CHAPTER 0133
Meadow’s POV:
A full minute passed, my throat getting tighter and tighter with every second that went by.
Juniper had gone to see our father in prison, pretending to be me. And of course, my father wouldn’t have been able to tell us apart because of how long it had been, so she could have easily fooled him.
But it didn’t make any sense at all.
“What are you…” My jaw clenched. “What did you do, Juniper?”
“Nothing too bad, I promise. I just… made him hate you more than he already did.” She giggled, taking another sip of her drink.
I slammed my fists on the table as a red hot feeling surged from the bottom of my stomach to my chest. I could feel different eyes on us but I didn’t take my eyes
off my sister.
She was the reason my father reached out to me.
She had to be.
“Don’t get your panties in a bunch, sis. I’ll tell you.” Juniper smirked, her own eyes sparkling with amusement. “God, it’s so easy to pretend to be you. To be so soft and squishy and soft–spoken. You think your hot husband would know if you switched places with me? I mean, can you imagine going home to see Alaric balls deep inside me, calling me your name?”
I knew that wasn’t possible, but still, the image burned at the back of my mind. And it made my stomach twist, bile rising up my throat.
But the truth was that Alaric would instantly know that he was being deceived.
I’d proudly say it anywhere. Alaric knew me. And even better was the fact that he could feel only my touch, and not hers. Now that I thought about it, it would actually be hilarious to watch Juniper make a fool of herself.
“You’re not his type,” I said dismissively, taking a sip of my cocktail. Her face instantly fell and I knew
that
my words had gotten to her. “So I’m not exactly worried.”
She already saw it as a challenge. I could see the wheels turning in her head. She thought she could do it
without a doubt.
“Is that so?” she murmured. “Are you challenging me, sis? You know I’ll win. I always do.”
Laughter bubbled in my chest and I leaned in, interlacing my fingers on top of the table. And lowering my
voice, I said. “Try it, Juni. See if you win this time.”

Juniper’s eyes flashed. For a second, she didn’t speak, she just bit down on her bottom lip thoughtfully.” Whatever. Our father believed I was you. And you know what I told him?”
My jaw ticked. “What?”
“That I–you, I mean–killed our mother.”
My breathing turned shallow.
“What…” I breathed.
There was a victorious glint in her eyes. “And you know what I did after I practically rubbed it in his face? I walked out. Oh, I can still remember the way he called out for me, talking about how he’s going to kill you when he gets out-”
“He’s not getting out.” I cut in, trying to make my voice sound firm but it came out shaky instead.
Juniper tilted her head. “And how sure are you about that? From what I heard, he’s been appealing for his
release. His appeals always get denied though.”
I was one hundred percent sure that Alaric would never let him out. But Juniper telling him that I killed our mother wasn’t going to bode well for me either
“He’s not getting out, Juniper,” I repeated. “So whatever the hell you thought you were doing by-”
“All I hear is your yapping, Meadow.” Juniper scoffed. “You’re not even trying to deny it.”
“No use in denying what we both know is the truth,” I replied without a beat, although my throat had
gotten even tighter.
Drug overdose.
That’s what they called it. Heck–that’s what it was. My mother was so broken–hearted about my father’s arrest. She knew that he was never going to get out, and I suppose she didn’t want to live without him.
She was so pissed at everything. At me, as if it was my fault. And then she tried to do something that no
mother should ever do to their child.
And after she didn’t succeed, she took a bunch of pills and drowned herself in the tub.
None of this made sense as to why her killing herself would be my fault, but it was. The emergency
services said that if I had called them a minute earlier than I did, I would’ve been able to save her.
But that didn’t make me guilty.
What made me guilty was watching her swallow the pills, when I knew it was dangerous. I had peeped into the bathroom that night, saw her take the pills and toss the can onto the floor.
I knew it was wrong. I was twelve, and they had taught us about abuse in school. But I didn’t stop her.

And when the police officers asked me what I knew, I told them I saw her taking it but I didn’t know what it meant. I feigned ignorance. And Juniper overheard me and instantly knew I was telling lies.
That was the moment her hatred for me grew a thousand times more.
Right now, she was looking at me with so much hatred. If we weren’t already twins, people would think she was just a stranger who hated me for no reason at all.
But she was my sister. And she hated me because I could’ve saved our mother and refused to.
“How does it feel?” she muttered. “How do you even sleep at night knowing that you could’ve saved her?”
My gaze narrowed. “Same way you sleep at night after doing terrible things to me,” I shot back. “You don’t really think you’re a better person than I am, do you?”
“Well, why don’t you go to our father and ask him that question?” She said, smirking. “God, you should’ve seen the look on his face. He looked about ready to strangle me to death.”
I swallowed, feeling the hair at the back of my neck stand at attention. My father already hated me.
But this news…
“How could you do that?” My voice shook. “Do you have any idea what he would do to me if he gets out?”
Juniper’s gaze narrowed. “I thought you said he isn’t getting out?”
I didn’t respond. I took my hand away from the table, hiding my shaky fists under it, but it was too late.
She had already seen them.
“He won’t get out,” I said slowly. I was going to make sure of it. “And I hope you know that you’ve just
made a grave mistake, Juniper. A mistake that will NEVER bring that bitch back from the dead.”
I didn’t even think she would, especially not in public, but Juniper shocked me–she jumped to her feet and swung her hand toward my face.
Luckily, I was fast enough to catch it.
I was sick and tired of letting her get what she wanted all because I felt guilty.
And I was fucking angry. I didn’t even realize how hard I was twisting her hand until she cried out loud
enough for the restaurant goers to turn and stare. “Let me go, you bitch!” she screamed. “Help! She’s hurting me!”
I immediately dropped her hand like it had burned me.
“My grip wasn’t even that hard, fucking drama queen.”
I could see a waiter approaching us as Juniper chuckled, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
Whatever the case is, I just hope that for your sake… he does get out. About time someone took over from

me, don’t you think?”
“Is there a problem here?” The man asked. Shooting a glare at Juniper, I snatched my purse from the table and rose to my feet. “No. I was just leaving.”
I stormed out of that restaurant with one thing on my mind.
I was going to Alaric’s office. And I would do anything. ANYTHING, to make sure my father would never be released from prison.
