Sebastian paused mid–step, his figure looking somewhat desolate against the chilly night breeze.
After a while, he turned around, his cold gaze locking onto Maxine’s face. “Maxine, don’t you realize at all that you could’ve been in serigila trouble tonight, even risking your life?
“Who do you think would sneak into the home of a deceased person at this hour and try to pick the lock?”
Maxine’s eyes were full of stubbornness as she replied, “Are you saying Gabriel sent someone? He wants to check if there are any leftover clues from Ivanna’s case and destroy anything that could be detrimental to him?”
Sebastian gave a cold sneer. “Since you already knew, do you think you can outsmart Gabriel?”
“I don’t want to outsmart him; I want justice!” Although Maxine was keeping her voice down, her emotions gradually escalated. “I watched vanna de right before my eyes. I was the one who arranged for her cremation and burial,
“It was also me who promised her back then that I would win this case for her! I can’t go back on my word; I can’t just act like nothing happened!”
Sebastian bit his teeth lightly, his gaze filled with clear disdain. “You think you can be the savior? Maxine, you overestimate yourself.”
Maxine’s eyes flickered, her hands clenching. “What do you mean?”
“Do you really believe your success as a prominent lawyer is all due to your own efforts? Not really. If it weren’t for being Mrs. Mason with me and the Mason Group backing you, the path you’ve walked would’ve been filled with countless unforeseen hardships,”
Sebastian’s gaze and tone were utterly indifferent. He lowered his eyes slightly, looking down on Maxine, making her feel deeply humiliated.
Maxine gave a self–deprecating smile. “Right, you think I owe everything to your help. You made me. Without you, I’d be nothing. So, Sebastian, why are you dragging your feet about the divorce? If you really think that way about me, my leaving should lighten your burden.”
Sebastian’s temple twitched slightly. ‘How come I never noticed before that Maxine was so stubborn?‘ he thought.
“Maxine, I’m not completely dismissing your efforts. I just want you to understand–this world is like this. Not everything you want to do will happen, especially without certain conditions.
“You’re certainly outstanding, but there are still some things you can’t overcome.”
As his agitated mood gradually subsided, Sebastian fixed his gaze on Maxine. “We’ve been married for many years, and the tangled interests make our divorce far more complicated than you might imagine.
“Maxine, put away those unrealistic thoughts and actions. Take care of Ivanna’s orphan and then come home we need to talk about what’s happened recently.
“There’s nothing we can’t work qut.”
Maxine gazed at Sebastian, suddenly feeling a pang of sorrow.
She smiled bitterly and shook her head. “Sebastian, from the beginning till now, you don’t understand why I want a divorce.
“You don’t think it’s just because you’re getting close to Kathleen and Brian doesn’t respect me as a mother, do you? Li something?”
Sebastian frowned but didn’t say anything.
But Maxine could tell that his expression indeed conveyed this thought.
“It’s not like that, Sebastian. I want a divorce because I feel no love from you.”
