Chapter 331
Rachel’s POV
I hurried away from Nathan’s medical tent, my cheeks burning with embarrassment.
The crisp night air did nothing to cool the heat spreading across my face as his words echoed in my mind.
“You should go take care of those things.”
Of course he wanted me gone…
I bit my lip, trying to ignore the tightness in my chest as I recalled how his expression had changed when I touched his hand–the one bearing Madison’s ring.
That damn ring. The silver band gleamed in my memory, taunting me. He was wearing it again!
Why? As a reminder of her? As some twisted form of penance?
I closed my eyes, breathing deeply as I tried to get my emotions under control.
I was being ridiculous.
Nathan had nearly died today, and here I was, jealous over a piece of jewelry. I was the Queen of Nexus, for Moon’s sake, not some lovesick
teenager.
Yet a small voice inside me whispered. This is how Nathan must have felt when you ignored him as a wanderer. When you dismissed his feelings. When you rejected his advances.
That thought stopped me cold. The pain of rejection was a bitter pill, one I’d forced Nathan to swallow countless times before. Now I was tasting it myself, and it was every bit as awful as I’d feared.
“Need a hand with those bandages, Queen?”
I snapped out of my daze, realizing I’d been standing in the supply tent staring at a pile of gauze for who knows how long. A young warrior watched me with concerned eyes.
“I’ve got it, thank you,” I said, hastily gathering the supplies.
“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice gentle. “You seem… distracted.”
I forced a smile. “I’m fine. Just tired. It’s been a long day.”
с
He nodded, but his expression remained doubtful. “If you say so.”
As he left, I let my shoulders slump. I wasn’t fine. I couldn’t stop thinking about Nathan–his wounds, his distant manner, that ring.
What did it all mean? Did he feel guilty about what happened with Mateo? Was he keeping me at arm’s length to protect me? Or had his feelings simply changed?
If he ever had feelings at all…
The memory of my dream in the Moon Goddess temple flooded back, so vivid it made me shiver. Standing before Nathan, asking the question that had burned in my heart, “Did you ever love me?”
His response had been immediate, cutting. “No. Never.
Chapter 331
I shook my head, trying to dislodge the memory. It was just a dream, not reality.
But
Maybe I needed to stop pursuing Nathan. Stop making a fool of myself. Stop hoping for something that would never happen..
But even as I thought it, I knew I couldn’t. Despite everything, my heart still quickened at the sight of him.
My skin still tingled where he touched me. I was still drawn to him like a moth to flame.
Some Queen I was. The Luna of the pack, mooning over an Alpha who didn’t want her…
“Queen!”
I turned to see a warrior rushing toward me, his breath coming in quick gasps as he held out a folded piece of paper.
“From General Caspian,” he said, bowing slightly as I took the note.
I unfolded it quickly, scanning the contents:
Esteemed Queen,
For reasons unknown, Dylan’s forces have begun retreating from our territory. We are still confirming details, but I wanted to inform you immediately.
Respectfully,
Caspian
I read it twice, frowning. This didn’t make sense. Dylan wasn’t the type to retreat without reason.
“Tell General Caspian to send scouts to track Dylan’s main force,” I instructed the messenger. “This could be a feint or a redeployment. We need
to be sure.”
“Yes, Luna.” The warrior bowed again before jogging off.
“What’s that about?” Gina’s voice came from behind me. I turned to find her approaching, her expression curious.
“Dylan’s forces are retreating,” I said, handing her the note
