Chapter 4

But Javier, I will never be your wife again. Not now, not ever.

And deep down, he would never realize that this was exactly what I wanted.

“You’re finally seeing reason,” he said, a small, satisfied smile curling his lips. “Don’t worry, I’ll marry you again.”

He pressed a long, lingering kiss to my forehead, a gesture that felt both tender and possessive.

The following day, I left the hospital earlier than expected, hoping to avoid any unnecessary encounters. But fate had other plans. In the dim, echoing underground parking lot, Milena suddenly appeared, blocking my path with an air of fierce entitlement.

She advanced toward me, her eyes blazing with the arrogance of a wife who believed she owned the world. “You cheap woman! We’re divorced, and yet you still let my man come pick you up?” she spat, raising her hand as if to slap me.

Before her palm could connect, I struck first—my slap sharp and deliberate. “Milena Sanders, open your eyes and see the truth. It was Javier who came to get me, and I refused him.”

Her face twisted in anger. “You only refused once. You’re just playing hard to get!”

She lunged again, but suddenly, a black dog darted from the shadows, knocking her to the ground. She landed hard but thankfully escaped with no serious injuries.

Just then, Javier arrived, his expression darkening as he took in the scene. His glare burned into me, as if I had somehow sent the dog to attack his precious wife.

Milena, tears streaming down her cheeks, threw herself into his arms. “Javier, you don’t really love me at all.”

“I do. I love you,” he said, voice low but earnest. “More than anything.”

“If you loved me,” she sobbed, “you wouldn’t let Saina hurt me over and over. If you loved me, you’d send those dogs to bite her, so she’d feel the pain I do!”

Javier’s face softened, but he quickly masked it. “Alright, alright. Please don’t cry. It hurts me to see you like this. Let me take you to the hospital first, okay?”

When she finally nodded, he immediately summoned his men.

“Send my—” He caught himself before saying “my wife,” wary of upsetting Milena.

Instead, he ordered, “Send Miss Lorraine to the stray dog shelter.”

Milena’s eyes gleamed with cruel satisfaction. “Put a hundred dogs in a cage with her!”

Javier’s tone was icy as he repeated the command. “Put a hundred dogs in a cage with her.”

After giving the order, his gaze hardened as he looked at me. “You’ve been disobedient. This will be your punishment.”

Without hesitation, he bound me to the back seat of the car, waiting for his men to arrive and take me away.

He drove off, cradling Milena in his arms, leaving me behind in the cold, empty parking lot.

I struggled against the restraints, desperation rising in my chest. Just as hopelessness threatened to consume me, my real parents appeared—they had just returned from abroad.

“My poor child,” my mother said softly, tears in her eyes. “Come home with us. We’ll take care of the Gayle family.”

Overwhelmed, I let the tears fall freely and nodded, climbing into their car without hesitation.

Half an hour later, Javier spoke quietly into his phone as he carried Milena. “Bring her back to the old house. Make some calming soup. She must be terrified.”

His men paled, sweat beading on their foreheads. “Sir, we… we left her in there for ten minutes. The dogs… they tore her apart. Only bones remain.”

The words hit Javier like a thunderbolt. He staggered back against the wall, clutching his chest as if his heart had been shattered. His breath came in ragged gasps, tears streaming down his face.

“I only told you to scare her,” he whispered hoarsely. “Who told you to actually throw her in there?”
