Chapter 7

At that moment, when Alma repeated the very same words, he mimicked me perfectly, echoing each phrase exactly as I had said it.

“Just because I like her.”

Suddenly, it was as if a light flickered in his eyes—he finally grasped the depth of my feelings. His gaze grew moist, and his voice cracked with emotion.

“As long as I like her, she’s the most precious person on earth. Nothing can ever compare to the power of ‘I like you.’”

Looking earnestly at Alma, I added with quiet conviction, “As long as Anna is standing there, I will love her.”

But Alma, blunt and unyielding, shattered his fragile hope with cold truth.

“Isaac,” she said sharply, “Anna will never forgive you.”

“You’ll never have Anna’s true heart again.”

Then, pulling out her phone, Alma showed me our entire chat history—countless ambiguous voice messages exchanged between her and Isaac, all neatly compiled and sent to me.

She coldly declared, [Anna, as long as I’m here, you will always lose.]

[Anna, you lost again.]

[Anna, you’ve lost once more.]

Alma, on the verge of madness, then pulled up a video.

It was footage of me being rushed through the hospital corridor in an ambulance that day. She had witnessed it and recorded everything.

Turning to Isaac, she said, “Isaac, when Anna needed you the most, you weren’t there. What makes you think she would ever choose you again?”

“And if that’s not enough, you killed her dog. That alone is reason enough for her to hate you forever!”

Her laughter cut through the room like a knife, piercing Isaac’s heart mercilessly.

His mind flashed back to my resolute words: “It’s completely over between us.”

A sharp, agonizing pain exploded in his chest, so intense he nearly collapsed, screaming in anguish.

“Enough!” he roared.

Grabbing Alma roughly by the neck, he snarled, “This is all your fault!”

“You deliberately drove a wedge between me and Anna. You pushed her away on purpose. It’s because of you!”

“Alma, you asked for this.”

Desperately struggling against his grip, Alma fought back, slapping him fiercely. Her cries of mercy twisted into a furious, defiant tirade.

“You’re a pathetic loser nobody wants!”

“You lost the one person who loved you most. Ha! Serves you right!”

I cradled the puppy gently, dealing with the aftermath of what had happened.

The pet shop had messaged me, offering their apologies.

They said they never imagined that allowing Isaac to take the puppy would lead to its death. Had they known, they would have never let him have it.

I understood.

It wasn’t the fault of the pet shop staff.

Isaac insisted on taking the puppy; they had no authority to stop him.

I stared at the Polaroid pictures of the puppy and me—so full of life, nestled in my arms, its little tongue hanging out, as if it were still here with me.

Suddenly, tears streamed down my cheeks.

The grief surged through me, nearly overwhelming every fiber of my being.

I sat there, motionless, staring blankly at the new bed I had prepared for the puppy before the competition.

The pain was suffocating, unbearable.

I broke down completely, clutching the tiny bed tightly and screaming into the silence, “Why?!”

I just couldn’t understand.

Isaac had said he loved the puppy. He claimed he liked it, too.

How could he be so cruel, so heartless, to torture and kill a puppy that had been with him for three years—one he had called family?

After I blocked and deleted Isaac, finally severing all ties, he suddenly started acting like he cared about me again.

He showed up downstairs at my company—something he hadn’t done in ages.

Isaac, who had spent so much time with Alma, had barely been around me. So little that many new employees at the company didn’t even recognize him anymore, only jokingly asking me about him.

Conclusion

The chapter closes on a poignant note, capturing the raw intensity of shattered trust and the devastating consequences of fractured love. Through these moments, the story explores the fragile nature of relationships and the difficulty of reconciling love with heartbreak.

Despite the turmoil and bitterness, the chapter leaves a lingering sense of unresolved emotion—a testament to the complexity of human connections. Anna’s final act of severing ties with Isaac, even as he attempts to rekindle a semblance of care, reflects the painful yet necessary steps toward healing. The narrative gently reminds us that love, while powerful, can be both a source of light and a cause of deep darkness, and sometimes the hardest choices are those made to protect one’s own heart.
