Chapter 16
Kenyon was willing to go through fire and water for love, enduring ninety–nine lashes without hesitation, just to break off the engagement with the Glyn family–a piece of news that soon reached the ears of his friends.
Fredrick Hirst came to the hospital and saw Kenyon lying in the hospital bed. He could hardly believe that the always flirtatious and unfeeling Kenyon would one day do something so devoted.
“Are you serious this time?” Fredrick smiled, unable to help but marvel at the power of love. “Is it that little secretary?”
Kenyon’s silence served as his answer.
At first, he had thought Marlene was just an insignificant secretary, but later, reality proved him wrong.
“Oh dear,” Fredrick sighed, taking his phone out of his pocket. “But Kenyon, no matter how deep your feelings are, Marlene doesn’t want you anymore.”
Kenyon’s right eyelid twitched uncontrollably, and he happened to see the photo Fredrick was showing him.
In the photo, Marlene and Alaric were together, both wearing funny headgear at an amusement park, laughing heartily.
Kenyon almost snatched the phone away, staring intently at the screen as if he could burn a hole through it.
There were nine photos, each one featuring Marlene, each one showing her smiling–a smile she had never shown when she was with him.

He obsessively and self–destructively looked through them again and again, until Fredrick snatched the phone back. “Hey, hey, hey, you’re going to break my phone!”
Fredrick wiped the phone screen. “I’m just saying, Ken, let it go. Marlene moved on a long time ago and started a new life. Isn’t what you’re doing now just wishful thinking?”
Fredrick knew all about their relationship. He had even once joked with Kenyon, asking if he would feel reluctant if it suddenly ended one day. Fredrick only remembered Kenyon’s flirtatious and indifferent smile at the time: “How could I? She’s just a secretary. What’s the difference who I sleep with?”
But reality proved that Kenyon had truly fallen for her. In this relationship, whoever fell in love first was destined to lose.
Kenyon grabbed Fredrick’s wrist, the corners of his eyes tinged red. “You have Marlene’s contact, don’t you? Call her. There’s no way she’s with Alaric.”
Kenyon must have really lost his mind, snatching Fredrick’s phone and preparing to call her.
Fredrick wasn’t even that close to Marlene. If the call actually went through, what was he supposed to say?
“Give it back, Kenyon! What’s the point of asking her now? Even if you know the answer, what difference does it make?!”
Beep beep-
The phone rang twice and then connected.
“Hello.”
Hearing Marlene’s voice, Kenyon panicked and shoved the phone into

Fredrick knew he was holding a hot potato. He cursed Kenyon a few times but had no choice but to answer the call.
“Hello, Marlene, you went to the amusement park today, right? Was it fun? My little niece has been pestering me about it lately. By the way, is the person in the photo with you your boyfriend? Do couple tickets for kids get any discounts?”
Fredrick kept slapping his own mouth, his words completely incoherent. He didn’t even know what he was saying.
There was a two–second silence on the other end, then a voice replied, “Yeah, it was pretty fun. Couple tickets only have discounts for certain rides like the Ferris wheel. Children’s tickets are mostly discounted.”
And the photo of Marlene and Alaric together had been taken on the Ferris wheel.
After hearing the answer, Kenyon seemed to lose his soul in an instant, the light in his eyes extinguished.
Fredrick hurriedly pretended to say a few more words, then quickly hung up. “There, are you happy now?”
Kenyon fell silent at once, his eyes full of desolation, with only one thought in his mind.
They’re really together. How could they be together?
Fredrick patted Kenyon on the back. “Kenyon, be mature. Look ahead.”
But reality proved that Kenyon was not a mature person.
That night, Kenyon ignored the doctor’s advice and left the hospital, getting hopelessly drunk at a bar.

In a haze, he stared at the only photo left on his phone, raising his hand to caress Marlene’s face again and again. “Marlene, I regret it. I really regret
it so much.”
Relying on the last bit of willpower, Kenyon made it home. The house was pitch dark, and he stumbled around before collapsing onto the sofa.
He hadn’t been lying down long before his head started throbbing painfully. Instinctively, he searched for some hangover pills, but no matter how much he rummaged, he couldn’t find any.
In his dazed state, he dialed a number saved in his phone that he had never dared to call.
“Hello, where are the hangover pills?”
There was a long silence on the other end, then a familiar voice came through.
“There are no hangover pills. The honey is on the left side of the third shelf in the fridge. There’s a hangover cure I made earlier in the second layer of the freezer. Just heat it up and drink it.”
Marlene’s familiar voice came through the phone, and Kenyon’s drunkenness vanished in an instant.
“Kenyon, I’ve already resigned. I’m not your secretary anymore. Please don’t call me again.”
