Chapter 114

KESTER

Aslow, simmering heat crawled under my skin, spreading ke mol it was something darker, something razorsharp and corrosive

What the fuck are you doing here?”

iron through my veins. It wasn’t just anger

The words came out low and controlled, but there was no mistaking the venom dripping from each syllable

Yet, there she stood, smiling like an alrheaded debutante who hadn’t yet figured out she was walking straight into a lion’s den because she still wore that stupid smile on her face

I am having trouble picking out the perfect color combinations for the engagement party, baby, she replied, letting out a breath of exhaustion. Her shoulders sagged for dramatic effect as though she carried the weight of the gods on her back

Baby

My jaw twitched

She now calls me that?

If only she could see anything past the bridge of her nose, she’d realize she had no fucking business being this excited about any of this

Aren’t you going to let me in?”

Before I could answer, she breezed past me, her perfume invading my space like an unwelcome guest overstaying their welcome. You won’t believe how hot it is out there! Jeez! She breathed in some fresh air

Then she stopped short

Her body stiffened, and I watchedhalfamused, halfirritatedas her eyes locked onto Norlan

Oh,she murmured, hesitating for a fraction of a second before she smoothed out her expression. Didn’t know you had company. Her gaze flicked back to me before landing on Norlan again. Hello, Norlan.”

June perched herself on the armrest of the couch, crossing one leg over the other like this was some cozy little planning session and not a violation of my patience

she started, flipping her hair over one shoulder. How many guests are we expecting?”

I didn’t answer

Norlan did when he sensed I wouldn’t say a word to her. And I wasn’t surprised

Around two hundred, I suppose,he said casually, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. Unless Kester’s got a secret list of enemies he plans to invite just for the drama.”

I shot him a glare. He grinned

-June, oblivious as ever, clapped her hands together. “Perfect! That means we’ll need to finalize the seating

arrangements soon.”

leaned back against the couch, silently watching

Watching how she acted like this was normal. Like this wasn’t a goddamn circus she was organizing with me as the unwilling clown

Chapter 114

Watching how Norlan’s eyes kept drifting to her, the way they had bark in college

He wasn’t even subtle about it

Not that I cared

If anything, I almost wanted to throw her in his direction. Bell, I’d even pay for their first date

What about colors? I was thinking something elegant maybe a mix of silver and navy? Or do you think something warmer, like champagne and blush?”

Again, silence from me

And again, Norlan stepped in

I’d say navy and silver suit you,he mused, tilting his head as he studied her. Classy, a little bold, but not too over the top. Fits the image you like to project.”

She beamed as if that was the best compliment she’d received all year

And my dress? She turned to me, expectant. Should I go with something traditional, or should I-”

Notlan,I cut in, since you’re so invested, why don’t you help her pick out the goddamn dress too?”

Norlan chuckled, unbothered. You’re really making me work for this free whiskey, huh?”

June let out a light laugh

The way she prattled on, the way she didn’t noticeor didn’t carethat my silence was anything but passive made my blood itch under my skin

And Norlan, the bastard, was clearly enjoying himself

Where is Kasmine?” She asked, and my muscles went taut

I leveled my gaze at her. Sleeping. Don’t bother her.”

Oh. Right. She must be exhausted. She replied before going back to her Tab and typing away

She had no fucking idea

So, Norlan. Have you finally gotten yourself a woman? She asked, her attention still on the Tab

I saw the way Norlan froze, unsure of how to answer the question. His fingers tightened subtly around his glass, the easy amusement he’d worn a second ago slipping, if only for a fraction of a second

I almost smirked

Almost

He exhaled, That depends. Are we counting fleeting encounters or just the ones that last longer than breakfast?”

She let out a breathy chuckle. Oh, Norlan. You’re still the same, aren’t you?”

Something flickered across his face before he took a slow sip of whiskey, masking whatever reaction had almost surfaced

Norlan set his glass down slowly, fingers lingering on the rim before pulling away

You wound me, June,he said in a teasing voice. I’m entirely capable of holding on to a woman for longer than a single night.”

Chapter 11

Her lips curled, playful. Oh? Since when?”

The comer of Norlan’s mouth twitched, but the humor didit quite reach his eyes. Since the last time you asked me that same question.”

She let out an effortless smile, oblivious to whatever she was stirring within my friend I don’t give a fuck about it, though

Notlan’s fingers tapped against his knee in a slow and thoughtful manner. And then, for the briefest second, his gaze dropped to the curve of her jaw. But he caught himself quickly, masking it behind another sip of whiskey

I said nothing. Just leaned back, taking in the silent struggle playing out across his face

June, still focused on her tab, kept talking. Something about floral arrangements now

And Norlanhe responded when necessary and played along, but there was something off about the way he did it. A fraction too careful

Because June wasn’t his to want

She never had been

And yet, his eyes kept betraying him

Like nowwhen she tilted her head, her hair slipping over one shoulder, and his gaze flickered down before he could stop it

My best friend was losing his grip

I can’t decide between peonies or garden roses,June mused, tapping a finger against her chin. Peonies feel more elegant, but garden roses have that classic charm.”

Norlan swallowed hard, then forced himself to smirk. Oh, is this where I’m supposed to pretend I have a strong opinion on flowers?”

She laughed, nudging him lightly with her elbow. It wouldn’t kill you.”

His lips parted like he wanted to say somethingsomething real, something he’d never let slipbut he hesitated. And that hesitation cost him

June had already moved on, already typing something else into her Tab

I watched Norlan’s jaw tighten, his grip on his glass, just a little too firm

The poor bastard

He was holding on to something he wasn’t even allowed to reach for

And she completely, stupidly, recklessly didn’t even see it

Maybe if she had, she would have left me the fuck alone

Synopsis : My Stepbrother

Kasmine’s world shattered the night she witnessed her stepbrother, Kester Hamilton—the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack—murder an innocent man in cold blood. What began as a normal evening in the woods turned into a nightmare that would haunt her forever. The man Kester killed was no threat; he had only been talking to Kasmine. Yet Kester justified the murder by claiming the man tried to force himself on her.

Trembling and terrified, Kasmine confronted him, refusing to believe his twisted explanation. But Kester’s demeanor remained disturbingly calm. He didn’t show an ounce of remorse. Instead, he scolded her for being dramatic and tried to drag her back to the party, as if nothing had happened. When she resisted, he unleashed his Alpha command—a power no wolf could defy. Under his control, Kasmine’s will crumbled, and she obeyed him like a puppet.

As she returned to the party—ironically, Kester’s girlfriend’s birthday celebration—Kasmine’s heart broke. The brother who once protected her now scared her more than anyone else.

Her mind drifted back to her childhood, to the days when Kester had been her hero. After her father’s death, her mother remarried Alpha Kade Hamilton, Kester’s father. At the time, Kester was fourteen and Kasmine was only seven. He took her under his wing, treating her like a precious little sister. He brought her gifts, defended her from bullies, and made her feel safe. To everyone around them, Kester was the perfect big brother.

But as Kasmine grew older, that “protectiveness” became something else—something dark and possessive. By the time she turned sixteen, Kester had started isolating her from others. He didn’t allow her to have male friends, and even her time with female friends was limited. He wanted her attention, her trust, and her presence—all to himself. It became suffocating.

Now, at twenty years old, Kasmine had no boyfriend and barely any social life. Every time she tried to rebel, Kester reminded her that she should wait for her fated mate when she turned twenty-one and got her wolf. Her parents saw his control as love and protection, never suspecting how toxic and obsessive it had become.

After witnessing the murder, Kasmine was emotionally destroyed. She couldn’t eat, sleep, or think straight. The image of the lifeless man haunted her. Luckily, she only had to see Kester on weekends, since he was busy running both his pack and his billion-dollar company—Zamford Technologies. But even from a distance, his control continued. He had bugged her phone and laptop, monitoring every message and call. There was no escaping his watchful eyes.

Trying to focus on her studies, Kasmine pushed herself to attend her final year of college. She was preparing for her internship, and for once, she felt hopeful. She had submitted three company choices, deliberately avoiding Zamford Technologies to stay away from Kester. Her best friend, Jake—a guy she secretly liked—had applied to the same companies. She dreamed of being placed in the same one as him. Maybe then, away from Kester’s shadow, she could experience normal life, maybe even love.

That morning, she rushed to campus, still hopeful about the internship results. At the school entrance, she met her best friend, Claire, who looked visibly upset. Claire confessed she had been posted to J&F Technologies. Her disappointment wasn’t about the company—it was about Kester. Claire had nursed a crush on him for years and had listed Zamford Technologies in hopes of working near him. But her wish had failed, and she’d lost her chance.

Trying to comfort her, Kasmine asked about her own posting. Strangely, Claire didn’t answer, avoiding her eyes. Confused but impatient, Kasmine dragged her to the information board. Her heart raced as she scanned the list, looking first for Jake’s name. He was placed at Plush Technologies—one of the options they’d chosen together.

Excited, she searched for her name next, praying to see it under the same company. But her excitement quickly turned to dread. Her hands trembled. Her breath caught in her throat. There, beside her name, was written: Zamford Technologies.

The world seemed to tilt around her.

It couldn’t be real. There had to be some mistake. How could she, of all people, end up at her stepbrother’s company—the very place she’d tried hardest to avoid? Panic rose in her chest as the realization sank in. Kester must have done this. Somehow, he had found a way to manipulate her placement, ensuring that even in her professional life, she couldn’t escape his grasp.

Her mind flashed back to his piercing green eyes, his dominating voice, the way he’d ordered her around after committing murder without remorse. Now, he would have full control over her again—for hours every day. There would be no hiding, no breathing space.

As she stood frozen before the board, Kasmine felt her fragile hope for freedom crumble. She had spent years yearning for the day she could make her own choices—turn twenty-one, find her fated mate, and escape Kester’s suffocating hold. But now, destiny—or rather, Kester’s manipulation—had pulled her right back into his world.

And deep down, she feared that this time, she might not make it out alive.
