Cleo scrambled to wipe up the juice on the table, stammering, “You.. you don’t mean the one at the Hain Building, do you?”
Under her hopeful gaze, Sebastian nodded.
In an instant, the light faded from Cleo’s eye. She felt completely deflated.
She thought, I’d just paraded Sebastian’s wife and another man to a party right in front of him. If word got out, how am I supposed to face anyone?
Even if they were in the middle of a divorce, it wasn’t finalized yet. Plus, Maxine’s own son was tagging along too.
Noticing her sudden guilty look, Sebastian asked, “What’s wrong?”
Cleo hesitated, not sure how to explain, when Maxine’s phone suddenly rang.
It was a call from Urban. He was probably already in the parking lot nearby.
“I’m downstairs. Come on down,” Urban said over the phone.
Even though Maxine had her phone volume turned way down, the restaurant was so quiet that everyone at the table could hear his voice loud and clear.
Cleo had always thought of herself as a gutsy woman, never flustered, even during interviews. But right now, she suddenly felt a wave of panic.
It was because both Sebastian and Brian were staring straight at her.
Feeling uneasy, Cleo poked at her sweet potato with her fork and mumbled, “Since Avery’s going too, when Urban mentioned it, I just asked Maxine to bring me along.”
“We’ll come too,” Brian said.
Cleo flashed him a smile. “I know, we’ll all go together in a bit. Don’t worry.”
Brian turned his head away and let out a grumpy little huff.
What started as just two people quickly became four. The group made their way to the parking lot. When the car door opened, Urban looked up at Sebastian, standing stone–faced at the door. The calm look on his own face started to crack.
He asked, “What are you doing here?”
Sebastian stared back at him, just as expressionless. “I was here with my kid. Ran into Maxine, so we came over together.”
He glanced at Urban’s stretch Lincoln. “Looks like there’s just enough room for everyone.”
Only then did Urban notice the child standing next to Sebastian. The kid looked about the same age as Mona’s son, but way more refined, like a little prince.
Brian looked up and said flatly, “Hi, mister.”
Urban was momentarily at a loss for words. Being called that made him feel like he’d just dropped a generation compared to everyone else.
Ever since their last run–in at the stables, he and Sebastian had realized they didn’t really get along. But with Maxine there as the buffer, Urban couldn’t exactly lose his temper, so he could only agree to let them in.
Urban had picked them up early to get their hair and makeup done. While the two women were inside changing and getting ready, the two men sat outside, with a very serious little kid sandwiched between them.
Maxine came out after finishing her makeup and saw the three of them sitting there. “Let’s go,” she said.
