Chapter 14
The dinner party began, and Kenyon and Thelma, as the newlyweds, made a round of toasts.
Soon, it was the turn of the group where Marlene was seated.
Thelma had noticed early on that ever since Marlene appeared, Kenyon’s gaze had been fixed on her.
So Thelma spoke up first, “It seems Ken really is a good boss. Marlene even came all the way here to congratulate him after leaving the company.”
Marlene stood up, showing a professional smile. “Mr. Burt is a good boss, Ms. Glyn. Congratulations to you and Mr. Burt, I wish you a lifetime of happiness together.”
As she spoke, Marlene raised her glass, the crimson liquid sliding down her throat in one swift motion.
“Marlene, is this your boyfriend? How long have you been together? When the good news comes, remember to let me and Ken know. We’ll definitely get you a wonderful gift.”
There were quite a few people at the table who knew Marlene, and some who knew Alaric as well. They all chimed in, saying how well–matched the two were.
“A talented man and a beautiful woman, both tall and good–looking. Their children will surely be beautiful too. The more I look, the more perfect they seem together.”
“Marlene, you and Alaric are the same age, right? Isn’t that a coincidence?

It must mean you two are destined for each other.”
“How long have you been together? You’re not getting any younger, maybe it’s time to settle down.”

Everyone present was laughing heartily, except for Kenyon, whose gaze was dark and frightening.
The next second, Kenyon slammed his glass down and grabbed Marlene’s wrist, dragging her away. “Come with me.”
This scene drew everyone’s attention. Marlene struggled all the way, but Kenyon’s strength was intimidating. “Kenyon, you’re hurting me! Let go! Let go!”
Marlene stumbled along, then was pulled by Kenyon and thrown directly
into the car.
Before she could get up, his tall figure pressed down on her. Kenyon gripped Marlene’s chin, his tone unable to hide his anger. “Break up with him!”
Compared to Kenyon’s fury, Marlene was remarkably calm. She smiled, “Mr. Burt, if I remember correctly, today is your wedding day. You left your bride to drag your former secretary around?”
“Kenyon, it’s been over between us for a long time. I’m neither your bed partner nor your secretary now. What right do you have to order me around?”
Watching the anger in Kenyon’s eyes build and surge, Marlene’s lips curled into a cold smile.
“Kenyon, you’re married now, yet you’re still entangled with me. It only makes you look pathetic.”
Kenyon gritted his teeth, his gaze sinister. He stared at Marlene’s moving

lips, and only one thought remained in his mind: to silence her.
He ruthlessly stole all her breath. Faced with his out–of–control kiss, Marlene kept pounding him with all her strength.
Only then did he realize that he had thought he would be the one in control of this relationship, but the truth proved him wrong.
Marlene was far more ruthless and resolute than he had imagined.

A phone rang nearby, interrupting the rough kiss. Kenyon picked up the phone, and Marlene saw the name on the screen.
Thelma.
“Kenyon, you need to come back right now. You’d better give me an explanation for what happened today!”
The sound of the call reached Marlene’s ears as well. She wiped the red moisture from the corner of her mouth, her lips curling into a cold smile. “Mr. Burt, your wife is looking for you.”
Kenyon pressed his thin lips together, his jaw tense like a drawn blade.
He stared intently at Marlene, realizing that she had seen through all the baseness in his heart.
And he could only be such a base man. Three seconds later, Kenyon got out of the car, slamming the door with a loud bang.
Marlene watched Kenyon’s figure disappear at the hotel entrance. She got out of the car and habitually reached into her pocket for a cigarette.
But before she could take a puff, the cigarette between her fingers was taken away by a hand. “Smoke less, it’s bad for your health.”
Marlene looked at Alaric beside her, unsure how much he had seen.

With a delicate smile on her red lips, Marlene glanced at Alaric and hooked her finger. “Do you know how to kiss?”
“What?”
Before Alaric could react, Marlene had already wrapped her arms around
his neck and kissed him.
Amidst the sounds of intimacy, Marlene caught sight of Kenyon not far away, still lingering. She kissed Alaric even more fiercely.
