Evelyn checked the time, then went to get ready. Helena had just woken up too. They both washed up and headed downstairs.
Walter stood by the floor–to–ceiling window. Sunlight spilled across his tall frame like it was drawn to him.
Hearing footsteps, he turned around with a soft smile. “Morning, girls. Have some breakfast.”
The three of them sat around the table. Evelyn quietly ate her breakfast. Helena scrolled on her phone as she munched, but when her eyes landed on the trending searches, she suddenly slammed her fork on the table.
She snapped, “This is outrageous. These vultures are saying you went into a hotel with some random guy. And look at this photo. It’s edited so well. Wait, why does this guy look so much like Nathan?”
Helena squinted, then slowly stood up, propping one foot on the chair like she was about to interrogate a suspect.
She met Evelyn’s eyes and asked, “Girl, are you hiding something from me?”
Even Walter looked over, his eyes calm but full of curiosity. No one noticed how tightly he was gripping his coffee cup.
Evelyn explained, “It was the night someone broke into my apartment. I meant to message you, but I sent it to Nathan by mistake. My house was a mess. He took me to a hotel, that’s all. Someone must’ve snapped it right then.”
Walter frowned, thinking, ‘Someone broke into her place? And Nathan actually dropped everything to go help her? Nathan followed her all the way home. So he really does have feelings for Evelyn?‘
The idea caught in his throat. He didn’t show it, but it sat heavy inside him.
“I see. Seriously, who could play such dirty tricks?” Helena drawled.
Suddenly, a certain face flashed in her mind. She turned to Evelyn, like trying to get her confirmation. “Don’t tell me it was Clarissa.”
