Yann said, “Go ahead and ask.”
Audrey stared into his eyes. “You don’t have that ‘kiss and forget‘ problem, do you?“,
The night was deep, and it was hard to notice the man’s ears turning red. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “No.”
Usually fearless in business battles and negotiations, he suddenly felt guilty being asked this question.
He was trying to boost his own confidence, fearing that if he really angered Audrey, they wouldn’t even be friends. But he didn’t want to distance himself too much either, or else she wouldn’t see him and might blindly choose another man.
Audrey almost laughed in frustration. She pressed her lips tightly, forcing herself to remain calm and rational. “Right now, I can’t give you a clear
answer.”
She didn’t want to rush into another relationship during this single period. That would be irresponsible to herself and unfair to Yann. She needed to be sure what her feelings for Yann really were.
Yann felt slightly disappointed but overall satisfied. After all, she hadn’t flatly rejected him, which meant there was still hope.
“I won’t pressure you; just follow your heart. I’ll explain everything clearly to Amelia.” Yann tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “Amelia’s mind works in strange ways, and she can be a bit crazy sometimes. You don’t have to accommodate her.”
Audrey actually thought Amelia had a pretty decent personality. After all, for her to suspect her son and Calvin were a couple, and not break them up but support them–that already made her more open–minded than 80% of moms out there.
Yann’s attitude pleased her. Unlike other men who’d say things like, ‘My mom’s had it tough, so you need to be more understanding,‘ or ‘That’s my mom;
can’t you be nicer to her?‘
He told her she didn’t need to put up with Amelia. That earned him a point.
Yann held her hand, and they continued walking along the waterside pavilion. They circled back, and on the way to the villa, passed by that same house
scheduled for renovations.
Lucas and a colleague stood in front of the villa, discussing what time to deliver materials tomorrow, glancing at their phones occasionally.
The colleague looked suspicious: “Still can’t get through on the phone? You’ve been trying all day!” He pulled a cigarette from his pack and offered it to
Lucas.
Lucas took the cigarette, skillfully flicked out his lighter, lit his colleague’s first, then lit his own, He took a deep drag and exhaled a big cloud of smoke, as if trying to blow away the frustration inside him.
Valerie’s phone was still off. Cheryl’s phone was on, but the moment she heard it was him, she declared it harassment and threatened to call the police.
The colleague took a few puffs, sympathizing, “I heard you pay your ex–wife 150 thousand dollars combined for child support and medical bills? You shouldn’t have. She was clearly at fault.”
Lucas stomped on the gravel fiercely, venting his anger on the stones. His eyes were full of hatred, grinding his teeth. “That’s because she h powerful lawyer.”
Suddenly remembering something, Lucas pulled out his phone and dialed again. Valerie could avoid him by turning off her phone, but that lawyer’s phone definitely wouldn’t be off.
Thinking this, he quickly found that number in his contacts and dialed it.
The call was answered promptly, and a polite male voice said, “Hello, Blackthorn Legal.”

“Mr. Patel, I have a case to consult with you. May I ask where your law firm is located?” asked Lucas.
The law firm was ordered to suspend business for renovations, so Clayton made an excuse to meet at a café.
“Alright, see you tomorrow, Mr. Patel,” Lucas said “Mr. Patel” through clenched teeth, his eyes turning fierce.
Audrey stopped in the shadows. She thought, ‘Is that the Mr. Patel I know?‘
Yann squeezed her hand.
A warm breeze blew, carrying a hint of jealousy. Audrey whispered, “Do you think Valerie’s avoiding him just because of domestic violence?”
The next day, Audrey had just arrived at the company when Paul called her into his office.
Edana stood nearby, her gaze full of provocation.
“Paul told me everything about yesterday. You fought with Luther’s niece?” Paul said as he motioned for Audrey to sit.
Audrey stood still and asked back, “Did he tell you the whole story, or just parts that suit him?”
Edana was about to speak, but Paul gave her a glare that shut her up, forcing her to reluctantly stay quiet.
“Then tell me, what exactly happened?” asked Paul.
Audrey started with Flora deliberately dirtying her sleeve, and Edana calling her to the bathroom to ‘talk.‘ Since Edana liked twisting facts, Audrey was going to give her a big reversal.
“I hit Flora because she said Edana told her to come teach me a lesson. I don’t believe Edana is that kind of person, so I confronted her.
“When Flora pushed me away, she hit the wall herself. She was sure that once we returned to the private room, Edana would use this incident to make trouble and push me out of the project.”
Audrey paused a moment and then looked at Edana with an expression that said, ‘I don’t want to believe it, but she really did.‘
Paul’s fingers had been rhythmically tapping on the table, but stopped completely after hearing that.
His expression was still the usual cynical smirk, his lips curving in his signature crooked grin. Yet in that moment, a trace of anger seeped out of him.
Before Paul could lose his temper, Audrey continued, “I think family scandals shouldn’t be aired publicly, so I left without exposing her.”
“You’re lying!” Edana snapped, furious. Although she and Flora had teamed up to teach Audrey a lesson, she didn’t believe Flora was dumb enough to reveal their true intentions.
Audrey said calmly and confidently, “Mr. Gibson should know how difficult the project procedures are. Why would I willingly back out?”
“That’s just you trying to make things difficult for me. The papers you signed…”
“Shut up!” Paul snapped sharply, giving Edana a cold glance.
Edana’s eyes turned red with frustration, but she knew Paul was truly angry and didn’t dare say another word. She just glared at Audrey with a mix of anger and unwillingness.
Paul’s fingers started tapping on the table again, then after a while, he said, “Edana, this is your mishandling. Apologize to Audrey.”
Edana’s hand dropped, her fists clenched tightly.
Paul was a businessman, just like Luther. No matter what personal grudges there were, they couldn’t affect the project’s progress. Those little bosses
