Chapter 20
Evelyn turned around and left without hesitation. The concern she’d felt for Noah disappeared the moment she saw Adrian and Clarissa shamelessly cozying up together.
She could do everything for someone she loved, and she could walk away just as easily.
She had always been the kind of person who knew when to hold on and when to let go. From now on, the only person she’d love was herself.

Back home, Evelyn showered and went to bed early.
But as evening fell, a noise at the door stirred her from sleep. Someone was messing with the keypad.
She sat up and walked toward the front door, guided only by the faint moonlight outside the window.
Peering through the peephole, she saw a burly man swaying on his feet, clearly drunk, mumbling to himself. “What’s the code again? 735… What’s the rest? Damn, stupid drinks messing with my head.”
A chill ran through Evelyn’s entire body. She was shocked to hear the man recite the password accurately.
Her heart started racing. Her hands were shaking so badly that she could barely keep still. She heard him start punching in numbers again and tiptoed toward the kitchen.
She grabbed a knife. But instead of going back to the bedroom, she slipped into the guest room, quietly locking the door from the inside. She pressed herself against the wall, knife in hand, her ears straining for any
sound.
With a click, the front door opened. Evelyn’s heart nearly jumped to her throat.
Thank goodness she’d gone back to the bedroom to grab her phone. Her hands were trembling so badly that she couldn’t even hold onto it. It slipped and fell to the floor. She held her breath, listening, terrified the guy might hear the noise.
“Shit! That bitch ain’t even home,” the drunk muttered angrily.
Evelyn swallowed hard, her throat dry. She didn’t dare call the police. Instead, she sent a message on WhatsApp: [Got an intruder. Help!]
She was shaking so much that she didn’t even check if the contact was Helena’s. She just hit send.
At the same time, Nathan was getting ready for bed when he saw the message pop up.
He immediately called the HR director and asked, “Find out where Evelyn lives now.”
The director didn’t dare waste a second. He pulled up the personnel files and searched for her address.

Nathan was already out the door, keys in hand, engine roaring to life.
The moment he got the address, he hung up and dialed emergency services.

After explaining the situation, he slammed his foot on the gas, speeding straight toward Evelyn’s place.
The street was quiet at midnight. His silver Maybach tore through the silence like a streak of lightning.

Inside the room, Evelyn curled up in the dark, knife clutched tight. She thought bitterly to herself, ‘A woman without a family is so pathetic. With no one to rely on, everything falls on them alone.‘
She hugged herself tightly, trembling all over as the sound of footsteps crept closer and closer.
Eventually, the footsteps stopped just outside the guest room. The doorknob jiggled. Then the man chuckled wildly. “So you’re here, huh?”
He twisted the handle even harder. Evelyn covered her mouth with one hand, gripping the knife with the other. She was trying not to scream.
Her eyes darted around the room, looking for a place to hide, but there was nowhere for her. She locked the door, which made it obvious someone was inside. Once the man got in, he’d search every inch.
The man growled, “I can be nice if you’re smart about it. But if you act up, I can’t promise what happens next.”
His tone was full of eagerness. Then came a loud bang as he kicked the door.
