Back at the villa, Alice collapsed into Kenneth’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
“Kenny, how could she do that to Chris… He didn’t even get a chance to open his eyes and see the world. I risked everything to bring him into this life!”
Kenneth rubbed his brow in exhaustion.
He couldn’t deny that when he first learned Alice was pregnant with his child, he’d felt a surge of excitement.
But before he’d even had a chance to enjoy being a father, the child was gone…
He wrapped his arms around Alice, trying to comfort her. “We’re still young. There’s time. We’ll have more children.”
“Kenny, you’re all I have left now. Chris can’t have died for nothing! You have to give me a place in your life, give our lost child some justice! Christina is a murderer–either you divorce her right now, or I’ll go to the police and report her for murder!”
Gone was Alice’s usual softness; her cold determination made Kenneth bristle with irritation.
He’d always hated being pressured by anyone. He’d stayed with Alice so long because she was gentle and considerate.
In every aspect–life, intimacy–she endured everything, never forcing him to show the darker, crazier side he kept hidden from Christina.
But now, against his will, Christina’s pale, stubborn face flashed through his mind, her voice raw and defiant, “It wasn’t me.”
He felt restless and uneasy.
“It’s not the right time,” he said.
He tried to pull away, but Alice clung to him even tighter.
“Kenny, I gave birth to your child with no name, no status, and now Chris is dead because of Christina. Are you really not going to make this right?”
Every time Alice pressed him, a strange frustration welled

Chapter 9
Abruptly, he stood and freed himself from her embrace. But when he met her tear–streaked, wounded face, his heart softened again.
Kenneth stroked her hair. “You’re upset right now. Take a couple of days to calm down. This isn’t the time.”
Alone in his study, he noticed the photo of him and Christina on the desk–knocked over, probably during one of his wild nights with Alice.
He picked up the picture, tracing the faded image of their younger selves, snapped by a classmate back in high school.
He closed his eyes, and the memory came rushing back.
He’d just won a basketball championship, and she’d shoved him away in mock annoyance.
He’d insisted on pulling her close for a picture, telling his friends, “I want to frame the prettiest president and keep her forever.”
Christina had always been gentle, never one to stir up trouble.
Before they married, she’d told him that if he ever fell out of love, she’d walk away without hesitation. She despised underhanded tricks more than anything.
Unable to have children herself, she cherished kids more than anyone.
“Could someone so kind really have killed Chris?
‘Was it possible Alice, overwhelmed by grief, mistook a tragedy for something Christina had done?”
Once the thought took root, it spread through him like wildfire.
Almost against his own will, Kenneth found himself driving back to the abbey.
After the storm, the air was crisp and cold; the steps had already been swept clean. He searched every corner of the chapel, but there was no sign of Christina.
A powerful sense of dread gripped his chest.
Panicked, he rushed to the abbot and asked, “The woman who was kneeling here yesterday–did you see her?”
The abbot studied him for a long moment before replying quietly, “That lady collapsed from a high fever yesterday. Fortunately, a gentleman arrived just in time and took her away.”
