Chapter 6

“Do you understand?” the question hung in the air, heavy and sharp.

My love for puppies was so deep that I had even given up my annual vacation just to stay home and care for them. They weren’t just pets; they were woven into the very fabric of our lives, like family members who couldn’t be separated.

Isaac never meant to harm the puppy. His intention was simply to frighten me—to pull me back, to make me realize my mistakes and apologize. He and Alma had planned it together, a scheme meant only to scare me, nothing more.

But things took a sudden, unexpected turn. The puppy, out of nowhere, barked fiercely at Alma. Terrified, she burst into tears, sobbing that the puppy was going to bite her. Her cries were raw and uncontrollable.

“Anna must hate me so much… and since it’s her dog, it must hate me too,” she whimpered. “Isaac, I don’t want to stay here. I’m scared.”

Alma clung to him, trembling like a fragile porcelain doll, her tears soaking into his shirt. A wave of pity washed over him, and he murmured, “Then teach that animal a lesson.”

But what followed was far beyond what he had imagined. Alma didn’t just scare the puppy—she killed it.

He could still see my face in his mind: the burning anger in my eyes, the sharpness in my voice, the redness from tears. In that moment, I truly wanted to destroy him.

“Alma,” Isaac said, his voice suddenly heavy with exhaustion. “From now on, let’s have no contact.”

“When you’re discharged from the hospital this time, let’s never speak again.”

Then, as if waking from a daze, he added, “Alma, let’s just forget the past.”

But even as he spoke, he remembered the pain I had endured over the years. With a new resolve, he warned Alma, “But from now on, you’re not allowed to say a single bad word about my girlfriend. Not one.”

“Because she’s mine,” Isaac’s voice was low and serious, leaving no room for argument.

Alma’s sobs grew louder, her desperation spilling over. She clung to Isaac, refusing to let go. “Why?!” she cried out. “Why can Anna have your heart, but I can’t? Why?!”

Yes. Why?

Suddenly, Isaac’s mind flashed back to all the others who had once chased after me—so many more impressive, more accomplished than he was.

He wasn’t the best-looking or the most successful, yet somehow, he had been the one to win my heart. He was the one I chose.

Back when we first became a couple, someone else had challenged me in the same way.

“Why, Alma? Why did you pick Isaac? Why him and not me?” the voice had shouted, anger breaking through control.

“What makes Isaac worthy of you? His family? His looks? None of it stands out. His education and social circle don’t even compare to yours! So why is he the one with you?”

Each word struck at Isaac’s pride—the part of him that was most vulnerable and raw.

He worried that I might falter after hearing those cruel words, that I might join others in looking down on his humble background.

For a moment, he even thought about giving up.

But then, I grabbed his hand tightly.

His heart skipped a beat.

I met his gaze without hesitation, and with steady conviction, I said, “Because I like him.”

My voice was firm, piercing straight through to his heart. “As long as I like him, he’s the best and most precious person in the entire world.”

“Isn’t my simple ‘I like you’ enough?”

“To me, Isaac is the very best.”

From that day forward, whenever he asked if I ever regretted my choice, I always answered with unwavering certainty.

“Regret doesn’t exist in my world.”

“Isaac, I trust you won’t ever let me regret it.”
