Rachel’s POV
Just then, Enzo arrived. The rich aroma of roasted chicken reached me before he appeared at the entrance of the tent, his arms laden with a wooden tray.
“My Luna, Enzo called cheerfully, “I’ve brought you some food. Roasted chicken, baked potatoes, and fresh blueberries I found growing by the
river.”
Nathan stood there, arms crossed over his broad chest, his gray eyes narrowed.
The expression on his face made me feel like I’d been caught doing something wrong, though I knew I hadn’t.
I don’t have feelings for Enzo, I thought to myself. He’s just a friend–an enthusiastic, overly devoted friend.
“My Luna, please take a moment to rest and eat,” Enzo continued, oblivious to Nathan’s presence or deliberately ignoring it. “Your health is paramount to your people, as you carry the burden of our freedom.”
Nathan’s frown deepened, his eyes narrowing further. I felt my cheeks warm with embarrassment. This was awkward.
I wished they would both leave so I could eat in peace.
“Rachel, you should eat, Nathan said, his voice low and controlled.
Enzo nodded vigorously. “Indeed, Your Majesty! Please enjoy your meal.” He turned to face Nathan fully. “I should call you my Queen now.”
He extended his hand toward Nathan. “It’s an honor to meet the former king of the wandering wolves, Alpha Nathan.*
Nathan didn’t take his hand. “Who are you?”
“I am the son of Alpha Magnus,” Enzo replied, undeterred. “I am the most devoted follower of Queen Rachel, the Silver Moon Queen. I would do anything for my queen.”
Nathan raised an eyebrow at me. I merely shrugged. I had grown accustomed to having Enzo around. He talked a lot, but he made Mateo laugh, and that counted for something.
Nathan’s face darkened further, a vein becoming visible on his forehead.
“Enzo, would you mind getting me some supplies?” I asked, desperate to defuse the situation. “Nathan, Tyler said he wanted to speak with you about something.”
“Of course, Your Majesty,” Enzo replied brightly, bowing deeply before exiting the tent.
“I’ll be back, Nathan said, turning to leave.
I exhaled with relief once both men were gone. Finally, I could eat in peace.
Over the next few days, Nathan basically ignored Enzo’s existence, while Enzo continued to follow me everywhere, even attending strategy meetings.
He usually sat quietly, listening, though occasionally he would offer an opinion.
Nathan would pretend not to hear, though sometimes I would implement Enzo’s suggestions when they were good.
The only time Enzo wasn’t with me was when I was feeding Mateo.
Chapter 337
On the fourth day after Nathan’s return, I was in my tent nursing Mateo when I heard raised voices outside.
‘I love Rachel, and I will marry her and declare her as mine,” Enzo proclaimed loudly.
I froze, my eyes widening as his words carried clearly through the canvas.
‘In time, I will make Rachel’s heart find mine,” Enzo continued confidently.
“You’re jealous, Alpha Nathan, because you don’t know how to express love and tenderness to her like I do. I know my love for Rachel is eternal, and I will prove to her that I am the better choice in giving her the love and attention she deserves.”
I strained to hear Nathan’s response, which was much quieter.
“Yeah, I really don’t think you will,” Nathan replied, his tone dismissive.
“Rachel doesn’t like that sort of thing.”
“Nonsense.”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about, kid,” Nathan said.
Another voice joined the conversation–Gina’s.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
“Nothing,” Nathan replied. “This guy is delusional.”
“Because he thinks he has a chance with Rachel?”
“You’re jealous and realizing I am now your competition!” Enzo declared triumphantly.
“Well, Enzo, why don’t you see if you can find something for Rachel to eat?” Gina suggested, clearly trying to get rid of him.
After a pause, I heard Gina speak again, her voice softer but still audible.
“You know, it’s time you told Rachel how you feel, bro.”
My heart skipped a beat. I felt guilty eavesdropping on their conversation, but Gina’s words c
“It’s time you learned to mind your own business,” Nathan replied gruffly.
“Stay out of it, Gina,” he added before I heard his footsteps retreating.
my attention like a fish on a hook.
I sat there, my mind racing. What did Nathan feel for me? He had told me in the temple that he would never love me…
