Chapter 12

The staff member guarding the morgue was an elderly man who had worked at the hospital for many years. Having experienced much in his life, he had volunteered to take care of the morgue

Who are you here to see; and from which day?”

The old man pulled up the records and waited for the man to speak

Two days agoadmitted after a car accident, unsuccessful resuscitationthe cancer patient.”

Zachary had no idea how those words came out of his mouth. He had rehearsed them countless times in his mind, yet when he finally spoke, his words were still stammered and broken

Her, yes, poor soul. She’s been here for two days and no one has come to claim the body. We contacted the police to check her household registration, but there’s no one left in her family, just her. Latestage cancer, fate always seems to pick on the unfortunate. She was only expected to live a short while, and then the car accident happened. On the day of the accident, the hospital didn’t have enough blood; I heard it was all taken by a CEO for his fiancée. Such a hard life”

The old man was getting on in years, and not many people came here. So when someone did, he couldn’t help but ramble a bit

Found her. She’s in locker B5 in room 008. I’ll take you there.”

After speaking, he led Zachary to room 008. Once there, he took the key for locker B5 from a nail behind the door, unlocked the cabinet, opened it, and then stepped outside

Chapter 12

Having seen so much, he knew that people viewing a body often lost control. Giving the family some space had become his habit

Zachary slowly approached the freezer, his steps unsteady

As the freezer door was slowly opened, a wave of icy air rushed out, making him shiver involuntarily

What met his eyes was Jasmine lying quietly inside, a thin layer of frost covering her body, her face pale as paper

His eyes widened instantly, filled with disbelief, as if time itself had frozen at that moment

His mouth opened slightly, wanting to say something, but no sound came

out

Instinctively, his hands gripped the edge of the freezer, his knuckles turning white from the force

His mind was blank, unable to comprehend what he was seeing. He just stared at Jasmine, as if by looking long enough, she would up and greet him with a smile

Zachary even wondered if he was dreaming. He blinked hard, but the scene before him remained unchanged

As time passed, the disbelief on Zachary’s face was gradually replaced by pain

His eyes began to redden, tears welling up, back, unwilling to accept this cruel reality

ut he forced himself to hold

He reached out with a trembling hand, wanting to touch Jasmine’s face, but stopped just short, afraid that the touch would make the scene even more real

Chapter 12

Suddenly, as if struck by something, his legs gave way and he collapsed to his knees in front of the freezer

He could no longer hold back his tears; they burst forth, streaming down his cheeks

He let out a heartwrenching scream, a sound that seemed to pierce through the entire room

He clutched his head with both hands, his body shaking violently as grief surged out of him like a flood breaking through a dam

He began to sob uncontrollably, his cries filled with regret, pain, and longing

He blamed himself for not giving up his blood to save Jasmine, who had lost too much in the accident, and for not noticing Jasmine’s condition sooner, causing her to suffer so much in her final days

His anxious heart was completely shattered

Jasmine really was in the late stages of cancer. The cancer patient from the car accident was Jasmine. Jasmine was truly gone

Every sob felt like a sharp blade, stabbing into his heart

He curled up tightly in front of the freezer, as if that could bring him closer to Jasmine. Time stretched endlessly in his grief

Nicole, waiting for Zachary in the topfloor VIP ward, had been waiting for ages, and hadn’t even received a single message

She couldn’t help but worry, so she kept calling Zachary over and over

The phone in his pocket kept ringing, but Zachary seemed not to hear it. He just knelt dazedly by the freezer, sobbing, lost in a pit of despair and

oblivious to the outside world

Chapter 12

The old man still waiting at the door heard the phone ringing endlessly inside and, seeing no one answer, peeked in. Seeing the man’s grief, he sighed and offered a reminder

The departed are gone. My condolences. You should answer your phone. Those who are still alive must live well.”

Live wellhow could he possibly live well, when he had personally destroyed the last chance for the person he loved most to survive

He took out his phone and saw Nicole’s call. He didn’t know what he was thinking; he just stared at the screen until the ringing stopped, and only answered when it rang again

Zachary, what’s going on? It’s so late and you still haven’t come, and you haven’t sent a single message all day.”

Nicole’s voice came through the phone, a little spoiled and clearly annoyed at being stood up

Something unexpected happened here. I won’t be coming over for the next few days, I’ll find you when it’s all over

He hung up before the other person could

say anything else

Nicole, staring at the disconnected call, angrily threw what she was holding against the wall
