Chapter 37
Evelyn wanted to vomit. He still thought he had power over her. Still believed he could emotionally manipulate her into submission. He looked down on her but wanted to keep her by his side with a kid.
He had Clarissa now. And yet, he still refused to let Evelyn go.
Right now, Adrian was the most disgusting thing Evelyn had ever seen.

Evelyn stormed over and shoved Adrian hard toward the door. She growled, “I don’t need your pity. Even if I end up begging on the street, I’d never bother you.”
Adrian stumbled backward under the force. She was furious, and her strength showed it.
She pushed him all the way to the doorway, then slammed the door shut with everything she had.
Adrian barely managed to yank his hand back before it got caught. The loud bang echoed in the corridor, making his chest clench.
At that moment, he felt that Evelyn wasn’t bluffing. She was really leaving his world.
He stared at the closed door for a long time, hesitated, then finally sighed and turned to leave.
Just as he stepped outside the building, he overheard a couple of neighbors gossiping about Evelyn.
He shot them dangerous gazes and shouted, “If I hear another word about my wife, Rivers Group’s legal team will be happy to have a chat with you guys.”
He shoved a business card into one of their hands. His icy glare made everyone fall silent on the spot. Once he saw them shut up, Adrian gave a small nod of satisfaction and walked away.
Later, when Evelyn came downstairs to return to work, she noticed the neighbors looking at her differently. She didn’t bother figuring out why. She pulled out her phone and ordered a ride.
On the way to Horizon Group, she opened her Uber and started checking out cars. She couldn’t keep relying on cabs forever. She was thinking about buying her own car.
She was focused on the screen and didn’t notice the driver had gone off route.
By the time she looked up, the scenery outside was clearly not city traffic. They were heading toward the
outskirts.
She stared out the window, a mocking smile playing at her lips. Her heart was oddly calm, even a little amused.
She asked, “Hey, sir. You sure you’re not lost?”
The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror. His eyes were cold, filled with malice. He replied, “Sit tight. I’m not looking to kill anybody, but if you don’t play along, I’m not gonna be so nice.”

Evelyn faked a frightened look while her fingers moved lightning fast, sending a message to Helena.
Evelyn: [I’m being kidnapped. The car’s going toward your parents’s house.f
Seconds later, Helena replied: [I’m kind of excited right now.]
Evelyn felt the same. Riverhold was a top–tier city with endless roads and exits. Of all the places he could’ve taken her, this driver picked the exact route that gave her the biggest advantage.
Evelyn said in a shaky voice, “Sir, please don’t hurt me. I’ll give you any amount you name.”
Her words made the driver ease up a little. His face, which had been tense and alert, relaxed just a bit.
While they talked, another car passed by from the opposite direction. Nathan had just finished inspecting a new villa development and went back toward the city.
Clayton said, “Mr. Ford, I think that was Ms. Stevenson in that cab.”
Nathan had already seen it. More importantly, he’d seen the twisted grin on the driver’s face.
He ordered, “Turn around.”
Clayton slammed the brakes, pulled a clean U–turn, and started following the cab at a steady pace.
The driver finally pulled into a remote wooded area. Trees stood packed close together. Evelyn’s calm started to fade as she saw the scene.
The driver turned around and glared at her, warning, “Don’t even think about running. If you do, I’ll break your damn legs.”
He got out and slammed the door, locking it tight. Then he pulled out his phone and made a call.
After the call was connected, he said, “She’s right here, Mr. Rivers. What do you want me to do? I’ll take care of it. Promise you’ll be satisfied.”
Evelyn frowned and thought, ‘Mr. Rivers? Is he talking to Adrian?‘
