Chapter 22
Evelyn had imagined a lot of possibilities–maybe the first one through the door would be the police, or maybe Helena. She never thought it would be Nathan.
The room was still dark, but under the hallway’s bright light, she could see his tall frame, like some hero who’d just walked out of a Marvel movie.
A second later, the cops stormed in and pinned the drunk man to the ground. Evelyn felt like she’d just survived a hurricane. Her body gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor.
got hurt?”
When he looked toward the drunk man in cuff’s, his eyes turned freezingly cold, as if his gaze could slice the man into pieces.
Nathan’s eyes landed on her blood–streaked figure, and he rushed to her side, asking, “You
Evelyn shook her head. It took her a good while to come back to reality and replied, “It’s his blood.”
Her hand, still wrapped with the tie and gripping the knife, never stopped shaking. She thought in terror, ‘If the cops had been even one minute later, I might’ve really killed him.’
One of the officers flicked on the lights. The room lit up, revealing the chaos everywhere. Blood smeared across the floor like something out of a nightmare.
Nathan helped Evelyn onto the sofa and turned to the cops filming the scene. “Sir, can she clean up first before doing her statement?”
The officer nodded and led the bleeding man out.
Evelyn curled up on the sofa, her body still tense. She knew this wasn’t just a random break–in. Ever since she moved here, trouble had kept finding her.
She guessed that Clarissa had something to do with all the dirty things. Whether Adrian was involved didn’t even matter anymore.
Evelyn sighed inwardly, ‘Jealousy is terrifying. Some people will burn your whole world just to get what they want. If I hadn’t heard the lock turning, I don’t even want to think about what could’ve happened.‘
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.
Nathan sat beside her and comforted her in a soothing tone, “It’s over. You’re safe now.” He sounded calm, but his eyes were still burning with rage.
He gently pulled her hand forward, the one still gripping the knife. A small smile tugged at his lips. “Smart move. But if he hadn’t been drunk tonight, even wrapping that knife around your arm wouldn’t have saved you.”
Nathan wasn’t trying to scare her for no reason. This world looked safe on the surface, but pressure turned people into monsters.

was truly safe,
Evelyn, strong as she was, forced herself to breathe deep and calm down. She looked at Nathan with genuine confusion. “Mr. Ford, why did you come?”
Nathan loosened the tie she’d used, undoing the knot carefully. His head was slightly lowered, and the overhead light cast a soft glow over his hair.
His lashes fluttered as he frowned, making her stare. She couldn’t help but sigh in her mind, ‘Geeze, he is unfairly good–looking.
The moment that thought crossed her mind, she wanted to slap herself. She scoffed herself inwardly, ‘Seriously, Evelyn? You’re admiring a man’s looks just after escaping from death?‘
Nathan placed the knife on the coffee table and said, “You texted me for help.”
He double–checked to make sure she wasn’t hurt. Then he pulled out his phone, sat down next to her, and held it up. “Let me take a picture for you. Survival moment.”
Evelyn was stunned, thinking, ‘Wait, is this really the same man everyone in the business world called ruthless and cold?‘
