DREW’S POV

The night air was sharp against my bare skin as I stood in the woods. I was grunting. My claws twitched, ready for another fight.
The two rogues circled me like they were vultures. They looked just as sick as the one before. I knew I could take them in my human form. They stalked forward, teeth bared, muscles coiled for the kill. I braced myself.
Then they saw the body.
One sniffed the air. The other growled low, then threw his head back and howled. I knew that howl. It was the same one I’d let out when my mother died. They exchanged a look and then they ran away.
I didn’t wait around to see if they’d bring reinforcements. I dropped to all fours, shifted in a blink, and Remus took over. My paws hit the earth hard as we tore through the trees, faster than sound, faster than thought.
The estate came into view. I could see the lights and the back door.
I was running too fast that when Remus slammed the brakes, he skidded to a halt inches from the door. We huffed, snorted, and shook out our fur.
Then the Alpha’s voice pierced the air.
“Take her to the infirmary and let the nurses look over her.”
I could feel his energy slithering through my mind.
‘Use the balcony. You can’t come in this way‘
I snarled.
Remus didn’t like being ordered around, but we both knew better than to argue with Father. We scaled the stone wall. Our claws dug into the rock and our muscles burned, but we made it. I slipped over the railing and padded into our room.
I shifted back mid–step, breathless and sweating.
The door burst open and my father was on me in a blur.
His hand locked around my throat and slammed me against the wall.
“What the fuck happened out there?” he barked. His eyes glowed like coals, and his voice rumbled like
thunder.
I gasped as I tried to pry his fingers loose.
“A rogue… attacked me,” I rasped. “I killed it. Was dragging the body when… Becca saw me. She ran. I would’ve gone after her if two more hadn’t shown up.”

“Are you a fool?” he hissed. “You let a human see you? Do you know what that means? Do you understand what’s at stake?” His lip twitched. “It could cost Becca her life, or ours.”
“She didn’t know it was me,” I snapped. “Or at least I think so.”
“She came home hysterical. Said she saw a ghost, but I sensed she was lying. I knew she saw something out there. Now I know the truth. It was you in wolf form.”
“Father, I’m sorry.”
“I don’t need your apology. I just need you to be careful.” His eyes darkened.
“Bet you told Hilary.”
“That’s different and you know it. Hilary’s my mate. I am obligated to tell her everything.”
“I bet you told her after you married her and moved her here,” I laughed. “I bet she’s terrified of you now.”
The air changed.
I didn’t see the hit coming. He shoved me so hard I hit the floor and slid a foot across the carpet.
He didn’t apologize. Of course not.
“I will not have this conversation with you again. Next time you have a slip up like this, you know what your punishment will be.” He turned toward the door. “Walter will clean up the mess.” He paused and then looked over his shoulder. “And next time you fuck the beta’s daughter, at least wash her scent off before parading through the halls smelling like her cunt. I can’t have the beta killing my only heir.”
Then he was gone.
Remus stirred inside me, furious.
‘He had no right to treat us like that. It wasn’t our fault she saw us,‘ Remus growled.
‘Father doesn’t care about that. All he cares about is power.‘
‘You need to check on Becca. Learn what she saw.‘
‘I don’t think that’s such a good idea!’
‘Why? She might tell you what she saw.
‘She won’t, I closed my eyes. ‘She’s a human. She shouldn’t even be here.
Remus growled low. ‘You’re scared.’
‘I’m tired. I need a shower.’

I stalked to the bathroom and turned the water on hot. I stood beneath it and let it scald the blood and dirt from my skin. My shoulders ached. My ribs were bruised. But the part that hurt the most was something I couldn’t wash off.
Becca’s eyes when she saw me. She looked like she’d seen a monster. Maybe she had.
I wrapped a towel around my waist and fell into bed, staring at the ceiling. The wind howled outside. My body screamed for sleep. But my mind? It stayed awake.
Remus whispered again. ‘You should go to her.
‘Shut up.‘
I lay staring at the ceiling, the sheets twisted around my legs like restraints. I couldn’t sleep. Not when my mind or wolf wouldn’t shut the hell up.
‘Go to her,‘ Remus murmured.
‘You’re getting more annoying by the day, I exhaled through my nose. I dragged myself out of bed, and stalked into the hallway. I was barefoot and shirtless. The castle was silent. Good, I didn’t feel like running into anyone right now.
My feet knew where I was going before I did. Becca’s door.
I stared at it for a second too long, hand halfway raised.
“This is stupid,” I muttered under my breath.
I turned to walk away when my ears perked. I heard a clicking sound and the door creaked open behind me.
Every hair on my arms rose. I spun around and there she was. Standing in the doorway like some kind of ghost. She wasn’t wearing her glasses and her hair was shoved up in a messy bun, a few strands falling across her cheek. She was wearing an oversized green pajama shirt that hung off one shoulder. The bottom fell over her knees.
“Hello Becca,” I greeted. My voice must have did something to her because she gasped, staring at every spot on the wall behind me. Her green eyes refused to look at my chest or into my eyes.
“Drew?” she whispered. “What are you doing here?”
She wrapped her arms around herself like she was cold. Or hiding. But what else was left for her to hide? That hideous green monstrosity was already hiding everything except her feet.
‘She knows something, Remus growled in the back of my mind.
“I heard what happened,” I said. “I came to check on you.”
Her eyes found my eyes now. “Really? Because earlier you made it pretty damn clear we were nothing.”

I opened my mouth to respond, but then I heard voices coming from the far end of the hallway.
My nose flared and I detected an omega scent, then Beta Walter’s.
I focused my hearing.
“Are you sure you can get the blood out of the dirt?” Walter asked.
“Yes, Beta.”
Shit.
The footsteps were getting closer.
“Get inside,” I muttered, pushing her gently into the room and shutting the door behind us.
