Sit here, young lady.”
Reduced to a five year old child by the tone of her voice, I obeyed immediately, taking my seat and looking much like the twins ….hands in lap, eyes glued to the floor, the wall or the fireplace. Anywhere, but on my mother.
“How long has this been going on?” She asked, the hint of sorrow and concern wrapped into her angry tone.
Thankfully, Aiden spoke up first. I wasn’t sure I could speak past the lump of fear that was lodged in my throat. In truth, I was nineteen. My mom couldn’t really do much to me like when I was a kid. But she was still mom, and knowing that she was mad or disappointed in me was still like taking a punch to the chest.
“A few months.” Aiden admitted. “We didn’t know how to tell you and dad, so we’ve been keeping it secret.”
“A few months,” my mom mumbled, more to herself than to us. I swore I could hear the
gears grinding in her head as she struggled to accept what she was being told. She looked over at me. “They’re your brothers, Ella. How could you?”
“We’re her stepbrothers,” Alan corrected. “We’re not related by blood. If you hadn’t married our dad, this wouldn’t be weird.”
My mom’s eyes shot to him. Fixing him in her stare for several seconds, she was able to make a full–grown soldier cringe. I would have laughed at the irony of it, but I was too scared myself
to make a sound.

“Not weird?” She asked, her voice far too calm given the way her body vibrated with anger. However, that anger finally came out when she asked, “How is my daughter sleeping with two men at the same time not weird?”
Alan’s jaw dropped and Aiden opened his mouth like he had something to say, but he quickly closed it again when my mom’s question stunned him silent. It felt like I had a weight sitting in my stomach, churning around until it made me want to puke.
Returning her attention to me, mom looked at me like she expected me to answer the question. I had nothing to say, but knew she wouldn’t let me get away with remaining silent about all of
this.
“Okay. Fine. I understand how you find this entire thing to be wrong, but this isn’t about what you think, mom, it’s about how we feel. We’re happy with our relationship …
“Your relationship?” She interrupted. “This is a relationship?”
“Of course, it is,” Aiden answered quickly, the hint of anger in his voice. “Neither of us would treat Ella like a fun time. We both care for her very deeply.”
“I’m sure you do, Aiden,” she snapped, “but you’re supposed to care for her like a sister and NOT as a girlfriend.”
I was getting angry by that point. I understood that my mother was upset, but who was she to tell us how we should and shouldn’t feel about each other?”
Squaring my shoulders, I said, “Mom, it’s not your decision how we feel about each other.”
“Under my roof, it is!” She screamed back. I flinched at the sound of her voice and the twins seemed to tense when they noticed my reaction.
Taking a slow calming breath, I said, “I’m an adult. I’m at an age now where I should be allowed to choose who I date and how I date them. Currently, I’m happy with the way things are. I love them both and this relationship has been working the way it is
She looked around the room and said, “I want all three of you out…Now. Take your adult relationship and have fun with it somewhere else. Because it’s not happening under my roof!”
“Mom! That’s insane! Where are we going to go?” I couldn’t believe what she was saying. She was kicking us out? Just because we decided to date each other?
With a calm voice, she answered, “I don’t care. Since you’re an adult and can make your own adult decisions, then you figure out where to live. It won’t be here.” Standing up from the couch, she marched across the room to go upstairs. Looking back at us, she said, “You have fifteen minutes to grab some clothes. When I come back out of my room, I want all three of you gone.” Her eyes snapped to the twins. “I’m calling your father about this.”

Marching up the stairs, she disappeared into her room and tears broke free from my eyes.
My mother just kicked me out of the house.
Looking up at the twins, I questioned them silently. They both looked as upset as me, but stood up from the couch to do as my mother had asked.
Reaching out to help me up from the couch, Aiden said, “Come on, Ella. We’ll figure this out. Don’t worry.”
Arriving to the motel, I waited in the car, curled up in the back seat as Aiden ran inside to get us a room. My eyes stung with the tears I shed and Alan sat next to me with his arm around my shoulders and his hand rubbing up and down my arm.
“Don’t worry, Ella,” he said softly. ” She’s just mad. Once she has a few days to process this, she’ll get over it. In all honesty, this might end up being a good thing. It’s like you said: we’re adults. It’s about time we move out.”
Glancing up at him with sad eyes, I said, “How are we going to afford living on our own? I’m starting school soon and I won’t be able to work.”
“Both of us work. Aiden and I can cover the bills while you attend school. Nothing is going to be different except for the fact that we’ll be able to be open about our relationship finally. You have to admit it’s sucked having to hide how we feel about each other while living in the same house.”
“Yeah,” I admitted in a hushed tone. When I sniffled, he pulled me closer to him and leaned down to kiss my cheek. “No worries, baby girl. This will all work out. Yeah, it’s unconventional, but our parents love us – no matter what. They’re not going to disown us if we refuse to break apart our relationship. So cheer up, okay?”
The driver’s side door opened and Aiden climbed into the car. “We have a room. Let’s get up there and hit the sheets. I’m fucking exhausted after driving back home today, having amazing sex and then getting caught and chewed out by Pamela.”
I cringed at the last part, but agreed, I wanted to go to sleep and forget this night ever happened.
He pulled around to the building and we all walked upstairs lugging our bags, and we practically fell into the room when we got the door open. The twins were exhausted from physical training – I was exhausted emotionally.
None of us were in the mood to christen our newfound – and forced – freedom, so we fell asleep on the bed, each twin wrapped on either side of me. I had to admit, being sandwiched in between their warmth was enough to lull me to sleep quickly and I didn’t stir until the following morning when the sun shone brightly through the large window at the front of the room.

Getting up, I took a shower and sat down on the couch watching silently as both Aiden and Alan woke up and fought over who got the bathroom first. A quick coin toss gave the honor to Aiden, who smirked as he walked in.
Alan sat down on the bed, running his hand through his messy brown hair before giving me a crooked smile. “Mornin “.”
“Hey,” I answered.” So, what are the plans for today? Are we just hanging out here?”
Alan sighed, obviously noticing that I was still upset. There was no hiding it. I could plaster on a fake smile all day long, but my soft voice would always give me away.
“Aiden might be working today, but I’m not. So, either all three of us go looking for an apartment, or it’s just you and me for a few hours. We can’t stay in this hotel for long. I need more than one bathroom.”
I laughed, but it still sounded weak. “You need to get better about calling the coin toss.”

Reaching up to rub the back of his neck, he rolled his head over his shoulders and said, “Yeah, and we need to get a bigger bed pronto. I love sleeping next to you, Ella, but it’s tough trying to fit all three of us onto a queen–size mattress. We definitely need a king or something bigger.”
Grabbing his phone from the side table, he flicked the button on the side and grimaced when the screen lit up.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
Hitting the button to turn his phone back off, he said, “Dad has called me about fifteen times already. I’m glad I remembered to turn my ringer off. That’s the last thing I want to deal with first thing in the morning.”
I nodded, realizing quickly that poor mom had been home alone to deal with everything she’ddiscovered. “I’m sure he’ll cut his business trip short to get home. This is kind of a big
deal.”
“Yeah,” he tossed the phone back on the table, “Well, it shouldn’t be. I mean, whatever, I get it. Not only is the relationship odd because three people are involved, but in our parents‘ eyes, we’re siblings. Eventually, they’ll have to get over that part. It’s not our fault they decided to get married.”
Aiden stepped out of the bathroom, steam billowing out from the quick shower he’d just taken. “Your turn.”
“About fucking time,” Alan mumbled under his breath. Stepping into the bathroom, he turned to look at Aiden from over his shoulder. “Check your phone. Dad called me fifteen times already.
