Chapter 7
Nathan stared ahead and watched as his teammates went down one by one.
In the end, with backup, Jaxton was shot dead on the spot, and Gemma was arrested alive.
Meanwhile, Lawrence was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
That night, Nathan interrogated Gemma himself. “Who are you? Why’d you kill Rosie?”
In the face of his questioning, she smirked and stayed silent, refusing to say a word.
Nathan furiously slammed the table and yelled, “Don’t think keeping quiet means I can’t find out the truth!”
Moments later, a cop brought in her file.
404
“Your real name’s Lena Crowe, and your father’s Alistair Crowe? You’re the daughter of the man my dad shot during that robbery?”
He stared at her, stunned.
Gemma let out a soft, mocking laugh. “That’s right. Thanks for taking care of me all these years, I guess.
“To see you abandon your sister for me, I’m sure my dad will be proud if he’s watching me.”
Nathan looked like he still couldn’t believe it. “So, you got close to me on purpose?”
Her soft laugh escalated into manic cackles. “Of course, and you made it so easy. All I had to do was crook a finger, and you’d
come running toward me.”
“Are you saying that I invited the disaster and got Rosie killed myself?” He lunged at Gemme in fury, only to be hauled back by several cops.
Gemma met his eyes and spat in a steady, cruel voice, “Not just that. Did you forget how you spent years targeting Rosanne for my sake? That was so fun.
“It was worth Jaxton and me waiting every minute for this to finally avenge Dad.”
“I’ll kill you! Your whole family deserves to die!” Nathan shouted, only to be dragged out of the interrogation room, while Gemma’s hysterical, triumphant laugh echoed behind him.
With solid evidence, the cops filed charges quickly.
Two months later, the court sentenced Gemma to death for murder and illegal possesion of firearms. Execution was
immediate.
That case sent shockwaves through the internet.
“Gosh, that’s terrifying ”
“Sure enough, murdering runs in the blood.”
“Poor child, she didn’t deserve any of that.”
Thanks to timely treatment, Lawrence survived and slowly recovered.
On the day the verdict came in, Nathan buried me next to our parents. Then, he knelt at the gravestone and silently repented with his head bowed.
“Mom, Dad, I’m sorry I failed to protect Rosie. I spent so many years blinded by hate and trusted the wrong person, and now I’ve gotten Rosie killed.
“Please wait a little longer, and I’ll come to apologize in person.

“Rosie, you’re not alone anymore, are you? Did you find them and tattle on me? This is my fault. I’ve failed you.
“Just wait a little longer, and I’ll apologize properly, alright?”
I looked down at my fading body and could feel that my time here was up.
Watching Nathan cry helplessly in front of the graves, I finally let go.
“Nathan, I forgive you now. We just weren’t meant to walk this life together long, and no one’s to blame. It’s just a shame we
didn’t get to see a future.
“Still… if there’s a next life, I’ll still pick you as my older brother. But if you mess up like this again, I swear I’ll never forgive
you.”
This time, my soul didn’t follow him around. I smiled as I watched him walk away.
“Be happy, Nathan. Live for me, and for Mom and Dad, too.”
This time, I’d rest here, right where I found peace.
After leaving the graveyard, Nathan visited Lawrence at the hospital. “Lawrence, if it weren’t for you that day, I’d be dead, too.”
Lawrence sighed. “I had a feeling something was off. Good thing I planted a tracker on you, or we wouldn’t have found you in
time.
“Still, none of this was your fault. No one would have guessed what those siblings had planned.”
Nathan looked down and murmured, “Regardless, I led Rosie to her death, and I can’t forgive myself for that.”
“Don’t say that. If Rosie could see you, she wouldn’t want to see you like this. This is something your dad and I overlooked,
and a danger unknowingly passed down to you both,” Lawrence said reassuringly.
All Nathan could do was nod.
Soon after, he submitted his resignation, and no one knew where he went.
When Lawrence learned about the news, he sensed something was wrong and rushed to the graveyard, only to find Nathan
there.
But he was a step too late. Nathan had swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills and collapsed between me and our parents‘
graves.
Lawrence’s tears finally fell as he murmured, “Roland, I failed them… I should’ve done better to take care of your children.”
In the end, he buried Nathan beside me and our parents.
“Rosie, don’t hold it against Nathan anymore. I’m sure he’s left to apologize.”
As the sun set, Nathan and I held hands as we bid farewell to Lawrence.
This time, we were never parting again.
