But as Kathleen looked up and saw Sebastian and Brian dressed up like they were going out, a flash of confusion crossed her 

face. 

Kathleen said gently, “Oh no, did I come at a bad time? Are you two heading out? Where to?” 

Sebastian hesitated. But Brian immediately answered without thinking, “We’re going to see my mom!” 

The smile on Kathleen’s face froze for a second, but she quickly recovered. 

The next moment, Kathleen turned toward Sebastian with a curious smile, “Sebastian, didn’t you two decide to get a divorce? Why the sudden meet–up?” 

Sebastian had always appreciated Kathleen’s abilities and her gentle personality. She’d seemed like a solid friend. 

But ever since Maxine moved out, Kathleen had been showing up more often. Lately, Sebastian was starting to feel she didn’t know where the boundaries were. 

And now, when he heard what she just said, Sebastian’s eyes grew colder. 

“We’re not divorced, Sebastian said quietly, “and we won’t be. Kathleen, don’t make guesses like that in front of a child.” 

The smile almost slipped off Kathleen’s face. She wondered, ‘How could that be… Sebastian has clearly seemed done with Maxine before! But now… 

Brian, completely unaware of the flash of resentment in Kathleen’s eyes, grinned proudly. “Mom doesn’t want to leave me and Dad! 

“I bet she’s meeting Dad to make up! Kathleen, you’re Dad’s friend–aren’t you happy for him?” 

Kathleen’s hand tightened slightly at her side. After a moment, she forced a smile. “Of course I’m happy–So, Sebastian, are you two heading out now? I could start cooking. When you get back, the food will be ready.” 

Brian’s eyes sparkled. ‘Kathleen’s cooking isn’t as good as Mom’s, but it’s still tasty!‘ he thought. 

“Okay-” Brian said cheerfully, 

“Thank you,” Sebastian replied coolly. “But it’s too much trouble. Let’s do it another day.” 

With that, Sebastian took Brian and headed toward the door. 

Kathleen couldn’t hold it in anymore. She masked her bitterness with a smile and said casually, “How about I come with you? 

“I haven’t seen Maxine in a while either. Things got tense before–maybe she’s upset with me. I should apologize. I could also help smooth things over for you two 

Kathleen giggled. “If you two make up, I definitely deserve a thank–you gift, don’t I?” 

Sebastian stopped and seemed to consider it. After a moment, he nodded. “Alright. Let’s go together.

Kathleen followed behind them, a glint of satisfaction flashing in her eyes. 

Back at Maxine’s apartment, she sat in the living room, checking the time with a frown.

Chapter 48 

They were already five minutes late. Sebastian was never the kind to be late. 

And Jessica had already fallen asleep waiting. Maxine sighed and carried her back to her room, then quietly shut the door. 

Just as Maxine stepped out of Jessica’s bedroom, someone knocked on the front door. 

Maxine’s expression darkened. She walked over and pulled the door open. “Sebastian Mason, you’re late-” 

Maxine’s words stopped abruptly the second she saw who was at the door. 

Her eyes landed on Sebastian–and the smiling Kathleen right beside him. A sharp flicker of disbelief flashed across her face. 

Sebastian noticed the shift in Maxine’s expression immediately. 

At that moment, it hit Sebastian–bringing Kathleen here was a mistake. 

But it lasted only a second. Maxine quickly regained her composure. She let out a light laugh and stepped aside. 

Maxine teased, “Come in–So you couldn’t bring your son, and decided to bring your new girlfriend instead? Perfect. We can get everything out in the open today.”
