Chapter 41 A Threat
No, she couldn’t let Jessica expose her secret.
The next morning, after breakfast, Jessica and Arthur played on the lawn, basking in the morning sun.
A car pulled into the Hensleys’ driveway, its tires crunching on the gravel.
Jessica glanced up at the sound, just in time to see Hugh stepping out.
Her heart skipped when she saw him steady Rhea as she climbed out, followed by Jane.
They came this early? Did they know she and Charles had gotten married?
Her gaze shifted to Rhea. The death of Jake was still fresh in her mind. She hadn’t forgotten who could be behind it.
Hugh helped Rhea toward the house, then stepped aside to take a phone call, signaling for the women to go inside.
After the brief conversation, Hugh turned, and his eyes immediately locked on Jessica. His pupils contracted.
Was that… Jessica?
He hadn’t been told about her marriage to Charles, so seeing her here was a shock.
His brows furrowed. He walked quickly toward them.
Jessica felt his presence. She reached out and ruffled Arthur’s hair. “Mommy’s a little thirsty. Can you go inside and get me some water?”
Arthur, unaware of the approaching man, grinned and nodded. “Okay!” He dashed off toward the house.
The moment Arthur was out of sight, Hugh appeared in front of Jessica, his glare cold. “What are you doing here?”
Jessica met his gaze, her lips curling into a calm smile. “Why couldn’t I be here?”
“Who brought you?” Hugh’s voice hardened. His eyes narrowed. “Was it Uncle Charles?”
“Who else?” Jessica replied, her tone teasing.
Hugh’s glare deepened, his face hardening with anger. He hadn’t expected her to manipulate Charles into bringing her here.

Jessica studied him. Did he not know about her and Charles?
Suddenly, Hugh lunged forward, grabbed her arm and yanked her up. “You need to leave. The Hensleys’ estate isn’t a place for everyone!”
Jessica stumbled, her feet unsteady as he dragged her. She tried to break free, but his grip was too tight.
“Hugh, let go of me!” she hissed, her voice sharp but controlled.
“I don’t care how you tricked Uncle Charles. As long as I’m here, you’re not getting away with it!” Hugh

“Hugh, you’d better let go now. If Charles sees this, you’re going to have a hell of a time explaining what you’re doing,” Jessica snapped, her voice sharp.
The words only fueled Hugh’s anger. He sneered, his voice dripping with mockery. “Jessica, do you really think you matter? You think Uncle Charles will care about you? You think you’re worthy of his attention?”
He cursed under his breath and tried to drag her again. But then, a tall figure appeared right in front of them.

Hugh had no choice but to stop. His eyes widened as he recognized the figure. “Uncle Charles?”
Charles’ gaze was cold, his eyes locked on Hugh’s hand on Jessica. His voice was icy. “Hugh, where do you think you’re taking your aunt to?”
Hugh froze, confusion flashing in his eyes. Aunt? What aunt? His wife?
But when’d he get married? I didn’t hear about that.
“Let her go,” Charles ordered, his tone unwavering.
Hugh blinked, slowly coming back to his senses. The ‘aunt’ Charles was referring to was … Jessica.
His mind raced. He turned to her, his voice trembling. “You … you and Uncle Charles … ”

“Yep,” Jessica replied with a smile that was almost smug. “We’re married now. I’m your aunt.”
Hugh’s hand fell away from her, his mind reeling.
This was madness. Complete madness.
Jessica walked past him, deliberately linking her arm with Charles!
The sight stung Hugh, and he struggled to keep his anger in check. But it spilled over. His voice was low and venomous. “Uncle Charles, do you even know what kind of woman she is? You really married her? She betrayed me and had a kid with some random guy. Did you know that?”
Jessica’s gaze turned cold as she studied him. It hit her how little she remembered of his kindness from the past. What had he been to her?
Now, the sight of him just made her sick.
Charles’ expression didn’t change, but the frown on his face deepened slightly. His voice was sharp. “Hugh, since she’s your aunt now, you better start treating her with respect.”
The sound of running footsteps cut through the tension. A small voice called out. “Mommy, Daddy, I found you!”
Arthur dashed over, handing Jessica a bottle of juice. “Mommy, I found some good juice!”
Jessica smiled, taking the bottle. “Thanks, sweetie.”
Hugh’s gaze snapped to Arthur. “Dad? Uncle Charles? He … ” His words trailed off, as the realization hit him. Did Uncle Charles accept this kid as his son?
