After the meal, she drove to work. Carson called, and Audrey answered via the car’s Bluetooth. “I’m driving, so keep it short.”
“I’m off today and want to take Luna to the amusement park. Are you free?” Carson’s voice was full of hope, even a faint smile.

“But you…” Carson hesitated. “You gave her food, took her to the police station, and even defended her yesterday… I thought, I thought…” He thought for a long time but came up empty.
Audrey snorted, “If any kid was picking through trash in the mall, I’d help. As for taking her to the police, it’s because I don’t want her to be Valerie’s toot to compete for favor.”

Carson stared at the ended call, then looked at Luna standing in front of him and reached out to touch her head. “Audrey has to work. She’ll come see you when she’s not busy.”
Luna’s expression stayed blank, and her bright eyes dimmed a little.
“Come on, Uncle’s taking you to the playground!” Carson grabbed Luna’s hand.
Just as they were about to leave, Carson got a call from Lillian. “Carson, come to the hospital quick, Clayton got beaten up!”
Carson hung up and knelt in front of Luna, apologizing. “We can’t go to the playground today. Your John… your dad got hurt. I need to check on him at the hospital.”
Luna blinked a few times. After Carson left, she stood by the floor–to–ceiling window the whole time.
At the hospital, Lillian was both angry and worried. “Why didn’t you call the police? Do you know who did it? Was it that bitch Audrey?”
Clayton had no injuries on his face, but his stomach was hurt and a rib was broken. He closed his eyes and ignored Lillian’s nagging.
Yesterday, he went to a café to meet a client, but before he could see them, someone threw a sack over his head and beat him up. The attacker cursed him as trash lawyer scum and probably followed him all the way from the hospital.
Carson pushed the door open and came in. Lillian hurried. “He won’t say who did it. Please ask him carefully.”
Clayton saw Carson and closed his eyes again.
Carson went to the foot of the bed, picked up the medical report, and couldn’t help but laugh, “Isn’t this karma?”
“What do you mean?” Lillian looked confused.
Carson explained what happened yesterday when Luna was admitted and how Claytop stirred up anger. Lillian instantly felt a stabbing pain in her chest. from anger.
“You passed over so many great families just to pick some divorced tramp with a kid? She must be insane–abusing her own daughter? What if she snaps. and takes it out on you in your sleep?! People like that are dangerous!”

“Mom…” Clayton weakly said, “Vally’s not that crazy.”
“Not crazy? How dare you say that?” Lillian sheered. “Back in the day, she was dating in middle school and hitting bars in high whool! Who knows wha she pissed off to run off to her uncle.”
Carson didn’t know Valerie had such a wild past and looked at Clayton.
Clayton frowned unhappily. This crazy was not the same crazy.
“No, I can’t trust it. Let them live in that house for now. You come back and say you need care because of your health.” Lillian decided firmly aruf went home to clean Clayton’s room.
Clayton gave Carson a cold look. His gaze wasn’t full of pressure but a helpless kind of anger. “Luna’s already pitiful.”
“Isn’t that because of you guys?” Carson shot back without mercy. He hung up the report and put his hands in his pockets. “You gave up on Audrey yourself. Don’t get tangled up anymore.”
Clayton tried to sit up but pain from the injury made him gasp. “She won’t like you!”
“How will you know if you don’t try?”
Clayton fell back on the pillow, breathing hard, with a sarcastic smile. “She married me because her dad was one of the migrant workers suing for wages!”
Carson’s eyes narrowed. So, Audrey’s marriage was like a disguised repayment? That’s why she would sacrifice for Clayton without hesitation? So, he fundamentally couldn’t compete with Clayton?
Carson swallowed and sneered, “But you let her down, didn’t you? The person she once thought was her benefactor turned out to betray and hurt her
Clayton’s face went pale immediately. Breaking a rib didn’t hurt this much. Breathing hurt after Carson exposed the truth! He grabbed the bedsheet and struggled to sit up to argue.
Suddenly, Carson smiled brightly, “Even if she doesn’t care about Luna, at least I left an impression of kindness and enthusiasm. I have other ways to
connect with her.”
He walked out without looking back. “At least I still have a chance to fight. You don’t even have that chance!”
The ward door closed. Clayton slammed the bedboard hard. The pain from the cracked bone hit him badly, and it took a long time before he could catch his breath, sweat dripping down his forehead.
Someone knocked on the door and a young woman pushed it open. “Are you Clayton, Mr. Patel?”
Clayton nodded. “Yes, I am. And you are…”
The woman came to the bedside and handed over a business card.
Clayton struggled to take it, not even seeing which company it was before the woman said, “Are you Audrey’s ex–husband?”
He was stunned, nearly dropping the card. “What do you want?” Clayton became cautious.
The woman smiled boldly, “We want you to be our company’s legal advisor.”
At Stride Commerce, Paul passed Audrey’s desk for the third time, looking at her strangely.
She frowned but didn’t take it to heart. Cecilia had made it clear–Audrey would lead the project. So she carefully reviewed all the documents before going to get Paul’s signature.
