Nathan’s POV
The evening sun cast long shadows through the meeting room windows as Information, my fingers drumming absently against the polished oak table.
Joe
finished his report. I leaned back in my chair, taking in the
“The wanderers have been contained,” Joe stated confidently, sliding a detailed map across the table. We’ve strengthened observation posts and provided basic military training to civilians who’ve been harassed by wanderers. Casualties are down sixty percent since last month.
I nodded, pleased with the progress. The wanderers had been a persistent problem since the soldiers with nowhere to go. Some had turned to banditry, others to something worse.
ended–wolves without packs, many former
“Excellent work, Joe,” I said, studying the map. “These containment zones should hold through winter.”
Caelum, who’d been unusually focused during the meeting, cleared his throat and added, “David from Vortex Island has surrendered his military supplies as a show of loyalty to Queen Rachel. Three warships and enough ammunition to arm a small battalion.” His eyes gleamed with satisfaction. “He’s requesting a formal audience next month.”
My chest swelled with pride at the mention of Rachel. My Rachel. The woman who’d transformed from a shy, dependent individual to a queen who commanded respect across the territories!
My girl is really amazing! I thought, unable to suppress a smile. One year ago, she could barely look a stranger in the eye. Now nations bowed to her will.
Tyler stood, his chair scraping against the floor, signaling the end of our meeting. “All good news. Great. We’ll reconvene tomorrow to discuss the next steps for the eastern border situation.”
Gina, stay for a moment,” I said as everyone began gathering their papers, the rustle of documents filling the room.
Tyler and Gina exchanged a worried glance that didn’t escape my notice. Something was off about both of them today, but I couldn’t quite. place it. The way their hands had brushed when passing documents, the silent communication in their eyes.
Especially Gina and Tyler’s secret smiles when they thought no one was watching. Something had shifted between them.
Tyler hesitated before leaving the room, his hand lingering on the doorframe. “I’ll be in his voice oddly strained.
mand center if you need me, Alpha,” he said,
Gina fidgeted with her sleeve–a nervous habit I hadn’t seen since our early days. But with Rachel on my mind, I didn’t have the bandwidth to investigate whatever was happening between my two most trusted people.
The minute I wrap this up, I’m getting to the bottom of whatever is going on with those two.
Once everyone else had filed out, the heavy door closing with a solid thud, Gina approached my chair. Her usually confident stride seemed
hesitant.
“Nathan,” she said softly. “I can tell something’s bothering you… what’s happened? You’ve been distracted all day.”
I sighed, uncertain how to begin. This wasn’t like commanding troops or negotiating treaties. This was… personal.
I stammered, “I… I…” The words stuck in my throat like thorns.
Gina’s expression grew more concerned, her brow furrowing deeply. “I don’t like that look on your face, Nathan. Is it something bad? Have the scouts reported movement in the Dead Zone?”
“No, not bad,” I managed, running my fingers through my hair. “Nothing like that.”

Ty It Jason?” the pressed, leaning forward. Tras le violated the treaty again?
I hook my head, pushing away from the table to stand by the window. The setting sun bathed the courtyard below in golden light.. 114 dbs Rachel
Her eyes widened in alarm, and she grabbed my arm. “Rachel?! What’s wrong with her… I should go check on her! She was already turning toward the door, loyal to the end.
“Wait!” I caught her arm before she could bolt, my grip firm but gentle. ‘Not exactly her. She’s fine–more than fine. It’s just…
“Just what? Spit it out, Nathan!” Gina demanded, her patience clearly wearing thin. “You’re scaring me.”
I ran a hand through my hair, feeling ridiculous. The great Alpha, commander of the Northern Territories, reduced to a nervous schoolboy, 1 want to marry her, but I’m not sure how she feels about it. What do you think? Does she seem… happy with me?”
I added, my voice dropping lower, “Things were so much simpler when I could just issue commands. But I couldn’t order Rachel to marry me.” I gave a self–deprecating laugh. “Though God knows it would be easier than whatever this is.”
Gina froze, staring at me like I’d grown a second head. Her mouth opened, closed, then opened again.
What the hell is her problem? I thought irritably, turning back to the window.
Is it so strange that I want to marry the woman who means the world to me? Her reaction wasn’t exactly what I’d hoped for. I expected support, maybe even excitement, not this stunned silence.
“Bro, Gina sighed, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Allow me to explain what normal people do in this situation.”
I brushed her hand away, annoyed. “I know what people do. I’m not completely socially inept.”
“It’s called–proposing, you idiot!” she exclaimed, throwing her hands up. “You don’t ask me how she feels. You ask HER!”
I rolled my eyes. “Obviously. But I need to know if she’s ready. If she’ll say yes.” My voice softened despite myself. “I can’t lose her, Gina. Not after everything.”
Gina hesitated, suddenly looking like she was about to pass a kidney stone. Her face contorted, and she took a deep breath.
“What?” I demanded, narrowing my eyes. “You look constipated. Just tell me what you’re thinking.”

Her cheeks flushed bright red, and she squared her shoulders like she s preparing for battle. “I have something to tell you as well. Nathan… Tyler and I are together.”
My eyes widened. “What?!” The pieces suddenly clicked into place–the lingering glances, the “coincidental” patrol schedules, the way they always seemed to arrive at meetings together. “Are you serious?”
The door burst open with a bang, and Tyler charged in with Apollo close behind, both looking battle–ready, hands on their weapons. Apollo’s massive frame nearly filled the doorway, his eyes scanning for threats.
“Alpha, is everything alright?” Tyler asked urgently, eyes scanning the room for threats. “We heard raised voices.”
I glared at him, connecting the dots. The man I trusted with my life had been keeping secrets. Major secrets.
“What’s wrong?” Tyler asked, shifting uncomfortably under my stare, his hand slowly moving away from his weapon.
“I told him about us,” Gina explained, stepping closer to Tyler, her hand briefly touching his arm in a gesture that was unmistakably intimate,
Tyler’s face paled to the color of chalk. “Alpha… I… we-” he stammered, looking more terrified than I’d seen him before. “It just happened. We didn’t plan it.”
