Alexa’s anger pivoted to him. “You’re the one who brought that bitch back! Why did you ruin my family? Audrey came from a humble background, but she was good to us–she helped with chores every weekend without a single complaint. 

“That bitch only knows how to spend your money and twist the truth. If she hadn’t called the police, John wouldn’t be arrested, Wyatt wouldn’t have been transferred, and I wouldn’t have miscarried.

Lillian’s scream interrupted Alexa’s tirade. The living room crowd suddenly noticed Riley standing on the windowsill, ready to jump.

“Riley, calm down. Listen to me–come down first,” Clayton said.

Suddenly, a sharp slap rang out. Alexa turned her head, taking a moment to realize she’d been hit. Holding her numb cheek, she said to Wyatt, “How dare you hit me?”

She ran out, clutching her face. The neighbors peering in quickly stepped aside as she flung open the door. Pushing through the crowd, she dashed outside and saw a familiar figure in the corner. “Bitch, go to hell!” she shrieked. 

Riley’s fake suicide had been Valerie’s idea. She’d hidden in the shadows, waiting for the Patel family to cave so she could negotiate. 

Clayton was no longer reliable–even if he had a legal duty to support her, his money wasn’t enough for her lavish lifestyle. 

As a Patel family member, Riley couldn’t be ignored; if Valerie took on Riley’s care, the Patels would have to pay her. 

Just as Valerie daydreamed about her bright future, Alexa charged over and kicked her hard in the stomach. Valerie let out a cry of pain. 

Alexa straddled Valerie, yanking her hair with one hand and slapping her face with the other. 

Though Valerie’s paralyzed body had regained some mobility, she lacked strength, so she’d abandoned work plans, intending to use Riley to drain the Patels of money. 

Now pinned by Alexa, she couldn’t fight back but only scream as the crowd, noticing the new fight, decided the night had turned quite entertaining.
