Chapter 29 

Maxine walked past Sebastian without looking back, and thus didn’t see the restrained, almost helpless look in Sebastian’s eyes as he watched her leave 

Once in the car, her phone rang. 

It was Cleo. “Are you okay? I just saw your text. Where are you? I’ll come for you.” 

Maxine sighed, replying, “I’m fine. But Cleo, if you call me up like this under some critical situation, I’d be screwed.” 

Cleo sounded a bit slurred; she had clearly been drinking. “Sorry, sorry, I’m out with my boss right now! If you’ve got nothing to do, can you pick me up?” 

Maxine’s feelings right now were rather complicated; she was almost tempted to laugh in anger at Cleo’s demands. 

She was about to refuse, but then she checked her phone–it was almost midnight. 

“Where are you? Send me the address,” she asked, helpless. 

Cleo instantly sent an address for a bar downtown called Horizon Oasis, quite famous. “Hurry up. If you delay any longer, I’m really going to get drowned in drinks.” 

Maxine rarely went to such places–too noisy and chaotic–but somehow she wanted to have a drink tonight. 

Twenty minutes later, she arrived at the bar. 

The place wasn’t flashy, but as she got closer, she could hear muffled music, with a smell that was hard to describe–a mix of alcohol and the sweet, cloying scent of makeup. 

Instantly, Maxine lost interest in drinking. 

At the door, the security asked for ID info, which surprised her a bit. ‘It doesn’t look like I’m a minor. Why did they need this?‘ 

After showing her passport to the security, who then registered it, Maxine couldn’t help but ask out of curiosity, “Is it standard practice here to register identity information for entry?” 

The guard gave her a quick glance. “First time here?” 

Maxine nodded. 

“Usually we don’t register, but there’s a big client inside today with a sensitive identity. So everyone entering today needs to be registered.” With that, the guard returned her passport and added, “You can go in now.” 

Nodding, Maxine started walking in while calling Cleo. 

But when no one picked up, she had to stop and send a message instead. 

She was lowering her head, and out of the corner of her eye, she noticed someone approaching from ahead. Instinctively, she moved to the side. 

It was a group, three or four men and women laughing and jostling as they passed by. As they walked past, Maxine caught a strong whiff of alcohol and couldn’t help but furrow her brows slightly. 

“Hey! Who’s this beauty? Never seen her here before?” A voice came, and Maxine looked up automatically. 

Those men and women who had just walked past stopped in their tracks, looking at her with half–smiles. 

In the center of the group stood the man who had spoken earlier. 

Initially not paying much attention, Maxine was about to leave when she recognized the man’s face–her blood ran cold instantly, and she felt icy all over.

Chapter 29 

“Hey, you, Mr. Jenson is asking you! What’s your name?” The young girl next to the man smirked as she spoke, her heaply made up eyes eselli arrogance, and there seemed to be a hint of disdain towards Maxine. 

But Maxine didn’t care about any of that, she stared fixedly at the man in the middle. 

The man was quite handsome, but there was an indefinable air of sleaziness and frivolity in his manner and speech that made Maxine extremely uncomfortable. 

But Maxine couldn’t look away–she had seen this face countless times in the case files, but the man opposite her clearly didn’t recognize her 

The reason was simple; when Ivanna’s case first broke out, even Ivanna herself couldn’t see the defendant, let alone her defense lawyer. 

“Huh? Can’t you hear me?” The young girl got annoyed and shouted, “Do you know who this is?” 

The sultry lights inside the bar illuminated Maxine’s cold and indifferent face, stunning those in front of her slightly. 

She replied calmly, “I know. Vice General Manager of the Jenson Construction Group, Gabriel Jenson. I’ve heard so much about you.”
