I have been so stupid? After everything he’d sacrificed, I’d assumed the worst of him–again.
“It’s not a big deal,” he said, but I could see I’d hurt him.
I almost wished he’d yell at me, challenge me, anything but this quiet acceptance.
“Excuse me,” he said, turning toward where Tyler, Apollo, and the others were gathered.
I watched him walk away, feeling colder with each step he took. I wanted to say more, but the words wouldn’t come.
“Hey,” Gina said, returning to my side. She touched my shoulder. “You look even paler now. You okay? Did Nathan know where Carter is?”
Icouldn’t muster the energy to explain. “Yes, I know where Carter is,” I said weakly. “Gina, I feel dizzy. I need to lie down.”
She helped me back to my tent, supporting my elbow. “Caspian and Jay say we can move out tomorrow. We’re ready.”
“Good…” I murmured.
