Chapter 16
Evelyn thought, ‘Since Adrian wants to humiliate me like this, I’ve got no reason to keep their dignity. This marriage could’ve ended clean, but he and Clarissa took me as a doormat. They really picked the wrong
target.‘
Helena: [This is the Evie I love. Full of fire. I’m picking you up for hair style and makeup tomorrow. We’re gonna blind that cheating pair.]
Evelyn: [Sounds good.]
With that settled, Evelyn dove into work. Her colleagues were buzzing with curiosity about her, and everyone was friendly, especially Joey, who basically took the lead.
Evelyn had always preferred running her own studio to avoid office drama, but this first day in corporate life didn’t feel bad at all.
One of them asked, “Evelyn, is it true those wildlife clips were all shot by you? Weren’t you scared?”
Some people couldn’t even handle cats and dogs, let alone get up close to wild predators.
Humans were no match for the speed of a beast. Once they were spotted, there would be no escape.
Just imagining it made them shiver.
“No matter how brutal wild animals are, they’re nothing compared to how cruel people can be. I guess I stuck with it because I loved it,” Evelyn said.
Her voice was calm, but something flickered in her eyes–something bitter and far away.
Joey noticed it instantly and clapped her hands with a bright smile. “Alright, alright, enough with the interview. Evelyn’s one of us now. We’ve got plenty of time to hear about her wild adventures. Back to work, guys.”
Joey patted Evelyn on the shoulder like she was passing on a little strength.
The day flew by in peace. Evelyn had always worked on her own terms, so going nine–to–five in an office was a big shift. Still, wanting to blend in with the team, she gave it her all. The day left her tired, but it felt good.
When she got back to her building, she saw a group of older women sitting by the flowerbeds outside, chatting away. As she passed them, she caught bits of their whispers.
One of them whispered, “You heard that? That one is the homewrecker. Look at those eyes, pure trouble. I’d keep an eye on your husband if I were you.”
“She’s got no shame. What a bitch,” said another woman.
Someone else waved the air around her nose. “Ugh, no wonder I smelled something cheap and nasty.”

They didn’t stop whispering even when Evelyn walked past them.

Hearing those nasty words and baseless judgment, Evelyn tightened her grip on her bag. But she wouldn’t waste her breath trying to prove anything to them. It would only make her look hysterical, which was exactly
what Clarissa wanted.
‘I’ll remember this. I’ll get even. Just not on their terms,‘ she thought.
She kept walking into the building, straight–backed. Out of sight from everyone, right before the stairwell, she stopped and took a long, deep breath.
She already knew what kind of treatment she was in for from now on–side–eyes, whispers, slurs. It was only just the beginning.
She had just stepped into her apartment when a WhatsApp video call popped up on her screen.
Seeing it was from Adrian, she tossed her bag on the couch with a sigh. She’d blocked his number but had forgotten about WhatsApp.
She answered it without thinking, and Adrian’s pissed–off face filled the screen.
“You blocked my number? Where the hell are you? The nanny said you haven’t been home for days. What’s going on with you?” he snapped before she could say a word.
Evelyn let out a cold laugh, thinking, ‘He must’ve just gotten home. That’s the only reason he even noticed I was gone. If I’d dropped dead in that house, I probably would’ve rotted before he found it out.
