Chapter 378
Rachel’s POV
Lately, I’d been on edge, my thoughts drifting to places I couldn’t quite pin down
Just a moment ago, in the flicket of torchlight near the market, I swore I saw Kael–those cold eyes locking onto mine before he vanished into the crowd.
Or maybe it was just my imagination, a ghost conjured by sleepless nights. I couldn’t shake it, though.
Something felt off, like a blade hovering just out of sight.
I turned my head, catching Victoria’s gaze. “I still think you should be careful,” I said, my voice low, almost swallowed by the evening hum. “He’s done nothing for you. Something about this doesn’t sit right.”
Victoria flashed me a quick grin, brushing it off with a casual, “Okay, okay.”
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. ‘Fine. But come with me to see someone now.”
The weight of my decision pressed down, but I needed answers, and this was the only way I could think to get them.
“Who?” she asked.
“You’ll see when we get there,” I replied.
We wound our way through the compound, the chatter of vendors fading as we neared the dungeon’s grim entrance.
The air grew colder, the scent of damp stone and despair creeping into my lungs.
Victoria slowed, her brows furrowing. “Why are we here?”
I didn’t break stride, my jaw tight. “To see Madison. I need to know how she’s holding up.”
Victoria’s face twisted with anger, her hands balling into fists. “That bitch? After what she did to Nathan? I oughta go slap her silly. She
deserves it.”
I shot her a sidelong glance but didn’t argue. We reached the guards, flashed our clearance, and stepped into the dim, echoing chamber.
The iron bars loomed ahead, and there she was–Madison, slumped against the wall, her body a map of bruises and cuts, her once–proud
demeanor reduced to a hollow shell.
Her eyes flicked up, narrowing with venom as she spotted us. “Well, look who’s here, you filthy bitches.”
Victoria bristled, stepping forward with fire in her voice. “You’re the filthy one, you piece of trash. Rotting in here’s what you deserve–karma for all the innocent blood on your hands.”
Madison’s lips curled into a cold, bitter smile. If you’re gonna kill me, just do it. Spare me the damn lecture.”
I crossed my arms, my gaze steady. “Still no remorse, huh? You know what a water cell is, don’t you?”
Her smirk faltered, her face paling as the words sank in. “You wouldn’t dare.
I leaned in, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “What wouldn’t I dare? I’m the highest authority here. Queen, if you wanna call it that. I fear nothing.”

The power in my title felt foreign on my tongue, but it carried weight, and I wielded it like a blade.
Victoria chimed in, her tone clinical but laced with disgust. “Water cells are brutal. The buoyancy and fight space force you to stand for hours. exhausting your body. The filthy, cold water soaks your wounds, inviting infection and rot. Psychologically, it’s worse–cut off from the world, no hope of release, trapped in darkness. It breaks you more than the physical pain ever could.”
I nodded, a slow, deliberate smile spreading across my face. ‘Sounds like a living hell, doesn’t it?”
Madison’s bravado cracked, her voice rising in panic. I’ve got a child in my belly!”
I tilted my head, unimpressed. “And?”
Her eyes widened, desperation creeping in. “Don’t hurt the innocent!”
I arched an eyebrow, letting the silence stretch. “Fine. Tell me where Kael is, and maybe I’ll consider it.‘
She hesitated, her gaze darting between me and Victoria, her lips trembling. I turned toward the guard post. “Guards-*
“No! Wait!” Madison’s scream cut through the air, raw and frantic. “I’ll tell you!”
I smirked, motioning for Victoria to sit with me on the bench just outside the cell. I leaned back, crossing my legs, and nodded at Madison. “Go
on.”
Her eyes burned with hatred, but her voice was shaky. “Kael didn’t come that night because he knew we were done for. He never left–just hid nearby. He slipped into Emerald City when the chaos hit.”
Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “What? He’s in the city?”
I kept my expression neutral, though my heart thudded harder. “That’s it? There’s more, isn’t there?”

Madison shook her head, tears welling up. “That’s all I know. I thought he loved me, but when he abandoned me to save himself, I realized all men are the same. Now, I just want to protect my baby. I don’t care about anyone else.”
All men are the same? I disagree because Nathan is different. He chose to die to save me.
I studied her, the shift in her demeanor tugging at something deep inside me. “And after the child’s born? What then?”
She wiped her eyes, her voice breaking. “I want to be a good mother. I want to leave this war behind, teach my kid to talk, watch them grow. I
Her words dissolved into sobs, her hands clutching her stomach as tears streamed down her face.
Victoria’s eyes glistened, a flicker of sympathy softening her features.
Madison kept going, her voice raw. “I used to be Luna, the shining one. Everyone adored me back then. But I chased a man who never loved me. I was so wrong…”
Victoria’s voice was thick with emotion. “You were/wrong, Madison. You shouldn’t have killed innocents.”
I sighed, rising to my feet. ‘Guards, get her some clean clothes and tend to her wounds.”
Madison stared at me, stunned, her tears pausing midstream. “Why are you doing this?”
I met her gaze, my voice steady. “Because I’m a mother too. I won’t take revenge while you’re pregnant. But after that kid’s born, I’ve got plenty of ways to deal with you.”
She choked out a shaky, “Thank you,” her head bowing slightly.
I turned to Victoria. “Come on, let’s go.”

I grabbed her hand, pulling her out of the cell, the clank of the door shutting behind us a final note to the encounter.
As I stepped outside, the night air washed over me, soothing away the suffocating feeling
Victoria hesitated, her voice uncertain. “Are you sure she doesn’t know more?
I shook my head, my mind racing. “Keel wouldn’t trust her with his exact moves. He doesn’t love her–never did.
Victoria fell silent, her steps slowing as we walked away.
I glanced at her, then ahead, my thoughts drifting back to that fleeting glimpse of Kael.
Was he really here, lurking in the shadows of that street?
